Shubman Gill solidifies his top spot in the ICC ODI rankings, increasing his lead over Babar Azam. Virat Kohli moves to fifth, while Keshav Maharaj and Matt Henry enter the top five bowlers.

India opener Shubman Gill on Wednesday (February 26, 2025) consolidated his position atop the ICC ODI Batting Rankings after playing a big role in his team's qualification for the semifinals of the Champions Trophy.
Gill, who scored a match-winning 101 not out against Bangladesh and 46 against Pakistan in Group A matches played in Dubai this past week, has gained 21 rating points and moved up to 817 rating points, increasing the gap with second-placed Babar Azam from 23 to 47 points.
Virat Kohli's unbeaten 100 against Pakistan has helped him overtake Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand to fifth position while K.L. Rahul has moved up two places to 15th position after notching an unbeaten 41 against Bangladesh.
New Zealand batters Will Young (up eight places to 14th) and Tom Latham (up 11 places to 30th) have moved up after scoring centuries against Pakistan while Rachin Ravindra's ton against Bangladesh has lifted him 18 places to 24th. Glenn Phillips is another Kiwi batter to gain, up 12 places to 28th position.
Australia duo of Alex Carey (up four places to 50th) and Josh Inglis (up 18 places to 81st), plus Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy (up 18 places to 64th) and Jaker Ali (up 64 places to 94th) have also moved up in the latest weekly rankings update that considers performances till Tuesday (February 25m 2025).
In the bowling rankings, Keshav Maharaj and Matt Henry break into the top five while Adam Zampa has moved into 10th position after picking up two wickets against England in their thrilling Group B match.

Shubman Gill&rsquo;s unbeaten 101 and Mohammed Shami&rsquo;s five-wicket haul led India to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy opener.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill was more artisan than artist en route to his eighth ODI hundred after Mohammed Shami&rsquo;s satisfying five-wicket haul, propelling India to a workmanlike six-wicket win over Bangladesh in their Champions Trophy opener here on Thursday.
Gill&rsquo;s unbeaten innings (101, 129b, 9&times;4. 2&times;6) had a mirror image in Bangladesh innings through Towhid Hridoy&rsquo;s 100 (118b) that lifted them to 228 from the depths of 35 for five after batting by choice.
But India negated various pressure points, including a sluggish surface, during their chase effectively through Gill&rsquo;s knock full of substance, and ended up at 231 for four in 46.3 overs.
It&rsquo;s also a nerve-settling victory for India ahead of their much-awaited clash against a more accomplished Pakistan at the same venue on February 23.
Gill, the world&rsquo;s No. 1 ODI batter, played a massive role in it, dishing out a century which was more remarkable for its restraint than the customary flair.
It was also a reflection of his growing stature as India&rsquo;s new generation batting star.
Chasing a modest 229, openers Rohit Sharma (41, 36b) and Gill gave India a rollicking start.
They added 69 runs in 9.5 overs before Rohit got out to pacer Taskin Ahmed while attempting a mighty heave, leaving India at 69 for 1.
The partnership was significant from a game point of view as the pitch slowed down considerably in the middle overs, making batting a tad tougher task.
Virat Kohli looked a bit over-watchful and circumspect before opening his account after facing 10 balls.
Though he grew comfortable, an uppish cut of leg-spinner Rishad Hossain ended his stay for 22.
The quick wickets of Axar Patel, who was once again promoted to No. 5, and Shreyas Iyer had India at a slightly worrying 144 for four.
But KL Rahul, who was dropped on nine by Jaker Ali off Taskin, ensured that there were no further hiccups and played a resolute unbeaten innings of 41 off 47 balls.
Gill and Rahul added 87 runs for the unbroken fifth wicket alliance to carry their side home.
Earlier, a cramping Hridoy, who made a courageous maiden ODI hundred and an equally gutsy Ali (68, 114b, 4&times;4) added 154 for a doughty sixth-wicket stand to give some respectability to Bangladesh total.

India also found another shining shard of positive in Shami&rsquo;s outing.
Shami also eased a lot of worries over the absence of injured pace ace Jasprit Bumrah with a five for 53 effort, and during the spell he also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets.
Hridoy&rsquo;s innings was an example of how to construct an innings yet maintain a healthy run-rate as he reached the milestone in just 114 balls.
He and Ali also showed excellent composure under pressure.
However, both the Bangladesh batters benefited from the largesse of Indian fielders, as Ali was dropped on zero off the first ball he faced off left-arm spinner Axar (2/43).
It also robbed Axar of a hat-trick after he dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim and Tanzid Hasan off successive deliveries.
Hridoy had the fortune when he was grassed by Hardik Pandya at mid-off off Kuldeep Yadav when he was on 23.
Rahul, who was sharp behind the stumps, floored a stumping chance to give the second reprieve for Hridoy.
But those moments of slip-ups should not take anything away from the way Indian bowlers, especially Shami, used the new ball on a rather slow but smooth pitch.
Shami, who had an average outing against England in T20I and ODI series recently at home, did not disappoint on the big stage and took the wicket of opener Soumya Sarkar in the first over itself.
He did not take much time to grab his second wicket when he ousted Mehdy Hasan Miraz &mdash; caught brilliantly by Shubman Gill in the slips.
The Bengal pacer later returned to break the determined stand between Hridoy and Ali, dismissing the latter.
He later took two more wickets, and now the 34-year-old is India&rsquo;s highest wicket taker in ICC tournaments, going past former pacer Zaheer Khan (59).
Harshit Rana (3/31) gave good backing to his senior partner.

Skipper Rohit Sharma showered praise on his deputy Shubman Gill and veteran pacer Mohammed Shami for coming up with game-changing performances against Bangladesh in India&rsquo;s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh here on Thursday.
Gill made an unbeaten hundred and Shami walked away with a five-wicket haul as India registered a six-wicket win over Bangladesh at the DICS.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ve been in that situation many times before and like I said many times (in the past), there&rsquo;s a lot of experience in that dressing room to handle that composure where it&rsquo;s needed and KL (Rahul) and (Shubman) Gill at the end were quite composed,&rdquo; Rohit said during the post-match presentation.
Rohit heaped praise on player of the match Gill.
&ldquo;Gill, we know the class that he has, he&rsquo;s been batting brilliantly of late and today what he showed us with the bat shouldn&rsquo;t surprise anyone,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;What was good to see that he was there till the end to make sure that he sees off the game,&rdquo; Rohit added.
Rohit also lauded Shami for his five-for that helped the pacer to complete 200 wickets in ODIs.
&ldquo;Yeah, very happy for him. (It has been a) long time waiting, we obviously know what he brings to us,&rdquo; Rohit said.
&ldquo;The quality that he has, the kind of match winner he is developing himself into for us, every time we throw the ball at him he&rsquo;s got something up his sleeves, which is always nice and we need guys like these to stand up in big moments,&rdquo; he added.
Rohit said India expect the pitch here at the Dubai International Stadium to remain slow for their next Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan on February 23.
&ldquo;Very hard to say that,&rdquo; Rohit replied when asked if his side thought the pitch behaved as per their expectations.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s just one game, very hard to make anything out of the track, but we knew there&rsquo;s not enough grass on the pitch and it is going to be on the slower side and that is exactly how the pitch played,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But again, you play (according to) the conditions. You try and think about what you want to do as a team and I thought we adapted to the conditions really well, to start with our bowling.&rdquo;
India were off to a brisk start but were forced to change their approach midway through the innings and Rohit admitted his side was &ldquo;under pressure&rdquo; chasing 229.
&ldquo;With the bat as well, yes, we were under pressure a little bit. But when you&rsquo;re playing a game like this, (in the) Champions Trophy (against a) quality team, you&rsquo;re bound to be under pressure and that is where the experience comes into play,&rdquo; he said.
The Mumbaikar said he was not happy with the dropped catch of Jaker Ali (68) which denied Axar Patel a hat-trick.
&ldquo;May take him for dinner tomorrow,&rdquo; he quipped.
&ldquo;It was an easy catch. I should have taken that catch, the standard that I have set for myself, standing in the first slip, that was a little disappointing, but these things happen,&rdquo; Rohit added.
&ldquo;But again, the way these guys bowled that set the game for us to be honest, I know they were 36 for five and then they got a big partnership.&rdquo;
&ldquo;These things are bound to happen, there will be partnerships, credit to (Towhid) Hridoy and Jaker Ali, they played brilliantly to stitch that big partnership,&rdquo; he said.
Gill termed his 101 not out as &ldquo;one of the most satisfying innings&rdquo; for himself
&ldquo;Definitely (it was) one of my most satisfying innings that I&rsquo;ve played and my first century in an ICC event so very satisfying and very happy with the way I performed,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;When myself and Rohit bhai went out there, cutting the ball wasn&rsquo;t that easy because the balls outside the off (stump) weren&rsquo;t coming onto the bat. So I thought of using my feet to even the fast bowlers when I&rsquo;m trying to go over the circle,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;When the when the spinners came on me and Virat bhai were talking about in the middle that it&rsquo;s not easy to score signals off the front foot,&rdquo; he added.
Gill said he was asked to finish off the match. &ldquo;At one point there was a bit of pressure on us and the message was sent from outside (that) I have to try to be at the end and that&rsquo;s what I tried to do,&rdquo; he said.

India&rsquo;s Shubman Gill dethrones Babar Azam to reclaim the No.1 spot in ICC ODI rankings, while Sri Lanka&rsquo;s Maheesh Theekshana tops the bowling charts ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.

India vice-captain Shubman Gill on Wednesday dethroned Babar Azam of Pakistan from the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI Rankings for batters on the back of his strong show against England in the recent home series.&nbsp;
The ICC issued the latest rankings just ahead of the start of the eight-team Champions Trophy in Karachi with the match between Pakistan and New Zealand.&nbsp;
&ldquo;India right-hander Shubman Gill overtakes former Pakistan captain Babar Azam to become the top ranked ODI batter in the world,&rdquo; the ICC said.&nbsp;
Gill, who scored two fifties and a century in the recent three-match ODI series against England at home which India won 3-0, jumped one place to the No. 1 spot. He now has 796 rating points compared to Babar&rsquo;s 773.&nbsp;
India skipper Rohit Sharma is placed at the third spot with 761 points followed by South Africa&rsquo;s Henrich Klaasen and New Zealand&rsquo;s Daryl Mitchell at fourth and fifth respectively.&nbsp;
&ldquo;It's a major shake-up at the top of the rankings just prior to the start of the Champions Trophy and leaves an interesting sub-plot to what will transpire over the coming weeks during the eight-team tournament in Pakistan and Dubai,&rdquo; the ICC said.&nbsp;
&ldquo;This is the second time Gill has held the No.1 ranking in ODI cricket, with the India batter having also gone past Babar to claim top spot midway through the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Gill has been in excellent form of late, with his century against England in Ahmedabad during the third ODI of the recently concluded series enough to catapult the 25-year-old to the top of the rankings,&rdquo; the global governing body added.&nbsp;
Sri Lanka&rsquo;s Maheesh Theekshana, meanwhile, has taken the first position in the ODI rankings for bowlers as he replaced Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan.&nbsp;
&ldquo;While Sri Lanka won't be featuring at the Champions Trophy, Theekshana earned the top spot following his exploits against the Aussies that included an excellent four-wicket haul in the opening match of that series in Colombo,&rdquo; the ICC said.&nbsp;
Sri Lanka had recently handed a 2-0 whitewash to Australia with Theekshana taking four wickets. The Sri Lankan spinner has 680 rating points, followed by Rashid at second, Namibia&rsquo;s Bernard Scholtz at third, India&rsquo;s Kuldeep Yadav at fourth and Pakistan&rsquo;s Shaheen Shah Afridi at fifth.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Meanwhile, Afghan spin wizard Rashid drops to second and will be keen to regain the No.1 spot as he trails his Sri Lankan counterpart by just 11 rating points,&rdquo; the ICC said.&nbsp;
&ldquo;While a trio of spinners in India's squad Kuldeep Yadav (up one place to fourth), South Africa's Keshav Maharaj (re-enters the rankings in sixth) and New Zealand's Mitchell Santner (up four rungs to seventh) are all inside the top 10 after making ground this week."&nbsp;
Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi remains the top ranked all-rounder in ODIs, followed by Sikandar Raza, Azmatullah Omarzai, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Rashid.

Shubman Gill led the way with a fluent 112 while Virat Kohli (52) and Shreyas Iyer (78) also cashed in on ideal conditions in their last outing before the Champions Trophy, helping India set a 357-run target against England in third and final match in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.&nbsp;
Gill anchored India's innings en route to his seventh ODI ton &mdash; 112 off 104 balls (14x4s, 3x6s) which also took his average past 60 in the format &mdash; while putting on two century stands with Kohli and Iyer to consolidate for India, who finished at 356 all-out.&nbsp;
The India vice-captain Gill also achieved the unique feat of scoring a century each across the three international formats at the same venue. Gill, meanwhile, has also scored an IPL hundred here at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Attacking the fast bowlers and spinners alike, Gill's knock was replete with rich strokes particularly down the ground. The opener displayed immaculate footwork at the crease early on to take the attack to the opposition and remained resolute to score off spin, until he was cleaned up by Adil Rashid (4/64).&nbsp;
On his part, Kohli took his time to find the rhythm and when he did, the batting mainstay looked hitting his strides. Kohli made the most of a juicy overpitched delivery from Mark Wood which he drove through the covers for his first four, then got on top of the ball from Saqib Mahmood to swat it for another boundary through mid-wicket and punished the England pacer for being wayward as he cut him for his third four.
While his stroke play was compelling in the run-a-ball fifty for his 73rd half-century, there were elements of struggle against England leg-spinner Adil Rashid. When Kohli was on 38, he survived a leg-before appeal as an attempted flick was missed and the ball had crashed into his pads.&nbsp;
The replays showed the ball had pitched just outside the line of leg-stump. But Rashid continued to have wood over Kohli as soon after he raised his bat for fifty, the England spinner had him caught behind on a loopy delivery which turned away and took an edge before settling in the wicketkeeper&rsquo;s gloves.&nbsp;
This was the fifth time Rashid has dismissed Kohli in ODIs. Kohli was stranded 37 runs short of becoming only the third batter ever to make 14,000 ODI runs, missing a personal landmark like his teammate Rohit Sharma earlier in the innings. It is expected to be completed during Champions Trophy.&nbsp;
Coming off a terrific century in second ODI, Rohit Sharma (1) could not even get a start as a delivery from Wood which was angled in, straightened enough to take the outside edge and Phil Salt collected a sharp catch.&nbsp;
Iyer only had himself to blame for missing out on a triple-digit score after he was caught behind on a delivery fired down the leg stump by Rashid, one that he needlessly chased and edged. Hardik Pandya (17) hit a couple of sixes before perishing off Rashid and KL Rahul also stroked his way to a quick 29-ball 40 towards the end.

Despite the BCCI mandating contracted players' participation, the India stars struggled to make an impact, with performances falling short ahead of the Champions Trophy.

India's star players, including Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill, made a high-profile return to the Ranji Trophy, but their comebacks were short-lived, as all three fell cheaply during the penultimate round of the premier red-ball competition on Thursday.
Rohit, back in action after a challenging run in Australia, was looking to find some rhythm ahead of the Champions Trophy. However, his return to the Ranji Trophy was underwhelming as he was dismissed for just 3 runs in Mumbai's first innings against Jammu and Kashmir. Rohit attempted his signature pull shot off Umar Nazir, only to edge it to J&amp;K skipper Paras Dogra at mid-off. His opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal, also had a tough time, getting out for just 4 runs, trapped in front by Auqib Nabi, who exploited the fresh wicket well to produce some movement off the surface at the BKC Ground.
Shreyas Iyer, named in the Champions Trophy squad, could only manage 11 runs before being dismissed at mid-on off pacer Yudhvir Singh.
Meanwhile, in Rajkot, Pant made his first-class appearance for Delhi since the 2017-18 season but was dismissed for just 1 run off 10 balls by Saurashtra's Dharmendrasingh Jadeja, with India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also featuring for Saurashtra.
In Bengaluru, Shubman Gill didn't last long either, getting caught behind for just 4 runs in the match between Punjab and Karnataka, falling to Abhilash Shetty in the fourth over.
The big names made themselves available for the Ranji Trophy after the BCCI mandated participation for contracted players in domestic cricket, following India's series loss to Australia. It was his side's second over-rate offence of the season, and subsequently, the rest of the playing 11 members, including the Impact Player, were individually fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.
On Friday, GT defeated defending champions CSK by 35 runs to stay alive in the IPL.
Gill and B Sai Sudharsan made hundreds in GT's total of 231 for three before restricting CSK to 196 for eight.
The Titans are now eighth on the points table with 10 points from 12 matches, and CSK held on to their fourth place despite the defeat with 12 points from as many games.

The 24-year-old, who scored 890 runs during IPL 2023 and is among the top-10 batters in the current list believes that if he is "picked" it will be another chance for him to take a shot at glory.
If he is not picked, then he will wish the selected 15 the very best from the bottom of his heart.
&ldquo;Playing for India is the biggest thing. But if I start thinking about the World Cup, then I will be doing injustice to my current team (GT) and myself.
&ldquo;If I have to be picked for the T20 World Cup, I will be picked. But right now, my focus is on IPL and how to get the best out of my team and perform the best for my team which also helps my players,&rdquo; Gill told PTI in an interview.
For any player appearing in a World Cup is a dream, but Gill is learning the art of controlling the controllables.
&ldquo;Obviously as a player, I want to be there and play the World Cup and get that opportunity to represent my country at the highest level &ndash; the biggest stage of T20 cricket.
&ldquo;Having played in a World Cup last year, I have had my share of experiences, and it would be great to be able to play another World Cup. But I am not thinking that far ahead,&rdquo; he added.
But he didn't forget to mention &ndash; ever so subtly &ndash; that he has a body of performance built over two seasons.
&ldquo;I have scored almost 900 runs last season and if I had to be picked, I will be picked if not (then) best of luck to those who are picked,&rdquo; Gill said.
Captaining Titans is Gill's first tryst with leadership and perhaps through its prism, he is also learning more about 'Shubman-The Human'.
&ldquo;It's now exactly one month and its (captaincy) been good for me. I have learnt a lot of new things about myself, and about the team, which has been very interesting so far,&rdquo; he said.
When asked to elaborate, he spoke about how trust is a two-way street built on shared vulnerabilities of the leader and his contingent.
&ldquo;When you are just a player you are just thinking in terms of how you can help the team in terms of batting and fielding but when you are the captain, you also need to find a way to get the best out of players.
&ldquo;I need to gain their trust in order to get the best out of them, I need to show my vulnerability so that they can show theirs and you are always thinking more about others than yourself. You become more giving, feel good about yourself," he said.
It is not always easy to lead a side after two fantastic seasons where the team played back-to-back finals under Hardik Pandya, winning the inaugural season in 2022 and finishing second best last year.
So, does it become difficult to create his own footprints in a space created by Hardik and how does head coach Ashish Nehra help him ease into the role? His answer was an interesting one.

The unassuming Kane Williamson says he will be happy to help his Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill in any way he can as he considers the Indian a "great thinker".

With the IPL season set to roll on Friday, one captain who has 100 Tests under his belt is willing and ready to mentor a newbie captain who will be taking over a leadership role for the first time.
The unassuming Kane Williamson says he will be happy to help his Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill in any way he can as he considers the Indian a "great thinker", a huge compliment coming from someone who is a bonafide legend in international cricket.
"He (Gill) is a great player and like I said a great cricketing brain, and I would certainly encourage him to walk that path and take his decisions. No doubt what he will look to do the same," Williamson told PTI in an interview.
The 24-year-old Gill was handed Gujarat Titans' reins after incumbent Hardik Pandya made an abrupt exit from the franchise for his former team and spiritual base Mumbai Indians.
The dashing right-hander only recently recovered from a poor run of form when he came good in the home Test series against England, hitting two hundreds in the series.
He is set to explore the unchartered territory of captaincy in the IPL and Williamson promises to lend a helping hand whenever Gill needs it.
"I will be more than happy to help Shubman in any way I can and Shubman knows that," said Williamson.
The Titans have had a couple of great IPL seasons in 2022 and 2023. They won the title in 2022 and lost to Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball thriller the next year.
Williamson said that the youngster, who is widely regarded as the next Indian batting superstar, has the calibre to navigate his way through choppy waters.
"As for the team and myself, I would generally like to share some ideas. It is a long season ahead. It will be quite a journey and we will all be learning through it," said the veteran, who captained New Zealand to 22 wins in 40 Tests.
With no Mohammed Shami available due to recuperation from heel surgery, it won't exactly be a walk in the park for Gill but Williamson said such challenges are a routine for any captain.
"Obviously, there has been a few changes in the camp, that's a challenge for every team as every year you have some adjustments to make, really exciting opportunity for Shubman and we need to focus what's there in front of us," he said.
The support staff comprising head coach Ashish Nehra, Cricket Director Vikram Solanki and Mentor Gary Kirsten are also there to help Gill ease into his role.
As far as his own batting position is concerned, Williamson hinted that it would be his usual No. 3 slot.
"I think it will be a top order option. There are so many quality players, whether that's local Indian players, who have been exceptional or the overseas ones. So, it will come down to balance and I think a top order option," he said.
Williamson quite liked the idea of bowlers being allowed two bouncers per over from this IPL as he feels it will ensure a more balanced contest.
"I think it is a good addition and it will bring a slightly different dynamic to the game. It is a nice extra option for the fast bowlers," said Williamson.
However, on smaller grounds, the rule might just aid the batters.
"There could be smaller grounds around country and some very good surfaces which offer some high scores. Also addition of Impact Players, weighed more towards the runs side of the things. So, it is a nice addition and will play a role for sure."
In the middle of last year, Williamson had a horrifying knee injury which required Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction and since his comeback, he is just happy to play the game he has always loved.
So, is there anything left to achieve for a man who has played 100 Tests, notched up 32 tons in the traditional format, won a World Test Championship title, and has been a part of the greatest ODI World Cup final? He paused and smiled.
"It is an interesting question. It is about having to remind yourself that you love this game as well. There's always more of those tournaments and more of those things.
"So just kind of trying to stand alone and appreciate where you are after having an injury, coming back. Just being grateful to be back playing and doing your bit for the team, whatever team that is," he said.
But he has the grace and humility to accept reality as well.
"Perhaps I am slightly closer to the end than start and but you know it is a journey that you look back upon and appreciate.
The only time he struggled to answer a question was when asked what makes him the most loved cricketer in the game?
"I think just kind of you to say that. I play for a team (New Zealand) and may be who I am. From a cricketing perspective, trying to commit to what that group is trying to do," he signed off.

Rohit and Gill, who were batting on 52 and 26 overnight, gave themselves an over each after start of play before going for their strokes.
Off-spinner Bashir opened the bowling alongside veteran pacer James Anderson and was put under immense pressure by Rohit, who deposited him for a straight six and a four in his second over to set the tone.
Gill, who played some audacious strokes on the opening day, carried on in the same vein as he took two steps forward against the great Anderson for a straight six, which was followed by a square cut.
The only real chance that England had in the session went begging when Zak Crawley could not latch on to a sharp catch offered by Rohit at leg-slip.

Despite displaying promising form, Gill's innings was cut short by the seasoned campaigner James Anderson, who claimed the wicket merely 10 minutes before the lunch break. The 24-year-old batter's struggle for significant scores in Test cricket continues, with a meager high score of 36 in his last 12 Test innings.
Gill's battle against Anderson, known for its challenges, took a familiar turn as he attempted to drive a delivery on the flat Vizag track. The experienced Anderson outwitted him, inducing a catch brilliantly taken by wicketkeeper Ben Foakes, sending Gill back to the pavilion. This marked the fifth instance in just seven innings that Gill found himself dismissed by the wily Anderson.

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan doesn't want either Shubman Gill or Shreyas Iyer to be dropped from the Indian playing XI for the second Test against England as he feels their experience is crucial in the absence of senior players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.
Both Gill (23, 0) and Iyer (35, 13) struggled against the English spinners in the first Test in Hyderabad, which India lost by 28 runs to trail 0-1 in the five-match series.
But with Kohli, Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja not playing the second Test, beginning in Visakhapatnam on Friday, Pathan doesn't believe the Indian team management will take the risk of including young Sarfaraz Khan in the playing eleven.
"A senior player like Virat Kohli's absence is a massive factor. Over that KL Rahul is also injured. So the team management has plenty to think about. They need to think whether to give a chance to a new player straight away or wait a bit," Pathan said on the sidelines of the launch of Asian Legends League.
"There is no doubt that these two boys (Gill and Iyer) haven't performed for quite some time now but it's not that they have never performed." In case the team management decides to include a new batter, the toss-up will be between Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz, who has scored tons of runs in domestic cricket.
"Obviously, there are two new players in the squad -- Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz. But the Indian team management doesn't have Virat Kohli's service at the moment, so it will be difficult for the team management to blood in a new player straightaway. They would want to back experience," Pathan explained.
"So it's a big challenge but looking at the scenario, they might be now thinking of going with experience. Shreyas and Shubman have been there for quite some time now and have experience, which comes into play in crunch situations.
"I feel the team management will back them because 2-3 experienced players are not there in the team," the former bowling all-rounder added.
In case one between Patidar and Sarfaraz is picked, Pathan's vote is with the former as he made the squad before the prolific Mumbai 'Run Machine'.
Pathan, however, doesn't want to press the panic button after loss in the series opener and backed India to win the five-match rubber.
"We lost just one match but that doesn't mean our bowlers are not good. I knew we would lose one or two matches but it is good because there is plenty of learning from defeat. I hope we win the series and I still feel India will win the series. The series is not over yet," he said.
"I was really shocked that we lost but I am still hopeful that we will make a comeback." He also came in support of skipper Rohit Sharma, who faced some flak for his decisions in the opening Test.
"Rohit Sharma is a good captain. Yes, he made some mistakes in the last match but hope he will do everything to make a comeback in the series." The Asian Legends League is a five-team tournament is set to be held across Asian countries from March 13 to 21.
Former India pacer Chetan Sharma is the commissioner of the league, which has Indian Royals, Sri Lankan Lions, Afghanistan Pathan, Bangladesh Tiger and Pakistan Stars as the competing teams.
