A circular issued by the MCD on August 2 said a massive sterilisation programme for dogs will start from August 3 and will continue till August 30.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has taken back its plan of mass sterilisation of stray dogs in the particularly near G20 venues till the summit concludes.&nbsp;
The development comes after People for Animals termed the plan "illegal, impractical, and unwarranted".&nbsp;

However, the civic body on August 5 issued a fresh circular and said, the plan is withdrawn with immediate effect, adding on evaluation it realised there is no special need to conduct such an exercise.&nbsp;

A Class-8 student of an MCD school was allegedly bludgeoned to death by two men who dumped the body in a drain in southeast Delhi's Badarpur area, police said on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Saurabh (12), a resident of the Bilaspur camp in Molarband village in the city. He was a student of a school run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at Tajpur Pahari, police said.
Around 8.20 pm on Thursday, a PCR call was received at the Badarpur police station, informing that a schoolboy was killed by two men, police said.
When a police team reached the spot between the Khatushyam park and Tajpur Road village, the body of the boy in a school uniform was found lying in a drain. A schoolbag containing textbooks and other study material was also found at the spot. At a distance of about six yards from the schoolbag, four-five blood-stained stones and a blood-stained cotton towel were also found, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Rajesh Deo said.
The scene of crime was photographed and the exhibits were taken into possession, he added.

A day after shocking BJP and AAP came to blows in the MCD House over the election of civic body's standing committee, the Delhi High Court on Saturday stayed the re-election for six members of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which was scheduled for February 27.
Justice Gaurang Kanth, in a special hearing held on a court holiday, said prima facie it appeared that the mayor, who was also the returning officer, is conducting the re-election on Monday without declaring results of the previous poll held on February 24 which is in violation of regulations.
The high court said the regulations nowhere reflect that the Delhi mayor has authority to declare the election of Standing Committee members as null and void.

In a statement on Saturday, the MCD said it has "envisioned a comprehensive and pro-active plan to prevent dengue this year with special focus on G-20 meeting venues, monuments, hotels, shopping mall, famous markets and other places of gathering of the delegates".
In this comprehensive plan, one of the AI-based platforms i.e unmanned aerial vehicle or drone-based vector surveillance and concurrent anti-larval spray activity will be done on major drains to prevent breeding of mosquito larvae, it said.
Larvivorous fish will be released in water bodies to prevent mosquito larva breeding through biological control methods. Fogging will be carried out as per NCVBDCP guidelines whenever required, keeping the NGT orders in mind, in an eco-friendly manner, the statement said.

The second municipal House held on January 24 was briefly adjourned after the oath-taking ceremony, and was later adjourned till the next date by the pro tem presiding officer.
After that, the House was adjourned on last Monday again for the third time, a month after the first municipal House.
AAP has alleged that the mayoral election could not be held as the BJP was "strangulating democracy and the Constitution of India", while the saffron party accused the Aam Aadmi Party of coming out with excuses to stall the mayoral poll and blamed it for the stalemate.
AAP had emerged as a clear winner in the December polls, bagging 134 wards and ending the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body. The BJP won 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine wards in the 250-member municipal House.
The civic body in Delhi had 272 wards across its three corporations &ndash; NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC &ndash; which existed from 2012-2022, before being reunified into a sole MCD, which formally came into existence on May 22 last year.
The municipal House in Delhi on February 6 failed to elect a mayor following a ruckus over the decision to allow aldermen to vote in the mayoral poll, even as AAP alleged a "planned conspiracy" by the BJP to stall the process.

"Municipal House in Delhi adjourned till next date," Presiding Officer Satya Sharma said. The MCD House convened at around 11:30 AM, after a 30-minute delay. Sharma announced that elections to the posts of mayor, deputy mayor, and Standing Committee members will be held simultaneously.
"Aldermen will be allowed to vote in the elections for mayor, deputy mayor and Standing Committee members," she said.

In the 4 December 2022 election, the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 wards, relegating the ruling BJP to second place with 104. AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi against BJP's Rekha Gupta for the post of mayor. The candidates for the post of deputy mayor are - Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of AAP and Kamal Bagri of BJP.
The post of mayor in Delhi sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category.

The BJP is fielding Rekha Gupta, councillor from Shalimar Bagh, for the post of mayor. Kamal Bagri, councillor from Ram Nagar, has been selected as candidate for the deputy mayor's post.
In the recent polls, the BJP won 104 seats, but lost to the Aam Aadmi Party which won 134 in the 250-ward body.

Election to pick the new mayor of Delhi after the high-stakes municipal polls will be held on January 6 and the last date to file nominations is December 27, officials said on Wednesday.

"The elections to the coveted posts of mayor, deputy mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and six members of the standing committee from the House, will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00AM during the first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi," the MCD said in a statement.

250 councillors were elected after the high-stakes civic polls which were held on December 4.
According to the DMC Act 1957, "The Corporation shall at its first meeting in each year elect one of its members to be the Chairperson to be known as the Mayor and another member to be the Deputy Mayor of the Corporation." The MCD said that the last date for filing nominations is December 27.
"The nominations can be filed in the office of Municipal Secretary on any working day between 11 AM and 5 PM. Election for the six members of standing committee will also be held in the first meeting of the House. The post of a mayor of the MCD is reserved for female member in the first year," it said.
The post of mayor sees five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two also being in the open category.
The election to the top post will take place nearly a month after the civic polls, results for which were announced on December 7.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the MCD polls by bagging 134 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP in the MCD, and reducing the Congress to just nine seats in a House of 250 members.
The post of mayor is considered prestigious and a Delhi mayor wielded a lot of power until the erstwhile unified MCD, set up in 1958, was trifurcated into North Delhi, South Delhi and East Delhi municipal corporations in 2012 with a mayor each for three civic bodies. The civic bodies were reunified in May 2022.
Former mayor of North Delhi Jai Prakash, who served in the post from 2020-2021, earlier said, according to the old DMC Act, which governs the MCD, besides elected councillors, some nominated members also are eligible to vote in a mayoral poll.
"Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs representing constituencies which comprise wholly or partly the area of the corporation, and one-fifth of the members of the Delhi Assembly representing constituencies, to be nominated by the Speaker, and chairpersons of various municipal committees can vote in a mayoral poll," he said.
Ten aldermen are nominated to the MCD by the Lt Governor, but they don't vote in a mayoral election, he added.
There are no anti-defection law in the context of the civic body here, experts say.&nbsp;
