TRANSFERS United's recruitment record simply hasn't been good enough since Ferguson retired in 2013, with the club spending billions of dollars on players who have failed to live up to their reputations.
Ten Hag cannot be held responsible for what went before him, but there are question marks over the players signed on his watch.
The $95 million spent on Antony has not provided the sort of return fans would have expected, with the Brazil winger struggling to adapt to the English topflight.

SQUAD QUALITY It has been reported that United is willing to listen to offers for the majority of its players in the offseason, with notable exceptions including Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
That speaks volumes about the changes required to transform the squad and the tight financial restraints on the club if it is to operate within the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules.
With defender Raphael Varane and forward Anthony Martial out of contract at the end of the season, there will be two key areas United needs to strengthen in, even before sales.
OWNERSHIP UPHEAVAL Ten Hag has been left in limbo while new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority investment.

The Premier League has already cleared Ratcliffe to take up a minority share under its rules regarding who is allowed to be an owner or director of a soccer club.
The British billionaire has until February 17 to complete his purchase, although confirmation could come later than that.
In a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday, United said the FA had given its approval for the deal to go ahead. League approval was confirmed on Monday.
Ratcliffe is one of Britain's richest people and the owner of petrochemicals giant INEOS. He agreed a deal to buy a stake in United in December after owners the Glazer family had put the club up for sale in 2022.
The Glazers, who also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, eventually opted to sell a minority of the 20-time English champion after also fielding bids from Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The 71-year-old Ratcliffe has paid $1.3 billion for &ldquo;up to 25%&rdquo; of the club and will invest a further $300 million for &ldquo;future investment into Old Trafford,&rdquo; United has said.
He will provide $200 million upon completion of the deal and a further $100 million by the end of 2024. That additional investment will eventually take Ratcliffe's stake up to 29%. The Glazer family will have a 49% stake under the deal.
Racliffe's INEOS Sport division will take over control of United's soccer operation.
Fan has been disillusioned with the team's onfield decline since the retirement of former manager Alex Ferguson in 2013. United has not won the title since Ferguson's final season and has repeatedly missed out on qualification for the Champions League during that period.
Many United fans have campaigned to drive the Glazers family out.
While fans hoped for a complete buyout of the club, there is optimism Ratcliffe, who was a boyhood United supporter, can help return it to its glory days.&nbsp;

As part of the deal, United said Ratcliffe would take responsibility for the club's football operations.
Ratcliffe, who was born in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, had originally bid to buy American owners, the Glazers', majority share of around 69%.
"As a local boy and a lifelong supporter of the club, I am very pleased that we have been able to agree a deal with the Manchester United Board that delegates us management responsibility of the football operations of the club," Ratcliffe said.
"Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times. We will bring the global knowledge, expertise and talent from the wider INEOS Sport group to help drive further improvement at the club, while also providing funds intended to enable future investment into Old Trafford." Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer, United executive co-chairmen and directors, said in the statement: "Sir Jim and INEOS bring a wealth of commercial experience as well as significant financial commitment into the club. Qatar's Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is withdrawing his offer to buy storied football club Manchester United, a person with knowledge of the process told The Associated Press on Saturday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of confidentiality restrictions around the process.
Sheikh Jassim had been one of the leading contenders to complete a takeover of the Premier League club, which was put up for sale last year.
Along with British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, the Qatari banker was one of only two bidders to publicly declare their intention to buy out United owners, the Glazer family.
But almost a year since bids were invited for the 20-time English league champions, Sheikh Jassim has informed the Glazers he is withdrawing his offer, the person said.
The person said Sheikh Jassim's final bid was almost double United's current market valuation of $3.2 billion.

Manchester United winger Antony has been allowed a leave of absence in order to address allegations made against him of violence towards women.
The 23-year-old earlier this week was dropped from the Brazil squad after accusations of physical aggression on several occasions since January towards his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, which are being investigated by police and which he denies.
United have agreed with the player for him to stay away from the club in order to focus on defending himself.
Antony has not been arrested or charged and says he will co-operate with police in order to prove his innocence.
United, fresh from dealing with Mason Greenwood's exit from the club, said in a statement: "Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony.
"Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday. However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.
"As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse."
United, who have not suspended Antony, will continue to monitor the situation as it develops, with Erik ten Hag consulted on the decision.
Antony will remain on full pay and hopes to return to the club as soon as possible.
"I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me," he said in a statement.
"This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my team-mates and unnecessary controversy for the club. I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully cooperate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible."
