The legendary cricketer is also finding current ODI cricket, a bit of a drag and wouldn't mind a change in format.
Three of the Border-Gavaskar Tests between India and Australia recently ended inside two-and-a-half days, leading to a massive criticism of pitches, but Tendulkar said it is part and parcel of cricketer's job to play on different surfaces.
"We need to understand one thing, Test cricket should be engaging and it should not be about how many days it lasts, five days or whatever. We (cricketers) are meant to play on different surfaces; be it a bouncy track, a fast track, slow track, turning track, swinging conditions, seaming conditions with different balls," opined Tendulkar on Sports Tak.
He also said that at a time when the ICC, MCC and other cricketing bodies are talking about making Test cricket entertaining and the No.1 format, there was no harm in matches ending in three days. Besides, touring teams should not think that they will get featherbeds and they should make thorough preparations.
"When you tour, there are not easy conditions. You need to understand what's happening, assess everything and then start planning things. For me, the most important factor is the kind of surface that we play on because that is the heart of Test cricket.
"All the guys, including the ICC, MCC, etc, we are talking about Test cricket. How Test cricket can continue to be the No.1 format. So, if we want that, then we need to have something for the bowlers because bowlers ask a question (off) every ball and the batter has to answer that. So, if that question itself is not interesting enough, how are you going to have more eyeballs?'
He indicated sports should be result-oriented and everyone should go home knowing "who won, who lost".
"We should not be bothered too much about the number of days. I feel it should be whether the match was exciting enough or not. Nobody wants to go back home not knowing who has won and who has lost," added Tendulkar.
He also said there was no harm in giving the new ball to a spinner if the surface so demanded.
"Instead of a fast bowler bowling an opening spell, why cannot a spinner be bowling a wonderful spell. It's just a different kind of surface we are playing on and that should also be challenging enough for batters to go out there and express themselves ... if somebody has batted well, he gets runs, simple." With former India coach Ravi Shastri wanting ODI cricket to change with the times and be made a 40-over-a-side affair, Tendulkar agreed that the format was getting monotonous and suggested a way to make it entertaining.
"It's getting monotonous, without a doubt. There are two parts to it. One is the current format and the next which I feel that should be played.
"The current format, which has been there for a while now is two new balls (per innings). When you have two new balls, you have kind of eliminated reverse swing. Even though, we are in the 40th over of the game, it's just the 20th over of that ball. And the ball only starts reversing around the 30th over. That element is missing today because of two new balls. The current format, I feel, is heavy on bowlers." Right now, the game is becoming too predictable. From the 15th to the 40th over, its losing its momentum. It's getting boring.
He opined, that while there was no harm in retaining the 50-over format, teams should alternate between batting and bowling after every 25 overs, as that will give the opponents level-playing ground and take toss, dew factor and other conditions out of the equation.
"So, both teams bowl in the first and the second half. Commercially too it is more viable as there will be three innings breaks instead of two." Tendulkar advocated that with the Covid-19 pandemic history now, the ICC should reverse its rule on disallowing the use of saliva to shine the ball.
"I am no medical expert but I think it should (saliva) be back because it happened over 100 years. Guys have used saliva and nothing drastic has happened. A couple of years in between were challenging and rightly so that decision (to ban the use of saliva to polish the ball) was taken, but now it's (Covid-19) behind us," said the legendary batter.

The Indian cricket team has put additional focus on workload management ahead of the ODI World Cup at home but senior pacer Mohammed Shami believes there is no better way to maintain optimum fitness than playing matches regularly.
Earlier this month, the BCCI had announced that the National Cricket Academy will work in tandem with the IPL franchisees to monitor the fitness of the "targeted" players for the ODI World Cup in October-November. Shami is a key member of the squad.
"I always prefer playing matches over practice. It is always better to play maximum number of games to get ready for a big event. Load is being managed and it is being managed properly.
"I just hope the main players stay in a good zone (ahead of the World Cup)," said Shami after a match-winning spell in the second ODI against New Zealand here on Saturday.
Shami troubled the New Zealand batters with his seam movement to end with figures of three for 18 in six overs. The visitors were bowled out for 108 and India chased down the target in 20.1 overs. Mohammed Siraj too made the ball talk. His senior partner Shami said the wicket was damp early but conditions were not overtly bowling friendly.
"It was a damp wicket, but it was important to keep good line and length. All the bowlers were disciplined and the result is for all to see.
"Conditions were not as good as it seemed. They got out early but conditions were not overtly bowler friendly. We dismissed them cheaply by bowling a testing length." On his role as a senior bowler in the team, he said: "As far as I am concerned, I always talk to the bowler. I know he is putting in the effort but, at times, you don't get the desired results and that can improve if you talk to your bowling partner. That is the role I like to play when I am bowling.
"My role hasn't changed since I have come into the team (laughs). The only thing is to keep working on the fitness and diet," said Shami.
With the series already in the bag, Shami said the team could give opportunities to uncapped Rajat Patidar and Umran Malik in the third and final ODI in Indore on Tuesday.
"The management will take a call on that but they can be given an opportunity now that the series is won," he said.
Shami also said that it is too early to finalise the squad combination with the World Cup more than six months away.
"If people still doubt the Indian team despite the results it has given in the last four to six years, World Cup is still long time away. We need to play a lot of games and need to try out more players before that," Shami added

The in-form Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav "understand" that they will have to wait for their chances in the ODI format, India's batting coach Vikram Rathour said on Saturday.
Despite their exploits in T20Is in recent times, both the players were not considered for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka in the ongoing three-match series, leaving the fans and few former players surprised.
"They are not forced (to sit out), I mean, the others are doing good as well. As players they do understand that, and they need to wait for their opportunity, and they are preparing for that, they train hard and whenever that opportunity comes, they do well and hold on to their places," Rathour said.
While Surya is the world's number one batter in T20 batter and enjoying a prolific run in the shortest format, Ishan came into the Sri Lanka series on the back of his ODI double hundred in Bangladesh.
Asked if Ishan can be asked to bat in the middle order, Rathour said, "At the moment, he has been picked as an opener but as a batting unit we are flexible and if there is a need to try somebody like Ishan in the middle order, we might have to. At the moment though, he is being looked at as an opener." When the discussion turned to Surya, the batting coach said, "He has great potential, he has been in great form, it is great to have him in the reserve, and hopefully, when the time comes, he will take that opportunity and do well for the team. It is great to have such a versatile player in the team." Regarding the ODI World Cup scheduled later in the year, Rathour said "20 games are enough" to zero in on the core group of players for the showpiece.
"I think, 20 games are enough, if we can shortlist the players, that the core we are focusing on. As team management we do understand which are the players we are looking to focus on. If we have clarity then I think 20 games are enough to work on those certain areas.
"We have always been a good 50 over format team, just some areas to fine-tune and 20 games are enough to do that." When asked about the lower batting order, Rathour said, 'they need to bat more in the nets, that is the thing we strive for, we make them bat more, the more they bat the better they become. We encourage them to keep batting at the nets even when they go and play for their states and IPL'
"That is what has been told to them. We want them to get better and if we can get more runs from the lower order, it will be great. That's an area we are looking to get better.
"Axar Patel has been batting well actually, he has always been a good player, we always believe he has a lot of potential in his batting as well and that is what he is showing lately.
"As a team, it gives us lots of options as far as playing all-rounders is concerned. We have three guys who can bat well, I am sure (Ravindra) Jadeja will be back soon, then we have Axar and Washington Sundar who can bat. It is great to have those options." Coming back to the current rubber, he said the team requires improvements in certain areas.
"We have already won the series but there are few areas where we want to get better, we are looking to improve. This being a World Cup year, there are still areas we are working on and this is one more opportunity to do that against a decent team."

Indian pacer Deepak Chahar will not play any further part in India's ODI series against South Africa as he has been replaced by Washington Sundar due to injury.

Spin bowler Washington Sundar replaced injured pacer Deepak Chahar in India's squad for the remainder of the two ODIs against South Africa.
In a statement, BCCI informed that Chahar had a stiff back after the third T20I against the Proteas and subsequently didn't feature in India's Playing XI in the 1st ODI.
The statement further states that the 30-year-old pacer will now head back to National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru and will be monitored by the Medical Team.
This comes as a major blow for Team India's T20 World Cup preparations as well, given Chahar is a standby player for the marquee event.
Meanwhile, Sudar, who has also had injury issues in his short career so far, last played an ODI in February. He has played four Tests, four ODIs, and 31 T20s for India.

With FInch gone, pacer Pat Cummins' name was doing the rounds to become the next Aussie captain. However, with Warner throwing his name in the hat, the board might consider the southpaw as well.
