Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the ethnic violence-affected Manipur to give solace to the people.
Describing what has happened in Manipur as a "tremendous tragedy", Gandhi also said that Congress is ready to do everything it can to bring peace to the state.
Ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year claimed more than 200 lives in Manipur since May last year.
"The PM should have visited the state long back. It is important that he visit Manipur. I request him to come to Manipur and try and understand what is happening here. People of Manipur, probably people of the entire country, want the PM to visit the state and listen to the victims&rsquo; woes. It will comfort the people. Congress is ready to support anything that would improve the situation," the Raebareli MP told a press conference here.
During his day-long visit to Manipur, Gandhi visited several relief camps where people displaced by the ethnic violence in the northeastern state are staying.
&ldquo;This is the third time I come here since the problem started. It has been a tremendous tragedy. I was expecting some improvement in the situation. But I was quite disappointed to see that the situation is still nowhere near where it should be," he said.
Gandhi visited Manipur weeks after ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 last year. He also began his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' from the state in January 2024.
This is his first visit to Manipur after becoming the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and after the Congress won both Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Gandhi said he came to the state to listen to the woes of the violence-hit people and build confidence in them and as an opposition leader, he would pressure the government so that it acts.
"I want to tell all the people of Manipur (that) I came here as your brother, as somebody who wants to help you, wants to work with you to bring back peace in Manipur. I am ready to do whatever I can, Congress party is ready to do whatever it can to bring back peace here," he said.
Stating that he had never seen anywhere in India what is going on in Manipur, Gandhi asserted that violence and hatred are not going to get any solution, while respect and interaction can.
&ldquo;The state is completely split in two and it is a tragedy for everybody involved. The entire state is suffering. If we start to think about peace and affection, it will be a very very big step for Manipur," the Congress leader said.
The leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha said that whenever the people of Manipur want, he and his party will be available.
&ldquo;Indian government and everybody who considers himself a patriot must embrace the people of Manipur," said the Congress leader who also met Governor Anusuiya Uikey before holding the press conference.
"We expressed to the governor that we would like to help in whatever way we can. We also expressed our displeasure. We are not happy with the progress that has taken place here. I don&rsquo;t want to politicize the issue, it is not my intention," Gandhi said in the press conference.
The Congress leader did not take questions from the media people saying he has made his message clear.
"I am not ready to take questions that are designed to divert the issue," he said.&nbsp;

Security has been tightened in Manipur's Jiribam district ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's scheduled visit on Monday, with authorities imposing a ban on aerial photography using drones, officials said.
A notification by the Jiribam district magistrate on Sunday said as part of enhanced security measures, aerial photography or videography through drones, balloons, or any other means is strictly prohibited.
The notification emphasised that violations of this order would result in legal action under Section 223 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and other relevant provisions of the law.
In preparation for Gandhi's day-long visit to the violence-hit state, a team of state Congress leaders, including working president Victor Keishing and AICC Manipur in-charge Girish Chodankar, inspected relief camps where the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha is likely to visit.
Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra and other party functionaries have already left Imphal for Jiribam district to welcome their leader.
Earlier in the day, the state Congress leaders held discussions regarding Gandhi's visit to the violence-hit state. Meghachandra, Congress Legislature Party leader O Ibobi Singh, and two Congress MPs from the state, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kanngam Arthur, attended the meeting.
"Gandhi has chosen to visit Manipur at a time when peace is essential. We appreciate his decision to visit the state after assuming the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha," a Congress leader told PTI.
According to Meghachandra, Gandhi's itinerary involves flying from Delhi to Silchar, then proceeding to Jiribam district where fresh violence was reported on June 6. Gandhi plans to visit several relief camps in the district before returning to Silchar airport and flying to Imphal.
"After arriving in Imphal, he will travel to Churachandpur district to interact with residents in relief camps," Meghachandra said. Gandhi will then travel by road to Moirang in Bishnupur district to visit additional relief camps before returning to Imphal for a scheduled meeting with Governor Anusuiya Uikey.
"He will then depart from the state," Meghachandra said, highlighting that this visit marks Gandhi's first trip to Manipur since the Lok Sabha elections, during which the Congress secured victory in both constituencies of the ethnically troubled state.
O Ibobi Singh said, "Gandhi has visited the state twice since the outbreak of violence last year."

He was referring to a clash that broke out between members of both Congress and BJP outside the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, Congress's state headquarters in Paldi area of Ahmedabad on July 2 after BJP's youth wing members came there to protest against Gandhi's remarks on Hindus.
According to police, both sides engaged in stone-pelting, in which five policemen, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, were injured.
In his speech, the former Congress chief also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the BJP's defeat from the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, where Ayodhya is located.
"People of Ayodhya felt angry when they found that not a single local person was invited for the Ram Mandir's inauguration," he said.
He also claimed that PM Modi wanted to contest from Ayodhya, but his surveyors advised him against doing so saying he will be defeated and his political career will end.

Leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday said there were lapses on the part of the administration in the Hathras stampede incident that killed over 100 people, but added that he did not want to make it "political".
Gandhi also urged Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to release "maximum compensation" for the victims without any delay.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the victims of the stampede in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras here on Friday morning, Gandhi said, "It is a matter of grief that so many families have suffered, so many people lost their lives." "I don't want to speak from a political prism, but there have been some lapses on part of the administration. There have been mistakes, which should be identified," the senior Congress leader said.
A total of 121 people, mostly women, died in the stampede at self-styled godman Baba Bhole's satsang in Hathras on Tuesday.
Gandhi said this is a tough time for the victims and they would need the compensation quickly as they are poor. He urged the UP chief minister to provide "maximum compensation".
"They are poor people and they need it (compensation) now. If you give them after six months, after a year or delay it, then it will not benefit anyone. Compensation should be given as soon as possible," Gandhi said.
Rahul Gandhi also said that he had a "personal" interaction with the family members of the stampede victims.
"They said that there was a lapse on the part of the administration. They said that the police arrangement that should have been made was not there. But they are grieving and are in shock. I am trying to understand their situation," he said.
Before meeting family members in Hathras, Gandhi made a stop at Aligarh and met the kin of victims from the district.
Gandhi left from Delhi early morning by road and was accompanied by UP Congress chief Ajay Rai, state Congress in-charge Avinash Pande, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and other office bearers of the party during his visit to Aligarh and Hathras.
He reached Pilakhna village in Aligarh at 7.15 am and reached Vibhav Nagar colony's Green Park in Hathras at 9 am.
During his interaction with the families in Hathras, Gandhi was accompanied by Ajay Rai and district president Chandragupta Vikramaditya. He left Hathras around 9.30 am.
Hari Mohan, a Hathras resident who lost his aunt in the stampede, said, "Rahul Gandhi interacted with us and extended his sympathies. He said he would make an effort to get the compensation amount for victims increased," Mohan told PTI.
Mrityunjay Bharti (22), a resident of Aligah who lost her maternal grandmother in the tragedy, said: "He spoke to us and tried to understand our issues. He said he would raise the issue in Parliament so that such incidents do not happen in future." Security had been beefed up in Hathras since morning for Gandhi's arrival. A large number of police personnel were deployed on key city routes while multi-layered security rings were present at the venue at Vibhav Nagar colony.
The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday formed a three-member judicial commission headed by a retired high court judge to probe the Hathras tragedy and to look into the possibility of whether there was a "conspiracy" behind the stampede.&nbsp;

The senior Congress leader landed in Pilakhna village in Aligarh around 7.15 am after he left by road from Delhi. Later, Gandhi is scheduled to meet families of the stampede victims in Hathras's Vibhav Nagar area.
According to police, of the 121 people who died due to the stampede on July 2, 17 were from Aligarh and 19 were from Hathras.
"Rahul ji left for Hathras from Delhi at around 5.10 am (on Friday)," Rai told PTI.
Elaborating the senior Congress MP's schedule for the day, Rai said, "Rahul Gandhi will make a condolence visit to the family of the victims of the Hathras tragedy at Pilakhna in Aligarh. Later, he will meet the families of the victims at Green Park and Vibhav Nagar near Navipur Khurd in Hathras." Rai had on Thursday told PTI that Gandhi will meet the family members of the victims of the Hathras stampede tragedy, which claimed the lives of 121 people at a religious gathering.
He had blamed the Uttar Pradesh government for the incident.
"The incident of Hathras is a failure of the UP government... Yesterday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Hathras and later Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also went there. But they did not go together; this shows the infighting," Rai had said, while addressing the media at the state party headquarters here.
He had also reiterated the demand of the Congress for compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of those who were killed in the stampede and Rs 25 lakh to the injured.
"We also want a judicial inquiry into the incident to be conducted by a sitting judge of the high court, not a retired judge," Rai had said.

BJP Rajya Sabha member Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress has a history of insulting Hindus, as he cited former home ministers P Chidambaram and Sushil Kumar Shinde's alleged terrorism barbs for the religion.
Gandhi, he said, took his oath as an MP this time not in the name of God but "solemnly affirmed".

"We wanted to give a joint message to the students of India, on behalf of Opposition and Government - that we consider this an important issue. So, we thought that to respect students we will have discussion on NEET today, a dedicated discussion," Gandhi said in Lok Sabha.

It was a courtesy call during which Gandhi also raised the issue of Emergency being invoked by the Speaker in the House, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal told reporters after the meeting in Parliament House.
"It was a courtesy call. The Speaker declared Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of Opposition and after that he along with other INDIA alliance partner leaders met the Speaker," he said.
Asked whether Gandhi discussed the issue of Emergency being raised in the House, Venugopal said, "We discussed so many things about Parliament functioning. Of course, this issue also came up." "Rahul ji, as Leader of Opposition, informed the Speaker about this issue, and said it could have been avoided from the Speaker's reference. That is clearly a political reference, it could have been avoided," the Congress leader said.
Soon after his election as Lok Sabha Speaker, Birla had on Wednesday set off a firestorm by reading out a resolution condemning the imposition of Emergency as an attack on the Constitution by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi, an act that triggered vociferous protests by Congress member in the House.
Birla recalled that it was on June 26, 1975 that the country woke up to the cruel realities of Emergency, when the Congress government jailed opposition leaders, imposed many restrictions on the media and also curbed the autonomy of the Judiciary.
This is Gandhi's first meeting with the Speaker after he assumed charge as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
He was accompanied by SP's Dharmendra Yadav, DMK's Kanimozhi, Shiv Sena's (SP) Supriya Sule and TMC's Kalyan Banerjee, besides some others.&nbsp;

Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay and DMK leader T R Baalu on Wednesday congratulated Om Birla for being elected speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term and hoped he would be impartial towards the opposition.
Bandyopadhyay said the functioning of the House always depends on the attitude of the treasury benches and the House belongs to the opposition.
"It is my firm belief and so far parliamentary democratic practice is concerned, the House belongs to the opposition. This attitude needs to be adopted by the ruling party," he said.
He mentioned the suspension of opposition MPs in the 17th Lok Sabha and said it was "not desirable".
He also said while Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned several bills being passed, many were passed without any debate.
DMK's Baalu said that now that Birla is the Speaker, he does not belong to any party anymore.
"You might have been elected by my BJP friends (but) hereafter there is no politics between you and the powers. You don't have any colour also. You have to treat the opposition and the ruling party in the same manner. Kindly be impartial," he said.
