The teachers of state-run and state-aided schools in West Bengal-&nbsp; whose services were temporarily extended by the Supreme Court on Thursday- expressed dissatisfaction over what they termed as a "short-term relief." They asserted that only permanent reinstatement would bring them justice.
The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the state government to initiate a fresh recruitment process by May 31 and complete it by December 31.
It also instructed the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) and the state government to file a compliance affidavit detailing the initiation of the recruitment process by the deadline.
Pankaj Roy, one of the nearly 26,000 teaching and non-teaching staff whose appointments through the 2016 SSC recruitment drive were annulled, told PTI, "With all respect to the Honourable Supreme Court, let&rsquo;s voice our dissatisfaction over the order which has allowed us to attend classes only till December 31.
What happens after that? The SC has asked the state to issue a fresh notification. We&rsquo;ve already made it clear that we will not sit for fresh exams after clearing the 2016 recruitment test as eligible candidates."
Roy, a political science teacher at a secondary school in North Bengal, had observed a three-day hunger strike last week outside the WBSSC office in Acharya Bhavan, demanding the publication of a list distinguishing &lsquo;tainted&rsquo; from &lsquo;untainted&rsquo; candidates from the 2016 recruitment batch.
He also urged the WBSSC to clarify to the apex court that eligible teachers should not be dismissed.
"The SC order doesn&rsquo;t even address the case of non-teaching candidates," he added.
"This omission, in our view, results from the state government and SSC&rsquo;s attempt to create division among protesting sacked staff," he added.
Dhritish Mondal of Jogyo Sikshak Manch (Eligible Teachers&rsquo; Platform) echoed the sentiment, saying, "We are not tainted candidates. This is even acknowledged in the SC order. Then why should our services be extended only till December 31? As per service rules, we should serve till we reach the superannuation age of 60. If the WBSSC knows who is tainted and who is not, why can&rsquo;t they tell the SC clearly?" Mondal emphasised that the teachers, who had qualified through the 2016 recruitment process and served diligently, were unwilling to sit for fresh exams.
"This short-term extension means little after all our hard work and years of service. We will continue our protests until we get justice in the truest sense," he said.
While 70 members of the Manch launched a sit-in protest in Delhi on April 16, over 100 others have been staging an indefinite demonstration at Esplanade in Kolkata since April 3.
Asked whether the teachers would resume classes from Saturday, the protesters said, "We will decide soon. If we do return to school, it will be solely in the interest of the students, who are suffering."
A member of the managing committee of Bishnupur High School in Bankura district said the institution faced serious academic disruptions after the dismissal of eight teachers.
"With today&rsquo;s development, we are trying to reach out to the affected teachers and request them to resume classes from Saturday," the member said.
Attempts to reach West Bengal Board of Secondary Education President Ramanuj Ganguly were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.
On Thursday, in a significant relief to West Bengal, the Supreme Court extended the services of teachers found "untainted" by the CBI probe into the 2016 SSC recruitment scam.
A bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar observed that school education had been severely impacted following mass terminations and acknowledged that new recruitment would require time.
However, the relief was not extended to Group &lsquo;C&rsquo; and &lsquo;D&rsquo; non-teaching staff.
Earlier, on April 3, the apex court had invalidated the appointments of 25,753 teachers and staff in state-run and aided schools, calling the recruitment process "vitiated and tainted," and ordered the recovery of salaries from those deemed to have obtained appointments improperly.

According to the Princeton Alumni Weekly, Coimbatore-born Achinthya and Hassan Sayed were arrested when the student protesters were setting up the tents in the university courtyard on the morning of April 25.&nbsp;
The college alumni magazine wrote about the arrests. It read, "A document shared by protesters identified the arrested students as Achinthya Sivalingan and Hassan Sayed. Urvi, a first-year Ph.D. student who asked to be identified only by her first name, called the arrest violent and said zip ties were put around their wrists."
Jennifer Morrill, a spokesperson for the University, released a statement about the arrest. Jennifer said, "Pitching tents violated University policy, leading to the arrest of the two students for trespassing after repeated warnings from the Department of Public Safety to cease the activity and leave the area.&rdquo;
Achinthya Sivalingan is pursuing a Master&rsquo;s in Public Affairs (MPA) in International Development at Princeton. Sayed is a fifth-year PhD student in the economics department at Princeton.&nbsp;

As per the reports, the students blocked the National Highway 122 B in protest. The police reached the site to control the situation.&nbsp;
The police were accused of slapping the students after which they starting pelting stones at SUV of the education officer. However, the police said that they requested students to settle the matter, but they turned violent.
"There are more student admissions than the capacity of school classrooms here. The students who did not find a place to sit inside started protesting and blocked a road. We are trying to run the school in two shifts. A probe is on," said Neeraj Kumar, SDO, Mahnar, Vaishali.
The school administration said that the students were influenced by external elements.

Trump did not provide any details on social media about how he knew about the expected arrest. In his postings, he repeated his lies that the 2020 presidential election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden was stolen and he urged his followers to &ldquo;Protest, take our nation back!&rdquo; That language evoked the message from the then-president that preceded the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

On Friday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the Assembly that onion cultivators will be given a financial relief of Rs 350 a quintal and appealed to them to call off the protest.

Protesting farmers and tribals, who were on their way to Mumbai from Nashik district of Maharashtra, called off their long march on Saturday with their demands being taken into consideration in the state legislature and ground-level officials receiving orders to execute the government's orders, a CPI(M) MLA said. The march had started from Dindori town, located around 195 km away from Mumbai, on March 12 demanding relief of Rs 600 per quintal to onion growers hit by price crash, 12-hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers, and waiver of farm loans. They had reached Thane district's Vasind town, around 80 km from Mumbai.
On Friday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the Assembly that onion cultivators will be given a financial relief of Rs 350 a quintal and appealed to them to call off the protest.
"Our demands have been met. All the demands by the farmers were taken into consideration in the state legislature and collectors and tehsildars have been issued orders. He said the participants have started heading back to their homes, and the remaining people will leave by Saturday evening or Sunday.

Concern grew on Tuesday over the well-being of five young Iranian women who filmed themselves dancing without headscarves in a viral video, after allegations they had been arrested and forced into confessing.
The footage showed the women dancing with bare midriffs beneath highrises in the Tehran residential district of Ekbatan to the song "Calm Down" by Nigerian Afrobeats singer and rapper Rema.
It spread widely on TikTok and other social media channels last week around International Women's Day on March 8.
Activists, apparently from the Ekbatan area, first posted the video on Telegram and Twitter. They said authorities had been asking residents in the area if they knew the women, based on the footage.
On Tuesday the activists alleged the women had been detained and forced into making a video in which they expressed regret.
In the Islamic republic it is illegal for women to dance in public as well as to not wear the Islamic headscarf.
Abolition of the obligatory headscarf rule has been one of the chief demands of the protest movement that erupted in September after the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who had been arrested for allegedly violating the dress code.
After the initial viral footage of the five, another video emerged on social media of four women, their heads fully covered, stepping forward one by one to express regret.
It appeared to have been filmed in a similar Ekbatan area, but neither the video nor the circumstances in which it was made could be verified.
Whether the women had been released was also not immediately clear.
Ekbatan, a middle-income area popular with young professionals and families, saw repeated anti-regime actions in the past few months.
Rema retweeted video of the women dancing with their long hair uncovered and commented: "To all the beautiful women who are fighting for a better world, I'm inspired by you, I sing for you and I dream with you."
The song "Calm Down" became a global hit after Rema issued a remix with superstar Selena Gomez.
The video also caught the attention of German Member of the European Parliament Hannah Neumann.
"On Women's day, they published this video. Wouldn't be worth news, but they danced in Iran," Neumann tweeted.
"The regime investigated, put them in prison, forced them into confessions and to wear hijab," she alleged.
During the protests hundreds of people have been killed, including dozens of security force personnel.
Thousands were arrested for participating in what Iranian officials described as "riots" and blamed on hostile forces linked to the United States, Israel and their allies.

Iran announced on Monday that the country's supreme leader has pardoned around 22,000 people arrested in the recent anti-government protests that swept the Islamic Republic.
The statement by Iran's judiciary head, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi, offered for the first time a glimpse of the full scope of the government's crackdown that followed the demonstrations over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained by the country's morality police.
It also suggests that Iran's theocracy now feels secure enough to admit the scale of the unrest, which represented one of the most-serious challenges to the establishment since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Tens of thousands also were detained in the purges that followed the revolution.
However, anger still remains in the country as it struggles through the collapse of the nation&rsquo;s currency, the rial, economic woes, and uncertainty over its ties to the wider world after the collapse of Tehran&rsquo;s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers.
Ejehi said a total of 82,656 prisoners and those facing charges had been pardoned. Of those, some 22,000 had been arrested amid the demonstrations, he said.
Those pardoned had not committed theft or violent crimes, he added.
His comments suggest that the true total of those detained in the demonstrations is even greater.
In February, Iran had acknowledged &ldquo;tens of thousands&rdquo; had been detained in the protests.
Monday's acknowledgement from Ejehi offered an even higher than what activists had previously cited.
However, there's been no mass release of prisoners documented in recent days by Iranian media reports or activists.
More than 19,700 people have been arrested during the protests, according to Human Rights Activists in Iran, a group that&rsquo;s been tracking the crackdown.
At least 530 people have been killed as authorities violently suppressed demonstrations, the group said.
Iran has not offered a death toll for months.
The announcement also came ahead of next week's celebration of Nowruz, the Persian New Year.
On Tuesday, some in Iran also mark nearly 4,000-year-old Persian tradition known as the Festival of Fire that's linked to the Zoroastrian religion.
Hard-liners discourage such celebrations, viewing them as pagan holdovers.

Maharashtra farmer sets onion crop on fire in protest against govt as prices tumble

Distressed by the crash in prices of onions, a farmer in Nashik district of Maharashtra lit a bonfire of the crop in protest against the government's policies and to highlight the plight of growers.
The protest was held on the day of the Holika festival which is marked by the burning of bonfires in Maharashtra.
Onion cultivators are battling a crisis as the prices of the kitchen staple have taken a hit at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Lasalgaon, the largest wholesale onion market in Asia, in Nashik.
The price per kilogram of onion came down to Rs 2 to Rs 4, which angered the growers, who had stopped the auction at the APMC last week for a day.
Krishna Dongre, a farmer from Mathulthan village in Yeola taluka who burnt the onion crop cultivated on one-and-half acres of land, had printed an invitation card announcing the agitation which had gone viral on social media.
"The Union and state governments have left the farmers to their fate. In their power struggle, they do not pay attention to whether the farmer survives or dies. This is a black day not only for Maharashtra but also for the nation as a farmer has been forced to light the bonfire of onions," he said and blamed the policies of the government.
Farmers from nearby villages were present at the protest.
The drop in onion prices has angered farmers in Nashik district as well as in the rest of the state and they are staging agitations.

Security on Monday morning was beefed up around the BJP headquarters in Delhi where the AAP has called for a &ldquo;big protest&rdquo;.
An AAP functionary said in Delhi that all MLAs have been asked to gather 200 people from their respective constituencies for the protest.
Delhi Police has erected barricades on several roads leading to DDU Marg where both the BJP headquarters and the AAP office are located.
Paramilitary forces have also been deployed to maintain law and order.
The Aam Aadmi Party is observing the day as a "black day".
The party alleged that 80 per cent of its leaders have been &ldquo;arrested&rdquo; by police, and questioned whether anyone can be in &ldquo;police detention&rdquo; for 24 hours.

The demonstrators had gathered under the banner of the 'Old Pension Scheme (OPS) Restoration Struggle Committee' and a representative of the panel, while speaking to reporters in Panchkula, claimed that a few employees had suffered injuries during the police action.
"Restoration of OPS is a legitimate demand. Governments of Rajasthan, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh have restored it. The Haryana government has given an excuse that the government will go bankrupt if OPS is restored, which is not correct," the committee's representative said.
He said that an employee gives 25 to 30 years of service to a department. "Politicians have in the past also been getting pensions for multiple terms, so what are we demanding...," he said.

Tagging his tweet, Modi, in a tweet in Hindi, said, "We will leave no stone unturned to make life easier for the people of Ladakh."

Memphis authorities released video footage Friday showing Tyre Nichols being beaten by police officers who held the Black motorist down and repeatedly struck him with their fists, boots and batons as he screamed for his mother and pleaded, "I just want to go home."
The video is filled with violent moments showing the officers, who are also Black, chasing and pummeling Nichols and leaving him on the pavement propped against a squad car as they fist-bumped and celebrated their actions.
The footage emerged one day after the officers were charged with murder in Nichols' death.

BBC's documentary screened across Kerala; AK Antony's son voices displeasure

BBC's "India: The Modi Question" was screened in several parts of the state on Tuesday, prompting protest marches by the BJP's Yuva Morcha against the same.

The controversial BBC documentary on 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi helmed the western state was screened across Kerala on Tuesday by various political organisations including the pro-left Students Federation of India (SFI), as the BJP youth wing went up in arms protesting against the screening.
BBC's "India: The Modi Question" was screened in several parts of the state on Tuesday, prompting protest marches by the BJP's Yuva Morcha against the same.
However, support came in for the BJP from unexpected quarters as senior Congress leader and former Kerala CM AK Antony's son, Anil, voiced displeasure against the documentary.
Protest marches were taken out by Yuva Morcha to the Victoria College in Palakkad and Government Law College in Ernakulam where SFI followed through with its announcement to screen the documentary.
In both places, police intervened to remove the protestors and prevent any conflict.
More screenings are expected to take place in some colleges in Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram later Tuesday, a senior police officer said.
DYFI, the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M) in Kerala, said it will screen the documentary not just in the southern state, but across India.
It has to be shown to the public irrespective of the attempts by the Union government to hide it, V K Sanoj, state secretary of the DYFI told reporters.
He said there was nothing "anti-national" about screening the documentary as it has not been banned.
DYFI has no interest in creating any atmosphere of conflict in the state or the country, Sanoj added.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Antony's son Anil, in apparent support to BJP in the ongoing political storm in the state, said placing the views of the British broadcaster over Indian institutions would "undermine" the country's sovereignty.
