The court's comments came after it dismissed a cruelty case filed against a man and his family under this section, which the Telangana High Court had previously refused to dismiss.
Section 498(A), designed to protect married women from cruelty by their husbands or in-laws, carries severe penalties, including imprisonment for a minimum of three years and a fine. The case was filed by the wife after her husband petitioned for divorce. However, the Supreme Court highlighted that simply naming family members in a case, without solid evidence of their involvement, cannot serve as grounds for prosecution.
The court pointed out that Section 498(A) was intended to protect women from cruelty and ensure timely state intervention. However, it noted the increasing trend of using the law for personal vendettas, especially in light of rising marital disputes across the country. The Supreme Court warned that vague or generalized accusations could undermine the legal system and encourage manipulation by the wife or her family.
Further, the Court criticized the Telangana High Court for failing to reject the case, which it believed was filed with ulterior motives, aiming to settle personal grievances rather than address genuine issues of cruelty. The Supreme Court reiterated the importance of clear evidence before prosecuting individuals under Section 498(A).

Media baron Rupert Murdoch on Monday announced that he is ready to marry for the fifth time at the age of 92.
The billionaire announced his engagement to Ann Lesley Smith, a 66-year-old former police chaplain.
They met in September at an event at his vineyard in California.
Murdoch told the New York Post, one of his own publications: "I dreaded falling in love - but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I'm happy." He split with his fourth wife Jerry Hall last year.
The wedding will take place in late summer.
Murdoch was previously married to Australian flight attendant Patricia Booker, Scottish-born journalist Anna Mann, and Chinese-born entrepreneur Wendi Deng.
Murdoch said that he proposed to Smith on St Patrick's Day.
Smith's late husband was Chester Smith, a country singer and radio and TV executive.
"For us both it's a gift from God. We met last September," she told the newspaper.
"I'm a widow of 14 years. Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman... So I speak Rupert's language. We share the same beliefs," she said.
Murdoch, who has six children from his first three marriages, added: "We're both looking forward to spending the second half of our lives together." Murdoch's business empire includes the Fox News in the US and the tabloid The Sun in the UK.

As per the latest findings of the matrimonial website, Jeevansathi.com, software professionals received the most marriage proposals in 2022 in India.&nbsp;
In the survey, it was found that software professionals received 5.97 times more interest than teachers, followed by banking and admin professionals, HR, doctors, analysts, consultants, marketing professionals, professors and entrepreneurs.&nbsp;
The survey also stated that the age bracket for getting married has increased and the maximum number of people on the app are aged between 30-33.&nbsp;

A study called &lsquo;Switch Off&rsquo; conducted with Cybermedia Research on &lsquo;Smartphones and their impact on human relationships 2022' found that 67 per cent of people confessed using their smart phones while being with their partners, 89 per cent said they spend much less time conversing with their spouses and 88 per cent agreed that increased usage of smartphones is affecting their marriage.&nbsp;

In the preliminary investigation, police identified the victim as well as the accused following which an offence in this connection was registered with Gudhiyari police station.

A man was arrested for allegedly attacking a minor girl with a sharp-edged weapon and also dragging her on the road in the Gudhiyari area of Chhattisgarh's Raipur, police said on Sunday.
Sensation gripped the Gudhiyari area of Chhattisgarh's capital on late Saturday evening when a middle-aged man was seen dragging a 16-year-old minor girl with multiple stab wounds by hair. The incident came to light when a video of the incident went viral on a social media platform prompting the local police to launch a probe into the incident.
In the preliminary investigation, police identified the victim as well as the accused following which an offence in this connection was registered with Gudhiyari police station under the relevant Section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act, a police officer said.
The police said that the condition of the girl was stated to be critical and under constant observation of doctors
According to Raipur's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prashant Agrawal, the victim was working at the shop of the accused who was identified as Omkar Tiwari alias Manoj (47). Meanwhile, police sources averred that the accused had allegedly proposed to marry the minor girl and the same was declined by the victim's mother. Aggrieved by the refusal, the accused attacked the minor girl with a sharp-edged weapon and dragged her by her hair in huge public glare.&nbsp;

The state has an average of 31 per cent marriages in the &ldquo;prohibited age&rdquo;, Sarma said at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting.

The Assam Cabinet on Monday decided to book men who marry girls below 14 years in the state under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Assam has a high rate of maternal and infant mortality and the primary cause is child marriage.
The state has an average of 31 per cent marriages in the &ldquo;prohibited age&rdquo;, Sarma said at a press conference following the Cabinet meeting.
&ldquo;Men marrying girls in the age group of 14-18, will be tried under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and necessary steps will be taken against them under this law,&rdquo; the chief minister said.
The police have been directed to conduct a massive crackdown against child marriage across the state, he said.
A Child Protection Officer will be appointed in every village and it will be the duty of the Gram Panchayat Secretary to file a complaint against any child marriage taking place in their area, Sarma said.&nbsp;

Dinesh's parents filed a police complaint on May 13, and a kidnapping case was filed on May 18. When police questioned Kumari and her uncle, they confessed to the crime, and a murder charge was added in the FIR.

In a major decision, the Union Cabinet has cleared a proposal to raise the legal age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years.
The minimum age of marriage will now be the same for both men and women.
The Cabinet green signal has come more than a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the plan during his Independence Day address of 2020.
Reports quoting sources said that following the Cabinet&rsquo;s approval, the Government will introduce an amendment to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 in Parliament. The government will then also bring amendments to the Special Marriage Act and personal laws such as the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955.

The raising of the minimum age is based on recommendations submitted to Niti Aayog in December 2020 by the Centre&rsquo;s task force headed by Jaya Jaitly.
The task force had clarified that its reasoning behind the recommendation was never one of population control, but the empowerment of women.
Women&rsquo;s age of marriage was increased from 15 years to 18 years in 1978.

An online survey of 286 single Indians shows that nearly half or 43 per cent of respondents consider &lsquo;looks&rsquo; to be&nbsp;the&nbsp;foremost&nbsp;filtering&nbsp;criteria on a matrimonial profile.&nbsp;
Conducted by new-age matrimonial site betterhalf.ai, the survey found that after &lsquo;looks,&rsquo; around 22 per cent consider age, 19 per cent assess profession and 16 per cent look at the potential partner&rsquo;s salary before showing further interest in the profile.

The matchmaking app&rsquo;s CEO Pawan Gupta commented that looks in an online profile may not necessarily mean someone is good or bad looking but it also speaks to the quality and variation of pictures that make a profile enticing.
Interestingly,&nbsp;more&nbsp;young Indians&nbsp;now&nbsp;judge&nbsp;based on&nbsp;profession&nbsp;and salary rather than traditional factors such as&nbsp;caste, religion, community and culture.&nbsp;In the survey,&nbsp;58 per cent of respondents did not give high importance to the traditional factors while 48 per cent believed&nbsp;otherwise.
