Another year, another major tournament is right upon us. South Africa will begin their long-drawn quest for a major global trophy, one that has eluded them for over a quarter of a century. Such has been their plight that the tag &lsquo;perennial chokers&rsquo; is synonymous with the Proteas.
This time though, they will be led by Aiden Markram, who has tasted success at the youth level when he led his nation to the U-19 World Cup title a decade ago.
South Africa undoubtedly possess one of the strongest squads in world cricket with the experiences of Quinton de Kock, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and Reeza Hendricks on the batting front.
Their bowling department too boast of some explosive pace in Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, and Gerald Coetzee with spin support from Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Bjorn Fortuin.
However, they appear to be lacking in the all-rounder department and have only one in Marco Jansen, who excels more with the leather than the willow.
South Africa is coming into the tournament having not won a bilateral T20I series since August 2022. They are also among the only major nations to have never reached the final of the tournament; having twice suffered semi-final exits (2009 &amp; 2014).

After 30 years of dominating South African politics, the ruling African National Congress will face its toughest election this month as most opinion polls predict it will lose its parliamentary majority for the first time.
President Cyril Ramaphosa hopes the May 29 ballot will lead to his reelection. But if the ANC does lose its majority, it will force it into a coalition to form a government &mdash; also a first for the country and something that may complicate policymaking in Africa's most advanced economy.
"Here we have again in 2024, in the middle of an election season, this MK (Jacob Zuma's party) breakaway. And I think that has put the ANC under a lot more pressure, because it's a lot harder for them to know exactly where the chips will fall," said political analyst Tessa Dooms.
Ramaphosa was a senior figure in the ANC in the early 1990s and was once seen as a protege of Mandela. He left politics to become a successful businessman before returning as deputy president of South Africa in 2014. He became president in 2018 after Jacob Zuma resigned under a cloud of corruption allegations.
Ramaphosa has tried to rebuild the reputation of the ANC by cracking down on government graft. However, unemployment has risen to 32% during his presidency &mdash; the highest in the world &mdash; while he has struggled to curb poverty.

It badly damaged the economy and Ramaphosa's reputation as someone who could fix South Africa's problems, even if the blackouts are viewed as a result of mismanagement during the Zuma administration.
The ANC is still expected to win the largest share of votes, but if it receives less than 50% as predicted, it will need the help of coalition partners to reelect the 71-year-old Ramaphosa.
John Steenhuisen is the leader of the main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance.
"What we know about him is that, he's definitely a career politician in it for the long haul. But, whether or not he is, you know, going to be able to have the kind of mass appeal is the big question of this election," said Dooms.
The centrist DA has promised to &ldquo;rescue&rdquo; South Africa from what it says is the corruption and mismanagement of the ANC but has never come close to winning a national election. The DA won 22% in the last general election in 2019 to the ANC's 62%.
The DA entered a pre-election agreement with smaller opposition parties, hoping their combined vote might clinch a majority and remove the ANC. But they would all have to increase their share significantly and it's seen as unlikely.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has risen rapidly to become South Africa's third biggest party in Parliament since it was formed in 2013 by Julius Malema, a former ANC youth leader who was expelled from the ruling party.
His fiery, far-left rhetoric has made the 43-year-old South Africa's most contentious politician but his message that the ANC has failed poor, Black South Africans has gained traction, especially with unemployed and disaffected young people.
Dooms said that this election has seen a more subdued Malema.
"The kind of gusto and bravado that we've seen from Malema before is not quite what we've seen in this election. There's been a lot more kind of a measured sense of Julius Malema showing up and a lot more community," added Dooms.
The EFF has called for the nationalisation of mines and the redistribution of land to poor Blacks.
Former President Zuma added a new dimension when he announced in December that he was turning his back on the ANC he once led and returning to politics with a new party.
Zuma's MK Party is not expected to challenge the top three, but it is expected to further erode the ANC's vote just as the ruling party faces its sternest election test. The 81-year-old former leader still commands support, especially in his home KwaZulu-Natal province.
"Jacob Zuma has probably been one of the most strategic politicians we've seen in the country. And his political acumen cannot be overstated," Dooms said.
His reemergence also raised security concerns for the election after his conviction for contempt of court and prison sentence in 2021 sparked a week of rioting and looting that led to the deaths of more than 350 people in the worst violence in South Africa since the troublesome last days of apartheid.

The 2027 World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia across October and November.

The 2027 World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia across October and November.
Cricket South Africa's (CSA) chief executive officer, Pholetsi Moseki said the venues were decided keeping in mind the availability of hotel rooms and airport.
"The exercise (of choosing the venues) was a scientific one and also included the number of hotel rooms and the availability of an airport. If there was disappointment, it was also tempered by the reality that was based on the venues that were chosen," Moseki was quoted as saying by the South African website.
Moseki further stated that it was hard for them to leave out the three venues in Benoni, JB Marks Oval and Diamond Oval.
"We do indeed have 11 ICC-accredited venues, so it was hard to leave out three, but a whole lot of things were taken into consideration. There's also the important matter of training venues outside of the ones available at the venue."
While the main venues will be the Wanderers, Centurion Park in Pretoria, Kingsmead, St George's Park in Gqeberha, Boland Park in Paarl and Newlands, the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein and Buffalo Park in East London will also host some fixtures, with other games being staged in tournament co-hosts Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have directly qualified for the tournament, but Namibia will have to go through the African qualifiers.
The top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings gain direct qualification, while the remaining four spots will be determined through global qualifier tournaments.
The tournament will see two groups of seven teams each. The top three teams from each group will progress to the Super Six stage, leading to semi-finals and a final to determine the winners.
Teams will play each other once in the group stage, like in the 2003 World Cup.

It was a tragic reminder of how deadly South Africa's roads become during the Easter period, when millions crisscross the country during the long holiday weekend. Authorities repeatedly warn motorists of the danger and had issued multiple messages urging caution just a day before Thursday's horrific crash.
The girl somehow survived after the bus carrying worshippers from neighbouring Botswana careened off the bridge and caught fire as it hit the rocks below, according to authorities.
The girl was in a stable condition in the hospital after being admitted with serious injuries and was "in safe hands&rdquo;, an official with the local health department said Friday. Details of her injuries were not released.
Forensic investigators retrieved what they believed were 34 of the 45 bodies but couldn't be certain of the exact number, reflecting the gruesome nature of the crash. Many of the victims trapped inside the bus were burned beyond recognition, authorities said.
Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, an official with the Limpopo provincial health department, said only nine of the bodies recovered were likely to be identifiable.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the victims, who appeared to all be from Botswana, were on their way to the rustic town of Moria in Limpopo province for the Easter weekend pilgrimage that attracts hundreds of thousands followers of the Zion Christian Church.
The church has its headquarters in Moria and it was the first time the full pilgrimage was being held since the COVID-19 pandemic. Worshippers flocked to the small town which features a giant star &mdash; the church's emblem &mdash; and the words &ldquo;Zion City Moria&rdquo; painted in white on a hillside.
The church was formed in South Africa in the early 1900s as a Christian denomination that also retains some African traditions. It has an estimated 7 million followers across the southern African region.
Ramathuba said South African authorities had asked church leaders from Botswana to come and help identify the victims.
Good Friday and Easter Monday are national holidays in South Africa and many of its neighbours, when millions travel into, out of and across the nation. For some South Africans, it's a chance to return to their home towns and villages from jobs in the cities. Migrants also travel back to their home countries to see family. Some, like the pilgrims that died on Thursday, make religious trips.
Road travel can be treacherous; South Africa's Road Traffic Management Corporation reported that 252 people died in road crashes between Holy Thursday and Easter Monday last year.
Authorities said it appeared the bus driver lost control and the vehicle slammed into the barriers along the side of the bridge and then went over the edge. The driver was among the dead.
South African Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga was in Limpopo province attending a road safety campaign when she was informed of the &ldquo;devastating news&rdquo; of the crash, according to the national Department of Traffic.
Ramathuba said she had been at an Easter prayer meeting when she was called to the crash scene on the Mmamatlakala bridge near the town of Mokopane, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the South African capital, Pretoria.
&ldquo;I attended the scene of the accident, but now our focus as the health department is on the brave little survivor. She is in safe hands in a hospital with experts looking after her,&rdquo; Ramathuba told reporters. She declined to give details of the child's injuries, but authorities released a photograph of the child lying in a hospital bed and being examined by a doctor.
Ramathuba also declined to say if the child's parents or other family members were on the bus, saying authorities needed time to trace and inform families of the dead, who were mostly in Botswana.
Meanwhile, forensic investigators worked through the wreckage amid the rocks and steep cliffs. At least 11 bodies were believed still inside what was left of the charred bus, which was almost crushed flat.
&ldquo;We were at the scene,&rdquo; said local resident Simone Mayema, who said he was one of the first to arrive after the crash. &ldquo;We tried to help (but) there was nothing we could do because there was flames.&rdquo;

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius was released from prison on parole on Friday, more than a decade after he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in a Valentine's Day killing that shattered the reputation of a sports superstar.
Television crews, photographers and news reporters gathered outside the gates of the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in the South African capital of Pretoria before 6 a.m., waiting to catch a glimpse of the world-famous double-amputee Olympic runner.
Department of Corrections officials have said that Pistorius will not be &ldquo;paraded,&rdquo; indicating they will attempt to keep him away from the media glare that has trailed him since he shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet door at his home in the predawn hours of Feb. 14, 2013.
Pistorius, 37, will be transported from the prison to a corrections department office to be processed before he is officially released on parole. He is expected to initially live at his uncle's mansion in the upscale Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof, where he lived during his murder trial and where he was held on house arrest for a period in 2015-2016.
Bright yellow traffic barriers have been placed across a road leading to his uncle's house, possibly in preparation for Pistorius' arrival.
Pistorius was approved for parole in November, the second time he had applied. He has served nearly nine years of his 13 years and five months murder sentence for the killing of Steenkamp. Serious offenders in South Africa are eligible for parole after serving at least half of their sentence.
Steenkamp's mother, June Steenkamp, said in a statement that she had accepted Pistorius' parole as part of South African law.
&ldquo;Has there been justice for Reeva? Has Oscar served enough time? There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back, and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back," June Steenkamp said. "We who remain behind are the ones serving a life sentence.&rdquo; &ldquo;With the release of Oscar Pistorius on parole, my only desire is that I will be allowed to live my last years in peace with my focus remaining on the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation, to continue Reeva's legacy.&rdquo; Pistorius will live under strict conditions until the remainder of his sentence expires in December 2029, the Department of Corrections said. It emphasized that the multiple Paralympic champion's release &mdash; like every other offender on parole &mdash; does not mean that he has served his time.
Some of Pistorius' parole conditions include restrictions on when he's allowed to leave his home, a ban on consuming alcohol, and orders that he must attend programs on anger management and on violence against women. He will have to perform community service.
Pistorius will also have to regularly meet with parole officials at his home and at correctional services offices and will be subjected to unannounced visits by authorities. He is not allowed to leave the Waterkloof district without permission and is banned from speaking to the media until the end of his sentence. He could be sent back to jail if he is in breach of any of his parole conditions.
South Africa does not use tags or bracelets on paroled offenders so Pistorius will not wear any monitoring device, Department of Corrections officials said. But he will be constantly monitored by a department official and will have to inform the official of any major changes in his life, such as if he wants to get a job or move to another house.
Pistorius has maintained that he shot Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and law graduate, by mistake. He testified that he believed Steenkamp was a dangerous intruder hiding in his bathroom and shot through the door with his licensed 9 mm pistol in self-defense.
Prosecutors said he killed his girlfriend intentionally during a late-night argument.
Steenkamp's family did not oppose his parole application in November, although June Steenkamp said in a victim statement submitted to the parole board that she didn't believe Pistorius had been fully rehabilitated and was still lying about the killing.
Before the killing, Pistorius was held up as an inspiring role model after having had both of his legs amputated below the knee as a baby because of a congenital condition. He became a champion sprinter on his carbon-fiber running blades and made history by competing at the 2012 London Olympics.
But his murder trial destroyed his image. He was accused of being prone to angry outbursts and acting recklessly with guns, while witnesses testified about various altercations he had with others, including an argument in which he allegedly threatened to break a man's legs.
Pistorius was first convicted of culpable homicide &mdash; a charge comparable to manslaughter &mdash; and sentenced to five years in prison for killing Steenkamp. After appeals by prosecutors, he was ultimately found guilty of murder and had his sentence increased, although that judgment by the Supreme Court of Appeal still didn't definitively rule that he knew it was Steenkamp behind the toilet door.
Pistorius was first sent to prison in 2014, was released on house arrest in 2015 during an appeal and was sent back to prison in 2016. He was initially incarcerated at the maximum security Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in Pretoria but was moved to Atteridgeville early in his sentence because it is better suited to holding disabled prisoners.
Reaction to Pistorius' parole has been muted in South Africa, a stark contrast to the first days and months after Steenkamp's killing, which sparked angry protests outside of Pistorius' court hearings calling for him to receive a long prison sentence. There is no death penalty in South Africa.
&ldquo;He has ticked all the necessary boxes,&rdquo; said Themba Masango, secretary general of Not In My Name International, a group that campaigns against violence against women. &ldquo;And we can only wish and hope Oscar Pistorius will come out a better human being.&rdquo; &ldquo;We tend to forget that there is a possibility where somebody can be rehabilitated.&rdquo;

South Africa faced heavy backlash from current and former players after it named a shadow side for the two-Test tour of New Zealand reserving their top players for the the second season of the SA20 -- launched by CSA and IPL investors last year.
While the two Tests in New Zealand are scheduled from February 4 to 17, the SA20 is slated to start from January 10.
"That's been a wake-up call for everyone," Hockley told SEN.
"The role of T20 [in] bringing new kids and new people into the game can't be underestimated. The belief is that the two can coexist. This was suboptimal scheduling," said Hockley.
"I think we in Australia - it's very clear that throughout the whole period the Big Bash has been around - have always prioritised international cricket.
"But this has shone a light. And certainly, we'll be working with the ICC through scheduling groups to make sure those types of clashes don't manifest and really champion the fact that people need to be prioritising international cricket." There is a divide when it comes to allotting Test matches as part of a series with big teams such as India, England and Australia getting 3 to 5 Tests, while the rest competing mostly in two Test series as part of WTC.
According to the WTC regulations, a series should contain a minimum of two Tests.
"The preference is a minimum three-Test series. So, we'll keep advocating and championing that," Hockley said.
"I do think there is work to be done on the FTP (Future Tours Programme) going forward, and it's really [about] cementing the World Test Championship, [and] really advocating for three-Test series as an absolute minimum.
"And then as best as we possibly can, making sure that [when it comes to] domestic T20 competitions, we minimise the overlap for those countries where it is an important source of revenue, so that every country is prioritising international - and particularly Test - cricket." The rise of franchise-based T20 leagues has affected the scheduling of international cricket with players often opting for the shortest format.

Both sides finished with 14 players as left winger Cheslin Kolbe was sin-binned for a deliberate knock on. Center Jordie Barrett took the penalty shot from nearly 50 meters wide of the right post but it sailed wide with Kolbe holding his head in his hands, unable to watch.
"It was a real arm wrestle," New Zealand coach Ian Foster said "Incredibly proud of the way we fought and to get within a whisker of pulling it off is heart-breaking." Cane was sin-binned but referee Wayne Barnes pulled out the dreaded red after the punishment was upgraded late in the first half following a bunker review.
The All Blacks had already had a yellow card after three minutes to flanker Shannon Frizell. Springboks captain Siya Kolisi was sin-binned early in the second half, for another high tackle, evening the numbers with the score 12-6 to South Africa.
Saturday's 106th showdown between the gigantic rivals was played on a wet field and pitted the two top-ranked sides.
Federer, wearing a South Africa scarf, and fellow tennis great Novak Djokovic were among the crowd of 80,065 who witnessed a gripping but scrappy game.
New Zealand scrumhalf Aaron Smith dived over in the left corner early in the second half but the try was ruled out. Mo'unga made a great break from midfield, dummied inside fullback Damian Willemse and fed Smith to dive over. But yet another TMO decision ruled out the try for a knock on in the buildup.
Kolisi's card was not upgraded and he came back on moments later with 25 minutes left to play. New Zealand was on top and a brilliant improvised one-handed looping pass from Jordie Barrett found wing Mark Tele'a, and he slipped two tackles before feeding Beauden Barrett in the left corner.
It gave New Zealand hope, but in the end Kolisi became only the second skipper to lead a team to back-to-back World Cup victories after New Zealand great Richie McCaw.
"There are no ways I can explain it. I want to give credit to the All Blacks. They took us to the end, they took us to a dark place," Kolisi said.
"It shows what kind of team they are, to fight with a man down from early in the game. They put us under so much pressure." When Barnes blew the final whistle, a tearful Kolbe looked up in relief, Kolisi put his hands on his head in jubilant disbelief, then hugged Kolbe while Cane was sat staring ahead in despair. South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber also looked tearful as his staff grabbed him in celebration.
The dream final was stop-started by a stream of penalties under steady rain.
Frizell was penalised for tackling hooker Bongi Mbonambi in a neck roll. Mbonambi hurt his right knee and was replaced by veteran Deon Fourie.
Pollard's penalty went over, but losing Mbonambi was a big blow. With Frizell still serving his penalty, Pollard slotted over again when Codie Taylor failed to roll away.
New Zealand hit back in the 17th minute when scrumhalf Faf de Klerk was penalized for a tackle off the ball and flyhalf Mo'unga kicked the points. But Savea was pinged moments later for a foul on opposite number Duane Vermeulen and Pollard's 40-meter kick crept over.
Calmness personified from Pollard, in contrast to Cane's rush of blood. A TMO review showed him leading with his shoulder into Kriel's face.
New Zealand withstood two yellow cards in a 28-24 win against Ireland in the quarterfinals, but never trailed in that game, and fell further behind in this one when Pollard's penalty sailed over following an offside.
Seconds earlier, Cane's foul was upgraded to a red following a bunker review and he sank his head into his hands.
Still, even with a player less, New Zealand almost scored the game's first try in the left corner when center Rieko Ioane was tackled just in time by Kurt-Lee Arendse. A penalty for lock Eben Etzebeth was kicked by Mo'unga to make it a six-point game at the break.
But the All Blacks faced the whole second half &mdash; and the threat of South Africa's Bomb Squad' &mdash; with a player less. Until Kolisi trudged off for a high tackle on Savea, again picked up by a TMO in overdrive.
Smith tapped his heart when he came off with 15 minutes left, having played his last game for the All Blacks.
Same for Nienaber, who heads back home a hero.
Typically, he deflected the credit onto his players.

A Hindu organisation in South Africa has appealed to the country's national public broadcaster to increase screen-time for Hindu-based programming, as per reports.
The South African Hindu Dharma Sabha wrote to the South African Broadcasting Corporation on 6 April 2023 to reinstate a programme titled 'Sadhana' with new content. The appeal came after the SABC announced that it would bring new content on only one of its two weekly Hindu programmes. The other Hindu devotional programme titled "Aum", is being repeated for the past three years now, he said.
&ldquo;SAHDS is a highly respected, national Hindu religious and cultural organisation including all linguistic and denominational groups. (It) is a mass-based, grass-roots, inclusive, democratic, performance-driven, developmental, progressive and caring organisation,&rdquo; the group said in an open letter to senior officials of SABC and the parliament urging them to increase the coverage of Hindu-based programmes.
It appealed to Indian businesses to support the programme through advertising. &ldquo;We duly note that while programmes, including cultural and religious content, might not make profits or revenues, we fit in as part of the public mandate,&rdquo; the letter said.
It also proposed that 10 am be the starting time and not 7:30 am as is the current schedule.
