This story answers a simple question: can jogging help save the environment? It was in 2014, that a young Vivek had moved to Maharashtra&rsquo;s tech hub Pune for college. As he settled in the city leaving his sleepy town behind, a stark visual reality hit him. Pune&rsquo;s rivers were polluted in comparison to the clean water bodies in his hometown. This was enough for Vivek to embark on a journey to save the environment and his efforts started from being individualistic, grew to be local and eventually global.&nbsp; So, Vivek started cleaning the river front because that was the easiest thing he could do. But the young boy who was just 18 at that time soon realised that the cleaning needed a group effort. &nbsp; For this he started a special campaign called 'Pune Ploggers.' And it soon showed visible results.&nbsp; Vivek first used social media to invite like-minded people to jog and pick trash with him. The concept, popularly known as plogging, evolved in Sweden, and Vivek was able to gather young people from all over Pune. His campaign kept growing and now has 32 chapters across India. As &lsquo;Pune Ploggers&rsquo; &nbsp;completed 500 plogging drives in Pune, collecting over 2,000 tonnes of rubbish, Vivek&rsquo;s engineering studies took a backseat. He seized the opportunity to study Environmental Policy at The University of Bristol, earning a full scholarship. &nbsp;In Bristol, Vivek kept plogging and made new friends who joined his cause. Twelve nationalities are part of his group. His hard work paid off when he travelled to 30 cities in the UK in just 30 days. Vivek&rsquo;s global campaign gained recognition. He received &lsquo;Points of Light&rsquo; award from then British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and was also invited to share his story at 10 Downing Street by Johnson&rsquo;s successor Rishi Sunak. What sets &lsquo;Pune ploggers&rsquo; apart is their refusal to seek or accept financial donations. Vivek&rsquo;s goal is simple: he wants people to dedicate their weekends to picking up trash while jogging or walking, contributing to the environment in a tangible way. Back in India, Vivek&rsquo;s plogger-family grew bigger, and his work inspired over 20,000 volunteers worldwide. And ask them about their work; they say where there's a goal, there's always a way.

City police on Friday added section 308 of the IPC which pertains to `attempt to commit culpable homicide' against a man and a woman who performed a life-threatening stunt for creating a short video for social media.
In the `reel' or video which went viral on Thursday, the woman is seen hanging precariously, holding the man's hand, from the roof of a deserted building in Narhe area off Mumbai-Bengaluru highway.
The police took note of the video and registered a case against them under Indian Penal Code section 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others).
"An additional section, 308, has been invoked now," said an official of Bharti Vidyapeeth police station on Friday.
Both the accused are athletes, he said, adding that they were summoned to the police station and "served a notice with reprimand." Under section 308, a person can face imprisonment of up to three years.
Police on Friday also appealed to the people not to indulge in such perilous acts for the sake of fame.&nbsp;

A 31-year-old man was first shot in the head and then stabbed fatally at a restaurant in Pune, in what is suspected to be a fallout of a gang rivalry.
The incident took place on Saturday at 8 pm on Indapur bypass road, around 140 kilometres from Pune city.
A CCTV camera filmed the whole incident, showing two armed men approaching the deceased Avinash Balu Dhanve, a property dealer, from behind and firing bullets at close range. Others also joined the attackers and were seen attacking Dhanve with machetes. &nbsp;
&ldquo;The deceased was a criminal on police records with multiple cases, including attempted murder and those under Arms Act, registered against him in the past. He was recently released on bail in a case under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The murder seems premeditated, and we believe it is the fallout of a rivalry between two criminal groups, both of which are active in and around Alandi," Pankaj Deshmukh, Superintendent of Police for Pune Rural jurisdiction, said, according to Indian Express.
&ldquo;We have identified 10 suspects, including the man sitting in front of the deceased on the table. One more suspect seen in the footage is yet to be identified. An extensive probe has been launched to arrest the suspects,&rdquo; SP Deshmukh added.
The police said the gang of suspects arrived at the hotel minutes after Dhanve and three others reached there in his car. &ldquo;We have also recovered two firearms from Dhanve&rsquo;s car,&rdquo; said the police.

A 31-year-old man was been hacked to death after being shot at allegedly by eight people in Maharashtra's Pune district, police said on Sunday.
The police said that the victim has been identified as Avinash Dhanve a properly dealer who had multiple criminal cases against him.&nbsp;
The incident, which took place on Saturday night in Indapur area, seems to be the fallout of a gang rivalry, they said.
Dhanve was eating at a highway eatery near Pune when he was attacked.&nbsp;
"We have identified eight assailants through the CCTV footage and teams have been mobilised to apprehend them," the Pune police said
"Dhanve, who had multiple cases against him, was shot at and hacked to death," he said.
A previous enmity with a rival group seems to be the reason behind the killing, the official said, adding that an investigation is on into the incident.

A Pune man's video showing red larvae in the filter candle of a water purifier has raised concerns about the pollution in the city's Mula-Mutha river. A man named Jaideep Baphna posted a video and photo on X from a resident of Blueridge township in Pune's Hinjawadi on February 19.&nbsp;
In the viral video, tiny red larvae were visible on the filter candle. Jaideep wrote in his post that the red larvae are known as 'Chironomid larvae,' belonging to the Chironomidae family. They are commonly referred to as 'non-biting midges' in the adult stage and 'bloodworms' in the larval stage.
The man also mentioned in his post that if these 'mosquito cousins' have reached Wakad and Hinjewadi areas of the city then it means that the river is slowly losing its capacity to fight back.&nbsp;
Jaideep also claimed that at least 20% of the 800 flats in the township have found the red larvae in the tap water.
Jaideep slammed Pune Municipal Corporation and said that instead of cleaning the water, they are focused on 'useless concretization under Riverfront Development'.
Jaideep also mentioned that Pune had witnessed a tornado of mosquitoes over the river some days ago. The video of the same also went viral on the internet.
The post quickly went viral on social media. While some called it a serious issue and demanded quick action, others asked if the problem was because of the river or dirty water tanks.

While the incident -- during which the elderly woman suffered minor injuries -- took place in the Model Colony area of the city on February 25, it came to light after a video went viral.
Shivajinagar Police reached out to the woman on Thursday and registered a case against an unidentified chain snatcher under section 393 (attempt to commit robbery) of the Indian Penal Code, said an official.
Speaking to PTI, the woman's son-in-law said she and her two granddaughters were on their way to her daughter's house when the incident took place.
"While they were walking, a man on a scooter stopped on the pretext of asking for directions and tried to snatch the chain my mother-in-law was wearing. She started shouting and caught hold of his collar, and ten-year-old Juhi (name changed) started hitting him with a bag," he said.
"The man then fled from the spot as his attempt to snatch the chain was foiled," he said.
His mother-in-law fell during the scuffle and received bruises on her hands, he added.

"The office, located on the 11th floor of a multi-storey commercial building in Pune's Mundhwa area, received a call late Sunday night that a bomb was kept in the office premises," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Vikrant Deshmukh said.
After being alerted, Pune police and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad reached the spot and carried out extensive searches, he said.
"The call later turned out to be a hoax. The caller has been traced to Hyderabad and apprehended. He allegedly made the call in an inebriated condition," the official said.
Further investigation is on into the incident, he added.

A 27-year-old food stall owner in Maharashtra's Pune city was injured after he was attacked allegedly by his business rival who was miffed with his "free soup" offer to lure customers, police said on Thursday.
The incident took place on Monday in Khadaki area where the victim and the accused ran their food outlets, they said.
The victim - Mulayam Pal - introduced an offer of "free soup" before food in a bid to attract customers, an official from Khadaki police station said.
"According to the complaint filed by the victim, the scheme attracted customers, but it did not go down well with Siddharth Bhalerao and his partner Digvijay Kachare, who also operated an eatery next to Pal's. The accused used to have a verbal spat with Pal over this," he said.
On February 6, when the victim was having food at a snack centre near his stall, Bhalerao allegedly hit him on the head with a sharp weapon and Kachare threatened him and hurled abuses, the official said.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case against the two accused under Indian Penal Code Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and other relevant provisions, he said.

In a shocking incident, a woman was allegedly forced by her in-laws and husband to eat powdered human bones as a part of a black magic ritual advised by the local occultist to conceive a child.
Following a complaint by the woman, Pune Police on Wednesday registered an FIR or police case against seven people including the husband, in-laws and the occultist.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Suhail Sharma of Pune city Police, said, "Police have registered a case under sections 498 a, 323, 504, 506 of IPC along with section 3 of anti-superstition act (Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013) against seven persons."
The victim apparently registered a complaint with the police on separate matters. In the first matter, the victim alleged that her in-laws had demanded some dowry during the time of marriage (in 2019) which included some cash, gold and silver jewellery.
In the second matter, the police have imposed section 3 of anti-superstition and black magic, according to the complaint application. According to the police, in the second matter, during several Amavasya, the victim's in-laws forced her to indulge in some superstitious activities at home and in some other rituals the victim was forcefully taken to an unknown crematorium and asked to eat some bones of a dead human.&nbsp;

&nbsp;A 23-year-old male nurse at a hospital in Maharashtra's Pune district allegedly killed his wife by administering her lethal injections and tried to pass it off as a suicide, police said.
The accused, Swapnil Sawant, wanted to eliminate his wife as he was having an affair with a nurse who was his colleague at the private hospital and planning to marry her, an official from Paud police station on Wednesday said, adding that the man has been arrested.
Sawant married the victim, Priyanka Kshetre, five months ago and the couple lived in a rented house in Kasar Amboli village in Mulshi tehsil, the official said.
On November 14, Sawant took his wife to a hospital in a serious condition and she was declared dead by doctors, he said.
"A purported suicide note signed by Priyanka was found, and a case of domestic violence and abetment of suicide was registered against Sawant," said inspector Manoj Yadav.
But during investigation, it came to light that Sawant had stolen some drugs and injections including Vecuronium Bromide, Nitroglycerin injections and Lox 2% from the hospital where he worked, and allegedly killed his wife by administering them to her, he said.

A Pune boy has written to Apple CEO Tim Cook narrating how an Apple Watch saved his life.
Sharing the story of his accident via email, 17-year-old Smit Mehta told Cook about how he fell into a 150-feet deep valley in Lonavala during a trek with his friends in July this year.
Smit had no access to his phone when he fell, and he managed to escape only by using his apple watch, according to a report by The Times of India.&nbsp; He used the watch to connect with his family and friends, who later pulled him to safety, the report added.
The teen sustained injuries including broken ankle after he slipped into the valley.
Speaking to India Today, Smit said he was alive because of his cellular Apple Watch which helped him connect with his people at the right time.&nbsp;
&nbsp;Apple CEO Cook responded to Smit's email and thanked him for sharing his story, saying that he was glad to see him on the road to recovery.
