Jason Gillespie stepped down from his role as Pakistan&rsquo;s Test team coach and former pacer Aaqib Javed has replaced the Australian for the upcoming two-match series against South Africa, PCB announced on Thursday.
Pakistan will play two Tests against the Proteas from December 26, and they are already in the Rainbow Nation for the white-ball leg of the tour.
Aaqib is currently the interim coach of Pakistan white ball outfits.
Gillespie, whose contract was set to expire in 2026, resigned after the Pakistan Cricket Board didn&rsquo;t review the contract of Tim Nielsen, who was brought in on the recommendation of the former Aussie quick, as the high performance coach of the team.
Gillespie was also peeved at the PCB&rsquo;s decision to absolve him of the powers of team selection and involvement in pitch preparation.
It may be recalled that Gary Kirsten, who joined as the white ball side&rsquo;s coach along with Gillespie, had resigned before Pakistan left for the series in Australia, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Kirsten had resigned citing differences with the PCB on the matters of authority.
Both Gillespie and Kirsten were appointed on a two-year contract before the T20 World Cup 2024 and the PCB had promised a new era for the Pakistan team.
But once Aaqib was brought in as senior selector and PCB granted him full powers including in team selection, the foreign coaches started falling out with the board.

Pakistan will announce new set of coaches for red and white ball formats for the national team by the end of this month, a Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Friday.
The PCB also confirmed that besides South Africa's Gary Kirsten and Australia's Jason Gillispie, the board had received applications from a couple of reputed coaches by the April 15 deadline. The PCB official said that while they are interested in Kirsten and Gillispie, the new applicants are also in the fray. "The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the long-term appointments of coaches will be done through a due process and all commitments would be met by the board," the source added.
The last time PCB followed due process in appointing coaches was in 2019 when it named Misbah-ul-Haq as the head coach and chief selector of the national side. Since then, all appointments have either been made on a consultancy or interim basis.
Another reliable source in the PCB said that this time, the board would only invite those candidates for interviews who apply for the coaching positions.
"Even in Kirsten and Gillispie's case though, the board has held direct negotiations with them, and they remain top candidates to be appointed head coaches, (but) they were also told to apply through due process by the deadline," the source said.
He admitted that with some interesting candidates have also applied for the head coach's position, the PCB will require time till the end of the month to reach a decision and make an announcement.
"The PCB chief doesn't want names disclosed at any stage, and names would only be revealed once announcements are made," stated the source.
The PCB has also kept April 20 as the deadline for candidates interested in applying for assistant coaches' positions.
"Even Azhar Mahmood has to go through the process, and currently, he was named head coach for the New Zealand series on a consultancy basis," the source added.&nbsp;

Wasim took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce his decision, having played 121 international matches across ODIs and T20Is for Pakistan.
Imad's final outing for his country was in April this year in a T20I against New Zealand at Rawalpindi. The Welsh-born Wasim made his international debut with the Men in Green in May 2015 in a T20I against Zimbabwe at Lahore.
"In recent days, I have been doing a lot of thinking about my international career, and I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to announce my retirement from international cricket," the 34-year-old Wasim wrote in his retirement note.
"I would like to thank the PCB for all their support over the years - it has truly been an honour to represent Pakistan. Each of my 121 appearances across the ODI and T20I formats was a dream come true." Wasim, a left-handed batter, played 55 ODIs scoring 986 runs averaging 42.86 and he plucked 44 wickets with his left-arm spin.
From 66 T20Is, Wasim made 486 runs and took 65 wickets.

On the day, purposeful batting by Salman Ali Agha (51 off 45 balls) or tail-ender Haris Rauf's (35 off 23 balls) rearguard action was a lesson for the top-order.
Earlier, England's star-studded batting line-up saved their best for the last as half-centuries by Ben Stokes, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow powered the 2019 champions to a commendable total.
Premier all-rounder Stokes, who missed their first three matches owing to a hip injury, headlined their batting show in a 76-ball 84. Bairstow (59 off 61 balls) and Root (60 off 72 balls) also made handsome contributions to bolster the total.
Having scored 339/9 against the Netherlands in their last match, this was England's second successive 300-plus total.
England batters however failed to fire at the death as, from being 240/2 in 40 overs, they managed 97 runs in the last 10 overs, a period when they also lost seven wickets.
Haris Rauf returned with 3/64, while Shaheen Shah Afridi bagged 2/72 and denied Stokes a well-deserved century by cleaning up the left-hander with a reverse-swinging delivery that tailed in.
Meanwhile, Rauf also became the first Asian bowler to earn the ignominy of giving away 500 runs in the tournament.
The 32-year-old Stokes, who came out of ODI retirement to take part in England's title defence, smashed two sixes and 11 fours while playing full-blooded reverse sweeps and mighty pulls.
Since his return, he has made his impact felt with three back-to-back 50-plus scores which also included a century, as he signed off the World Cup with 304 runs at 50.66.
Premier batter Root has been the weak link so far in the World Cup, but Stokes' fury also rubbed on him as he ended up with a fifty-plus knock.
The duo consolidated after a quick start in a 132-run partnership that came off just 131 balls.

In the video shared by Pakistani influencer Momin Saqib, a Pakistani fan can be seen engaged in a heated discussion with the policeman. The fan questions why it's acceptable to chant 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' while objecting to 'Pakistan Zindabad' during a match involving the Pakistani team. He emphasizes that as a Pakistani supporting his team in India, it's only natural for him to express his support using this chant.

At the moment, Pakistan's World Cup campaign is stuck against a huge boulder primarily because of their bowlers' inability to fire as a unit, the latest setback being a 62-run defeat against Australia here.
It was their second successive defeat in the tournament after a seven-wicket battering by India.
Shaheen Shah Afridi looked to have regained his touch with a five-wicket haul, but Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali were taken apart by David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.
Alarmingly, the Pakistan bowlers did not look to have a Plan B when riding on a rough sea, and their bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted to his side not building a bowling partnership.
"The last couple of games, that is one of our talking points, to string partnerships together. I think in India that is the key, create pressure from both ends, and keep the stumps in play, and at the moment, we're not doing that.
"We are not consistent with the ball. If you are going to lift that trophy on the 19th then we need to create consistency from both ends," said Morkel after the match.
The former South African pacer said the team missed the presence of injured pacer Naseem Shah and his new ball alliance with Afridi in this tournament.
"Naseem is a quality bowler if you look at his stats, the consistency he gave us with the new ball upfront was amazing. The partnership he formed with Shaheen was&hellip; this we always talked about bowling partnerships. Naseem is a big loss," he said.
However, Morkel said Rauf and Ali were trying to learn and adjust to the demands of bowling in powerplays in ODIs, a role the pacers are not accustomed to.
"It's a slightly new role for Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf bowling with the new ball in powerplays. These guys used to bowl sort of outside the powerplay. But I think, with the opportunity we've given them they are standing up to the occasion.
"It is quite tough with a new ball in India. The margins are small. So, they are learning and trying their heart out," he said.
Morkel said the way forward for Rauf in ODIs was to increase his situational awareness and add new tricks to his repertoire.
"He is still one of the go-to guys, one of the X-factors. He can look at gaming awareness and maybe mix your pace a little bit more. But he's a guy who always gives 100%. I can't fault him for anything," he added.
However, Morkel saw one bright omen in the re-emergence of left-arm pacer Afridi during the match against the Aussies.
"We had honest conversations. We sort of unpacked the opening spells of the World Cup so far and looked at areas where we can look to attack and be smart. Perhaps, he was trying too hard. Tonight, he ran in and hit those hard lines, changed his game strategy, and mixed his pace up.
"He put up a performance like that on a tough bowling day against a team that is very aggressive, and it is a pleasing thing for me," said Morkel.

The Men in Green who won the toss posted a 268/8 in 50 overs courtesy of a 79-ball 67 by Mohd Rizwan and 60 off 86 innings by skipper Babar Azam. The Pakistan pacers once again wreaked havoc as they bundled out the team for 209 in 48.4 overs. While Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf got 2 each, Shadab Khan picked 3. Mujeeb ur Rahman was the highest score for Afghanistan with an electrifying 37 ball 64 as he also raced to a new Afghan record for the fastest 50 in just 26 balls. Rashid Khan who made a 27-ball 50 last year against Ireland was the previous holder of the record.

The Pakistan government gave clearance to the country's senior men's team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup, ending months of uncertainty over their participation in the showpiece.

A press release from the foreign ministry informed that Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its team to India to compete in the upcoming World Cup.

The Pakistan government on Sunday gave clearance to the country's senior men's team to travel to India for the 2023 World Cup, ending months of uncertainty over their participation in the showpiece.
A press release from the foreign ministry informed that Pakistan has consistently maintained that sports should not be mixed with politics. It has, therefore, decided to send its team to India to compete in the upcoming World Cup.
"Pakistan believes that the state of bilateral relations with India should not stand in the way of fulfilling its international sports-related obligations," the release said.
The ministry said that Pakistan, however, has deep concerns about the security of its team and it would convey them to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Indian authorities.
"We expect that the full safety and security of the Pakistan cricket team will be ensured during its visit to India," the release said.
It also said that Pakistan's decision shows its "constructive and responsible approach"

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially formed the Cricket Technical Committee (CTC), and it will be led by former captain Misbah-ul-Haq. The committee will also include former skippers Inzamam-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez as its members. Additionally, the head of the PCB's domestic cricket department and a representative of the chairman of the Cricket Management Committee will be part of the committee.
There were prior speculations about Zaka Ashraf forming the cricket committee with Misbah as its head, and it was reported that a meeting had already taken place. However, the official announcement of the committee came after another former captain, Rashid Latif, clarified that he had no association with any PCB committee.
The Cricket Technical Committee's primary role will be to provide recommendations on various cricket-related matters to the chairman, who will make the final decisions. This includes areas such as the overall domestic structure, scheduling, playing conditions, appointments of national selection committees and national team coaches, central and domestic contracts, and plans for the development of umpires, referees, and curators.
The committee will also have the authority to invite additional cricket experts and will report regularly to the head of the PCB Management Committee.
Speaking about the formation of the committee, Zaka Ashraf stated, "These three former captains possess great cricket knowledge and understand the demands of modern-day cricket. Domestic cricket structure is a pillar of any cricketing nation. We have to make it fool-proof and its structure progressive." "The presence of Misbah, Inzamam and Hafeez, three of Pakistan's most experienced and decorated cricketers who rose through the domestic ranks, will help us in providing our cricketers the best system to thrive so that we can produce the best cricketers."
