The situation in Manipur&rsquo;s Jiribam district remained "tense" but &ldquo;under control&rdquo; on Sunday, after suspected militants torched two police outposts and at least 70 houses in a fresh bout of violence in the state, police said.
Additional security forces have been deployed in the affected areas following the incident on Saturday, they said.
"The situation is tense but under control in the wake of violent disturbances that broke out in Jiribam district in which miscreants torched two police pickets, a forest beat office... and several houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities,&rdquo; the Manipur Police said in a statement.
More than 70 houses were set on fire in Lamtai Khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal and Begra villages, a senior police officer said.
&ldquo;Police is also actively monitoring social media updates, which may incite communal feelings amongst the communities and requests general public to refrain from spreading unfounded/unverified information," it said.
Violence broke out in Jiribam in the ethnic strife-torn state on Thursday evening, after suspected militants killed a 59-year-old man.
The person, identified as Soibam Saratkumar Singh, went missing after he had gone to his farm on June 6 and later, his body was found with wounds made by a sharp object, an official had said.
Meanwhile, an irate mob stopped a truck at Sorok Atingbi Khunou late on Saturday and reportedly torched essential commodities it was carrying, a police officer said.
A contingent of more than 70 state police commandos was airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam to assist security personnel in their operations against militants, he said.
Around 239 Meitei people, mostly women and children, have been evacuated from peripheral areas of Jiribam on Friday, and moved to a newly set up relief camp at a multi-sports complex in the district, officials added.
The state government has also transferred Jiribam SP A Ghanashyam Sharma to the post of additional director of the Manipur Police Training College, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms.
The transfer order was issued hours after police outposts of Jiri Mukh and Choto Bekra, and the Goakhal forest beat office were set afire on Saturday morning, they said.
Reacting to the incidents of fresh violence, newly elected Congress MP from the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, urged the Manipur government to protect the lives and properties of the people of Jiribam.
Jiribam, which has a diverse ethnic composition of Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis and non-Manipuris, had so far remained unaffected by the ethnic strife that has been raging in the northeastern state since May last year.
The ethnic conflict between Imphal valley-based Meiteis and hill-based Kukis has led to the deaths of over 200 people, and rendered thousands of people homeless.

Most of the newly displaced people were staying in villages more than 30 km from Jiribam town, an official said, adding "more security personnel have been rushed to the area." The Manipur police have ordered state police commando personnel based in Imphal Valley to proceed to Jiribam on Saturday for duty with immediate effect.

A bridge on the National Highway 2 in ethnic violence-hit Manipur&rsquo;s Kangpokpi district was partially damaged in an IED explosion early on Wednesday, days before the second phase of Lok Sabha elections are to be held in parts of the state.
The improvised explosive device (IED) blast occurred on the bridge between Sapermeina and Koubru Leikha areas around 12.45 am, a police officer said, adding that no casualties were reported so far.
Three craters and cracks on both ends of the bridge were noticed, the officer said.
Movement of heavy vehicles has been stopped on the bridge connecting Manipur&rsquo;s capital Imphal with Nagaland&rsquo;s Dimapur.
Minutes after the explosion, police personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the bridge, he said, adding that an investigation into the IED blast has been initiated.
Some two-wheelers, however, were seen plying on the bridge this morning.
The IED explosion occurred hours after gunfights broke out between village volunteers of the two warring communities in Imphal West district.

After the Idukki diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church screened the controversial movie 'The Kerala Story', a church under the Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese on Wednesday showed a documentary on the Manipur violence to students attending its vacation catechism classes.
The documentary 'Cry of the Oppressed' on the violence in Manipur was screened for around 125 students at the Sanjopuram St Joseph's Church under the influential Syro Malabar Catholic Church .
Father James Panavelil, the vicar of the church, said that 'The Kerala Story' is a propaganda film and that it should not be screened by the church.
"I was of the view that such a propaganda film should not be in a children's class. If we do, we too will become part of that propaganda. So in order to give the message to stay away from that controversy and not forget the violence in Manipur, the 15-minute long documentary was shown," he told PTI.
Father Panavelil further said that what happened in Manipur was not an exaggeration or a lie or something that did not happen.
"It was something that happened and was condemned by the church leadership itself. So what is wrong in showing the documentary? Also, we were aware that 'The Kerala Story' was not required to be shown," he added.
"As far as I am concerned, the church should not be part of a propaganda film, especially during the elections," he further said, referring to the 'The Kerala Story'.
While speaking to a TV channel, the vicar said that 'The Kerala Story', "like 'The Kashmir Files' was a planned agenda or propaganda of the Sangh Parivar" and the common people know that.
At the same time, he said he was not going to comment on the beliefs or convictions of those who screened the controversial film by Sudipto Sen which hit theatres last year and whose plot revolves around a group of women from Kerala who were forced to convert to Islam and join the terror outfit ISIS.
The vicar said that the Idukki diocese may have had good intentions with regard to the future of the children, but they could have chosen different content or material for the purpose. "A film like 'Kappela' would have been better instead of a propaganda film like this ('The Kerala Story')," he said.
On Monday, the Idukki Diocese offered an explanation that the movie was exhibited to teenagers allegedly as part of an intensive training programme to "create awareness about love relationships and their consequences and dangers." Following the screening by the Idukki diocese, the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) units associated with the Thalassery archdiocese and the Thamarassery diocese of the Syro-Malabar Church announced that they too would screen the controversial movie.
The influential Syro-Malabar Church is the largest Eastern Catholic Church after the Ukrainian Church.
On Tuesday, a division of the Kerala Catholic Bishop Council reaffirmed its decision to conduct awareness programmes aimed at addressing societal issues and protecting young people from potential negative influences.
Without referring to the film, the Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance, under the KCBC, came out with a statement, claiming that terrorism and betrayals in the name of romantic relationships are a "reality of the time", and the Church gives cautionary directives keeping this in mind.
The movie, screened by public broadcaster Doordarshan last week, has drawn sharp reactions cutting across politics in Kerala since its release.
The CPI(M) had alleged that the film is a part of the RSS agenda to humiliate the state. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that a "blatant lie" is being peddled and presented as a film to tarnish the image of the state.
Congress leaders V D Satheesan and A K Antony had said the movie was a trap laid by the Sangh Parivar and cautioned people against falling into it, while the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key partner in opposition UDF, contended that the church should screen the video of the ongoing violence in Manipur instead of 'The Kerala Story'.
Senior BJP leader Prakash Javadekar, on the other hand, said the movie has a censor certificate and anyone can watch it.&nbsp;

The Manipur High Court has modified last year's order that directed the state government to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe status.

The Manipur High Court has deleted a controversial paragraph from its March 27, 2023 order that directed the state government to consider including the Meitei community in Scheduled Tribe status.
The last year's order had sparked ethnic violence in the restive region, with the Kuki tribal opposing the court's direction.
The paragraph of the last year verdict stated the state government "shall consider the case of the petitioners for inclusion of Meetei/Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes list, expeditiously, preferably within a period of four weeks" from the date of receipt of the order.
Justice Gaiphulshillu's ruling on February 21 emphasised the necessity of removing the directive, pointing to the Government of India's stipulated procedure for Scheduled Tribe list amendments.
Justice Gaiphulshillu said, "Accordingly, the direction given at para no. 17(iii) needs to be deleted and is ordered accordingly for deletion of the para no. 17(iii) of the judgment and order dated March 27, 2023..," reports PTI news agency.
Referring to the constitutional protocol detailed in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs' 2013-14 report, the court highlighted the need for alignment with the Supreme Court's constitutional interpretation.
"...I am satisfied and of the view that the direction given at Para no. 17(iii) of the single judge dated March 27, 2023...which is impugned herein needs to be reviewed, as the direction given at para no. 17(iii) of the single judge is against the observation made in the constitution bench of the Supreme Court," the high court said in its 19-page verdict.
A bench of Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu stated that the judgment was passed in a "misconception of law" as the "petitioners failed to assist the court properly at the time of hearing of the said writ petition due to his misconception of fact and law".
Justice Gaiphulshillu also noted that the high court's direction was contrary to the Supreme Court&rsquo;s decision in the State of Maharashtra vs Milind &amp; Ors, in which the top court had observed that courts cannot modify, amend, or alter the ST list.
The high court's detailed 19-page verdict underlined the legislative limitations on judicial interference concerning Scheduled Tribe classifications, as outlined by a constitution bench ruling in November 2000.

One state police personnel was killed when suspected Kuki militants attacked a security forces vehicle in the border town of Moreh in Manipur's Tengnoupal district on Wednesday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Wangkhem Somorjit an IRB personnel attached to state police commando in Moreh. Somorjit hails from Malom in Imphal West district, they said.
The security forces also exchanged fire with suspected Kuki militants in three different locations in Moreh town on Wednesday morning, police said.
The militants hurled bombs and fired at a post of security forces near SBI Moreh, police said, adding that the security forces retaliated the fire.
The militants had also fired RPG shells at the temporary commando post damaging several vehicles parked in the vicinity.
The suspected Kuki militants fired at the security forces post, 48 hours after two suspects in the killing of a police officer were arrested by state forces in the border town, police said.
Earlier, following inputs of "likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquillity and grave danger to human lives and property within the revenue jurisdiction of Tengnoupal" the Manipur government imposed a total curfew from 12 am on January 16.
The order by District Magistrate Tengnoupal stated that the curfew shall, however, not apply to "agencies of the government employed in the enforcement of law and order and maintenance of essential services".
Police had arrested Phillip Khongsai and Hemokholal Mate, the two main suspects in the killing of SDPO Ch Anand in October last year. The two had fired at the vehicles of the security personnel following which police chased and overpowered them.
The two were later produced before the Judicial Magistrate Moreh and have been remanded to nine days police custody, police said.
Moreh-based civil bodies including Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal had vehemently condemned the arrest and demanded unconditional release of the two within 24 hours. KIT had also warned of serious repercussions if the two are not released.

Mobile towers catering to services within a 2km radius along adjoining areas between districts such as Chandel and Kakching, Churachandpur and Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kakching, Kangpokpi and Imphal West, Kangpokpi and Imphal East, Kangpokpi and Thoubal and Tengnoupal and Kakching will still face suspended operations, it said.
Mobile internet had been suspended in the state since May 3 following the outbreak of violence in the state.

According to the police report, the couple was later spotted by armed Kuki militants who took them to an unknown destination before executing them.
As per the initial probe, the couple, who were in a relationship, had eloped on July 6. They were spotted at a stone quarry near Laika before reaching Jouzangtek. Around 8 a.m., Singh picked up the girl from her tuition centre at Keishampat Mutum Leikhai in Imphal.
The 17-year-old girl's father had filed a case of abduction against her 20-year-old lover.

In a post on 'X' on Tuesday night, police said, "A video is being circulated on WhatsApp groups/Twitter showing that RAF personnel while dealing with violent mob are passing casteist remarks. The voice in the clip is not of RAF personnel. It appears that the video maker has intentionally recorded casteist remarks in his own voice to tarnish the image of RAF troops. The alleged video has been made to defame and discourage the RAF personnel who are performing their duty with high level of dedication and sincerity." "RAF personnel remained deployed in different parts of Imphal city for law and order duty throughout the day and even during night hours. RAF personnel works on the principle of use of minimum force and graded response to the situation" it said.

The panel asked the Manipur government to ensure that the victims' kin receive the stipulated ex-gratia payment.
The committee further said that the bodies that remain unclaimed must be disposed of in a respectable manner.
About 175 people have died in clashes between the Meitie and Kuki communities, of which 96 bodies remain unclaimed.
This is mainly because families of one community have been unable to visit hospitals in areas dominated by the other community to identify and claim the bodies.

Three Deputy Inspector General ranked officers, who include women officers, Lovely Katiyar and Nirmala Devi, will lead their respective teams to probe the violence cases in the state, they said.
All the officers will report to Joint Director Ghanshyam Upadhyay who will monitor the probe in various cases, they said.&nbsp;

Three persons including a father-son duo were killed by militants in Manipur&rsquo;s Bishnupur district late night on Friday, police said.
The three were gunned down while they were sleeping and later slashed with swords at Kwakta in the district, police said on Saturday morning, adding that the assailants came from Churachandpur.
"The three used to stay in a relief camp but had returned to their residences at Kwakta on Friday after the situation had improved,&rdquo; police said.
Soon after the incident, an irate mob gathered at Kwakta and wanted to head towards Churachandpur but was stopped by security personnel, police said.
"Three persons including one policeman were injured following heavy exchange of fire between state forces and militants near Kwakta on Saturday morning. The policeman sustained splinter injuries on his face. All three have been brought to Raj Medicity in Imphal for treatment. They are out of danger," police said.

The West Bengal assembly on Monday passed a motion condemning the violence in Manipur, amid opposition by the BJP.
State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay read out the motion in the House in the second half of the assembly session.
Speaking on the motion, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the role of the BJP and the Union government in tackling the situation in the strife-torn state.
"The Prime Minister should make a statement on Manipur. It is a matter of shame that the PM can go on foreign trips, but can't go to Manipur," she said.
Banerjee said, "if the Prime Minister is unable to restore peace in Manipur, then let us (INDIA) be allowed to restore peace." Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, said, "The discussion is illegal as the matter is sub-judice." "We will move court against this illegal decision to allow discussion on Manipur. This is against the ethos of federal structure," he said.
The BJP, which participated in the discussion, staged a walkout after the chief minister's speech.

Chennai-based publisher and blogger Badri Seshadri was arrested on Saturday for his alleged comments on judiciary while discussing Manipur violence in an interview to a Youtube channel.
The arrest was made early morning by the Perambalur district police following a complaint from a lawyer Kaviarasu, a resident of Kunnam, who claimed that he was disturbed by Seshadri&rsquo;s views on the judiciary, during an interview to a Youtube channel on July 22.
The police booked cases under IPC sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 153 A (1) (a) (promote enmity between groups through words), 505 (1) (b) (causing fear and alarm in public) against him.
Condemning the arrest, BJP state chief K Annamalai accused the ruling DMK of resorting to arrests as it was unable to handle opinions expressed by the common man.
Taking to Twitter Annamalai sought to know &ldquo;is it the responsibility of the police to carry out the vindictive agenda of the ruling DMK?&rdquo;

The EU parliament on Thursday urged India to end violence and protect minorities in the country's northeastern Manipur state, criticising "nationalistic rhetoric" it said was adding to tensions.
It came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a two-day visit to France, where he will attend the traditional Bastille Day military parade as a guest of honour.
MEPs expressed concern over clashes between Manipur's majority Meitei, who are mostly Hindus and live in and around the state capital Imphal, and the mainly Christian Kuki tribe in the surrounding hills.
The EU parliament said that the violence has "left at least 120 people dead, 50,000 displaced and over 1,700 houses and 250 churches destroyed".
MEPs called out "nationalistic rhetoric" and the parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday urging Indian authorities to "promptly halt the ethnic and religious violence and to protect all religious minorities".
The Kuki community had protested Meitei demands for reserved public job quotas and college admissions as a form of affirmative action.
This also stoked long-held fears among the Kuki that the Meitei might also be allowed to acquire land in areas currently reserved for tribal groups.
The resolution noted that "intolerance towards minority communities has contributed to the current violence and that there have been concerns about politically motivated, divisive policies that promote Hindu majoritarianism in the area."

Two civilians were injured as mobs clashed with security forces overnight in Imphal town and attempts were made to torch the houses of BJP leaders, officials said on Saturday.
In separate incidents, automatic gunfire was reported from Kwakta in Bishnupur district of Manipur and Kangvai in Churachandpur district through the night.
An attempt was also made to loot weapons from Iringbam police station in Imphal West. However, no weapons were stolen.
Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force held joint marches till midnight through the state capital to halt rioters from congregating.
A mob of approximately 1,000 people came together to try and burn down buildings near the palace compound.
RAF fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
