British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday sacked his Indian-origin Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, days after days it emerged that a controversial newspaper article attacking the Metropolitan Police was published without clearance from her boss, according to reports coming out from Downing Street.
The 43-year-old Goan-origin Cabinet minister has repeatedly courted controversy in her senior UK Cabinet role, most recently by accusing the Met Police of &ldquo;playing favourites&rdquo; when tackling aggressive Israel-Gaza protests in an article in &lsquo;The Times.
Sunak, the first Indian-origin British prime minister, had been under pressure from sections of his Conservative Party as well as faced attacks from the Opposition for allowing her to continue in her job after she went ahead with the article in a perceived breach of the ministerial code.
&ldquo;Our brave police officers deserve the thanks of every decent citizen for their professionalism in the face of violence and aggression from protesters and counter-protesters in London yesterday. That multiple officers were injured doing their duty is an outrage,&rdquo; Braverman said in a statement on Sunday evening following far-right violence during the protests over the weekend.

In an article for &lsquo;The Spectator&rsquo; magazine this week, the Indian-origin Cabinet minister stressed that it was necessary to acknowledge the role that ethnicity played in covering up the grooming gangs scandal.
Targeting the Opposition Labour Party, Braverman said &ldquo;unfashionable facts&rdquo; such as the ethnicity of those behind such scandals in parts of England were being countered by &ldquo;fashionable fictions.&rdquo; &ldquo;If we are to address the injustice of the grooming gangs scandal, we must be willing to acknowledge the role that ethnicity played in covering it up,&rdquo; Braverman writes in the article entitled &lsquo;The truth can&rsquo;t be racist&rsquo;.
&ldquo;To say that the overwhelming majority of perpetrators in towns such as Rotherham, Telford, and Rochdale were British Pakistani and that their victims were white girls is not to say that most British Pakistanis are perpetrators of sexual abuse. The former is a truth, one that made authorities reluctant to confront the issue. The latter is a lie, the speaking of which would be a disgraceful prejudice,&rdquo; she writes.
She lamented the &ldquo;politician&rsquo;s lot&rdquo; as she admitted that her motives for making the statement will be questioned, but hit back at those &ldquo;casually&rdquo; accusing her of racism for speaking plain truths.
&ldquo;There is something peculiar about this political moment, where those of us advancing unfashionable facts are beaten over the head with fashionable fictions. I suppose the ethnicity of grooming gang perpetrators in a string of cases is the sort of fact that has simply become unfashionable in some quarters. Like the fact that 100 per cent of women do not have a penis,&rdquo; she notes, alluding to another emotive debate around transgender access to female spaces.
Her intervention comes in the wake of strong objections from within the British Pakistani community, including claims that it has led many to distance themselves from the governing Conservatives since Braverman&rsquo;s comments earlier this month for the launch of the government&rsquo;s new Grooming Gangs Taskforce.
Last week, the British Pakistani Foundation (BPF), which claims to represent 18,000 Pakistani heritage members, wrote to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ask his cabinet minister to withdraw her &ldquo;irresponsible words&rdquo; as it would be perceived as normalising bigotry against the community.
Similar letters were also issued by other British Pakistani groups, with Tory peer Baroness Sayeeda Warsi warning that she feared a backlash against British Muslims due to the remarks.
In a series of television interviews earlier this month, Braverman said that the perpetrators of sexual crimes via grooming gangs are "groups of men, almost all British Pakistani".

Responding to Braverman&rsquo;s remarks, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that they painted a &ldquo;highly misleading picture signalling the intent to target and treat British Pakistanis differently&rdquo;.
She said the British home secretary had &ldquo;erroneously branded criminal behaviour of some individuals as a representation of the entire community&rdquo;.
&ldquo;She (Braverman) fails to take note of the systemic racism and ghettoisation of communities and omits to recognise the tremendous cultural, economic and political ontributions that British-Pakistanis continue to make in British society,&rdquo; Baloch said at a press conference here.
In an interview about the UK government's plans to tackle child sexual abuse, Braverman spoke about &ldquo;the predominance of British-Pakistani males who hold cultural values totally at odds with British values&rdquo;.
&ldquo;[British-Pakistani men] see women in a demeaned, illegitimate way, and pursue an outdated and frankly heinous approach to the way we behave,&rdquo; Braverman commented after she was informed that a Home Office report in 2020 concluded that most child sexual abuse gangs are made up of white men under the age of 30 and that there was not enough evidence to suggest members of grooming gangs were disproportionately more likely to be Asian or Black.
Braverman pointed to reports from Rotherham town, which was rocked by a child sexual exploitation scandal in which five British-Pakistani men were convicted of grooming, raping and exploiting young girls.

The new Graduate Visa route, which allows foreign graduates &ndash; including Indians &ndash; the chance to stay on to job hunt and gain work experience for up to two years without the requirement of a specific job offer, is expected to be cut under Braverman&rsquo;s proposed review.
According to 'The Times', the Indian-origin home secretary has drawn up a plan to "reform" the Graduate Visa route requiring students to obtain a work visa by getting a skilled job or leave the UK after six months. The newspaper refers to leaked advice to say that the UK Department for Education (DfE) is attempting to block the changes as they fear it would harm the UK&rsquo;s attractiveness to international students.

It is another massive blow to the prime minister&rsquo;s authority after she was forced to sack Kwasi Kwarteng and rip up her economic strategy to avoid a markets meltdown.

Braverman, the Conservative Party member of Parliament for Fareham in south-east England, served as the Attorney General in the Boris Johnson-led government. She was among the first contenders to throw her hat in the ring to replace Johnson as Tory leader and Prime Minister. She was named as the Home Secretary by Prime Minister Truss.
The mother of two children is the daughter of Hindu Tamil mother Uma and Goan-origin father Christie Fernandes. Her mother migrated to the UK from Mauritius while her father migrated from Kenya in the 1960s.
Braverman is a Buddhist who attends the London Buddhist Centre regularly and took her oath of office in Parliament on the &lsquo;Dhammapada&rsquo; scripture of Lord Buddha&rsquo;s sayings.

&lsquo;The Times&rsquo; quoted government sources to say that ministers in New Delhi were &ldquo;shocked and disappointed&rdquo; by the &ldquo;disrespectful&rdquo; remarks made by Braverman, who said she had concerns of an &ldquo;open borders&rdquo; offer to India as part of an FTA. The likelihood of meeting the Diwali deadline for the pact, set by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is now believed to be diminishing.

The Indian High Commission in London responded by pointing out that action had been initiated on all cases referred to it under the MMP.
&ldquo;Mobility has been the key Indian ask and everything else &ndash; financial services, banking, education, rules of origin on whisky, etc, hinges on the mobility ask. And Suella has gone and pulled the rug from under that mobility ask,&rdquo; a senior UK government source told &lsquo;The Times&rsquo;.
&ldquo;They were apoplectic. Mad doesn&rsquo;t even come close to describing how angry they are,&rdquo; noted another.
While the perception is that Braverman is on a collision course with <a href="https://www.editorji.com/world-news/uk-pm-liz-truss-sacks-trade-minister-conor-burns-1665199219464">British Prime Minister Liz Truss</a>, who is keen to clinch the FTA by the Diwali deadline, the media report indicates that both are aligned on the issue of migration.

“We even reached an agreement with the Indian government last year to encourage and facilitate better cooperation in this regard. It has not necessarily worked very well,” the 42-year-old minister said.
Braverman was referencing the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) clinched between her predecessor in the Home Office, Indian-origin former Home Secretary Priti Patel, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in May last year.
"This landmark agreement with our close partners in the government of India will provide new opportunities to thousands of young people in the UK and India seeking to live, work and experience each other’s cultures. This agreement will also ensure that the British government can remove those with no right to be in the UK more easily and crack down on those abusing our system," Patel said of the MMP at the time.
But Braverman’s contention that the pact has not worked very well is seen as a clear indication that she is unlikely to back her boss, Liz Truss, on any further visa offers that are expected to be a part of a wider FTA.
It comes in the wake of her comments at the Conservative Party annual conference earlier this week, where she targeted "low-skilled migrants" and the growing numbers of student visas being issued.
"We should be looking more at students. We’ve had a massive increase in the number of students coming into this country. I do think we do get to a point where we have to look at some of the courses that people are doing in this country, some of the institutions, they are not always very good quality," said Braverman.
"I think it's legitimate to question whether that is going to serve our economic objectives, and taking a more discerning, smart approach to the number of student visas I think is highly consistent with our agenda for growth," she noted.
Her intervention comes at a time when India has overtaken China as the country with the highest number of student visas issued to study at higher education institutions in the UK. According to the latest Home Office data, around 118,000 Indian students received a UK student visa in the year ending June 2022 – an 89 per cent increase from the previous year.
Indians have also consistently topped the charts of highly skilled migrants issued visas to live and work in the UK.
Under a new FTA, it has been widely expected that India would be seeking to bolster that trend for its students and professionals as part of an enhanced two-way exchange across different sectors.

In her first speech since being appointed home minister at the Conservative Party annual conference in Birmingham on Tuesday evening, Braverman referenced her visit to the eastern England city after clashes involving many Hindu and Muslim groups last month.
The Indian High Commission in London had also issued a statement at the time expressing concern for the safety of people of Indian-origin targeted in what the local police termed as “serious disorder”.
“The unexamined drive towards multiculturalism as an end in itself combined with the corrosive aspects of identity politics has led us astray,” Braverman told the audience of Tory MPs and members.
“I saw this when I went to Leicester recently. A melting pot of cultures and a beacon of religious harmony. But even there, riots and civil disorder have taken place because of failures to integrate large numbers of newcomers. Such conflict has no place in the UK,” she said.
The daughter of a Tamil mother and Goan-origin father, Braverman insisted it was not “racist” to want to control the UK’s borders as she pledged to cut “low-skilled foreign workers”. The Brexit-backing barrister and former Attorney General in the UK Cabinet used her family heritage as a reference point to back up her plans to control migration into the country.
“This isn’t just about policy or economics for me. It’s intensely personal. My parents came here in the 1960s from Kenya and Mauritius. They loved Britain from afar, as children of the Commonwealth. It was Britain that offered them security and opportunity as young adults,” she said, amid several interludes of applause.
“It’s not racist for anyone, ethnic minority or otherwise, to want to control our borders. It’s not bigoted to say that we have too many asylum seekers who are abusing the system. It’s not xenophobic to say that mass and rapid migration places pressure on housing, public services and community relations,” she said.
“My parents came here through legal and controlled migration. They spoke the language, threw themselves into the community, they embraced British values. When they arrived, they signed up to be part of our shared project because the United Kingdom meant something distinct. Integration was part of the quid pro quo,” she added.
The minister reiterated that integration did not mean abandoning their Indian heritage but meant adopting British identity.
“This is the best place on earth to come and live in, but I fear that we are losing sight of the core values and the culture that made it so,” she warned.
As part of her pledge on migration, the new home minister vowed to control the small boats bringing illegal migrants across the English Channel, leaving a safe country like France and "abusing" the UK’s asylum system. Praising the efforts of her predecessor, Priti Patel – also of Indian origin, Braverman committed herself to making the scheme of deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda work, which Patel had launched but is yet to fully take off.
Braverman's pledge to cut crime with “more PCs, less PC”, a reference to increasing the number of police constables (PCs) and reducing the political correctness (PC) preventing them from acting in some cases won her all round applause at the conference.

Based on the complaint, the SIT has registered the First Information Report (FIR), he said, adding that investigation into the case has begun.
Fernandes complained that some unidentified person through power of attorney had filed inventory proceedings with respect to the properties bearing survey numbers 253/3 and 252/3 in Assagao village owned by him and his family members, police sources said.
As per the complaint, the inventory proceedings were filed prior to July 27 this year and he came to know about it in August.
Fernandes filed the complaint to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, state Director General of Police Jaspal Singh and Goa NRI Commissionerate through an e-mail.
When contacted, Goa NRI commissioner Narendra Sawaikar told PTI that the e-mail was received last week by his department, which was forwarded to the state home department.
"The NRI Commissionerate does not have powers to investigate such cases. Hence, we forwarded the complaint to the home department," he said.
The Goa government earlier this year formed the SIT comprising officials from the police, revenue and Archives and Archaeology Department to investigate cases of land grabbing. The SIT is investigating more than 100 such cases in the state, and arrested more than 15 persons, including two officials from Archives and Archaeology Department.

“They loved Britain. It gave them hope. It gave them security. This country gave them an opportunity. I think my background’s really informed by my approach to politics,” said Braverman about her parents in her leadership campaign launch video in July.
However, she was knocked out in the second round of the initial ballot of Tory MPs and threw her support behind Truss, who as Prime Minister has rewarded her with one of the highest offices in the UK government.
“Liz is ready now to be PM. She won’t need to learn on the job. And the job is hard and needs to be done properly. The party has had a difficult six years and stability is urgently and swiftly needed,” Braverman said of her future boss at Downing Street.
The Cambridge University law graduate married Rael Braverman in 2018 and her maternity leave famously brought about an overdue legal change last year to allow her to remain a Cabinet minister while away to give birth to their second child.
Braverman is a Buddhist who attends the London Buddhist Centre regularly and took her oath of office in Parliament on the ‘Dhammapada’ scripture of Lord Buddha’s sayings.

However, she was knocked out in the second round of the initial ballot of Tory MPs and threw her support behind Truss, who as Prime Minister has rewarded her with one of the highest offices in the UK government.
&ldquo;Liz is ready now to be PM. She won&rsquo;t need to learn on the job. And the job is hard and needs to be done properly. The party has had a difficult six years and stability is urgently and swiftly needed,&rdquo; Braverman said of her future boss at Downing Street.
The Cambridge University law graduate married Rael Braverman in 2018 and her maternity leave famously brought about an overdue legal change last year to allow her to remain a Cabinet minister while away to give birth to their second child.
Braverman is a Buddhist who attends the London Buddhist Centre regularly and took her oath of office in Parliament on the &lsquo;Dhammapada&rsquo; scripture of Lord Buddha&rsquo;s sayings.

Britain's new Prime Minister Liz Truss hit the ground running at Downing Street on Tuesday by announcing some of the senior-most Cabinet posts.
Indian-origin Suella Braverman, who was also in the running to the be the PM in the intial stages, has been appointed the Home Secretary. 
Her predecessor was Priti Patel who handed in her resignation to outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday.
Among the others in the Truss' top team include close allies such as Therese Coffey as Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Kwasi Kwarteng as Chancellor of the Exchequer. James Cleverly steps up to the post of Foreign Secretary – Truss’ own portfolio in the Boris Johnson led government.
Wendy Morton, another ally, has been appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury and becomes the first Tory female Chief Whip in charge of party discipline.
“We have huge reserves of talent, of energy, and determination,” Truss said in her inaugural address outside 10 Downing Street earlier on Tuesday.
“I am confident that together we can: ride out the storm, we can rebuild our economy, and we can become the modern brilliant Britain that I know we can be. This is our vital mission to ensure opportunity and prosperity for all people and future generations. I am determined to deliver,” she said.
Truss will carry on with finalising her Cabinet appointments over the course of this week as she prepares for her first Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

Truss will carry on with finalising her Cabinet appointments over the course of this week as she prepares for her first Prime Minister&rsquo;s Questions (PMQs) in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

For the first time in UK history, no white men will occupy any of the four "great offices of state": prime minister, Treasury, foreign office and home affairs.
