The fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, police said citing initial probe.

At least six persons, including a minor boy, were killed in a fire accident at a private hospital in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, police and Fire department officials said.
All the six were found unconscious in a lift, they said. They were rushed to a hospital where they were declared dead by doctors.
The victims suffocated to death and the Fire and Rescue Services personnel found them inside the lift after evacuating about 30 in-patients of the hospital. The evacuated persons have been admitted in the district GH, the officials added.
The fire was suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, police said citing initial probe.
TV visuals showed fire and smoke billowing from the hospital building, with fire tenders pressed into service to put down the flames.

Vasanthakumar, Head of Dermatology at the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital, and had been under treatment for cardiac issues. The Kaveripakkam police have sent her body for post-mortem at Vellore Government Hospital and are conducting further inquiries.
CCTV footage from the classroom captured the heartbreaking sequence of events. It shows a classmate alerting the teacher after Advitha fainted. The teacher is seen responding promptly to assist her, while other students rushed to seek additional help.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine more details surrounding the incident.

"We have secured eight suspects so far. This is early an investigation, a preliminary investigation. So after some time, a clear and better picture will emerge with more facts and circumstances coming to light," he said.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Wednesday said it has sought a detailed report from the Tamil Nadu labour department on the issue of married women not being allowed to work at the Foxconn India Apple iPhone Plant as reported by the media.
Section 5 of the Equal Remuneration Act 1976 clearly stipulates that no discrimination is to be made while recruiting men and women workers, the labour ministry said in a statement.
As the state government is the appropriate authority for the enforcement and administration of the provisions of this Act, the report has been sought from it, it stated.
At the same time, it stated that the office of Regional Chief Labour Commissioner has also been directed to furnish the report to the Ministry of Labour &amp; Employment, Government of India.

The toll from the hooch tragedy in Tamil Nadu's Kallakurichi has risen to 50, state Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Friday.
The dead included 3 women and a transgender.
Of the deceased, 25 died at the Kallakurichi government hospital, 3 at JIPMER in Puducherry, 16 at Salem Government Medical College Hospital, and 4 at Villupuram government medical college hospital, he told reporters in Puducherry after visiting those undergoing treatment at various government medical facilities.
AIADMK chief and state Leader of Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami had earlier in the day claimed 50 people had died after consuming illicit arrack in Kallakurichi, a northern district in the state.
Minister Subramanian said that 168 persons including 9 women and a transgender were admitted to various hospitals.
A medical team under the Deputy Director of Health has been constituted to take up a door survey to ascertain the exact number of persons affected due to the illicit arrack consumption, the Minister told reporters in Puducherry.
Earlier, Subramanian interacted with the senior health officials on the treatment being provided to the affected.
Meanwhile, slamming the Tamil Nadu government for the hooch tragedy, the Madras High Court directed it to file a detailed report on the steps taken to curb the sale of illicit arrack in the state.
A division bench comprising Justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu gave the directive while posting to June 26, further hearing of a Public Interest Litigation filed by AIADMK legal wing secretary I S Inbadurai. The PIL sought a direction to the state government to transfer to CBI, the investigation into the crime/offence, sale of illicit arrack by accused persons in Kallakurichi district.
The report should also contain as to the action taken into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, besides, that pursuant to a similar incident in Villupuram's Marakanam last year, the bench added.
When the case came up for hearing, the bench orally observed this case was about the lives of the people and therefore the court wants to know as to what action was taken by the police to curb sale of illicit arrack and how many cases were filed in the state in the last one year.
The bench also said it had read a news report regarding illicit arrack being sold in Kallakurichi even before this tragedy.
Even some Youtubers had spoken about it. The National Human Rights Commission had also issued a notice in this regard to the Tamil Nadu government in May. It had called for a detailed report on steps taken to curb the sale of spurious liquor. This was not the first time the state machinery had failed in preventing deaths due to spurious liquor, the bench added.
Advocate general P S Raman said the government has taken earnest steps to treat those in hospitals. It was taking steps to curb the sale of illicit arrack.
The district collector has been transferred, he added.

Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prasanth visited those undergoing treatment in Government Medical College Hospital in the district.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed shock over the deaths and said that action had been taken against officials who failed to prevent it.
"I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of the deaths of people who had consumed adulterated liquor in Kallakurichi. Those involved in the crime have been arrested in this matter. Action has also been taken against the officials who failed to prevent it," Stalin said in a post on X.
"Immediate action will be taken if the public informs about those involved in such crimes. Such crimes that ruin the society will be suppressed with an iron fist," he added.
TN Governor RN Ravi condoled the deaths and wished for a speedy recovery of the victims.
"I was very shocked to know that many lives were lost in Kallakurichi due to consumption of counterfeit liquor. Many others are fighting for their lives in critical condition. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and a speedy recovery to those admitted to the hospitals," a post shared by Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan mentioned.
The governor raised concern about continued reports of deaths due to the consumption of spurious liquor from different parts of the state.
"From time to time, news emerges from different parts of our state about deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor. They reflect continuing shortcomings in curbing illicit alcohol production and consumption. This is a matter of serious concern," the post further stated.

Popularly known as Selvarasu, the CPI leader was born in 1957 in Tiruvarur district. He was not keeping well for some months and he breathed his last in the wee hours today, the sources said.
The four-time MP made a mark in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections when he won from Nagapattinam constituency. He also emerged victorious in the 1996, 1998 and 2019 general elections.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, who condoled the death, said Selvaraj's demise was an irreparable loss to the CPI and the people of the delta districts as well.
CPI state secretary R Mutharasan too condoled the death.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, who expressed condolences over the incident, directed the district authorities to provide appropriate medical care to the injured and save lives.
Eight workers, including five women and three men, were killed in the accident at a fireworks-manufacturing unit near Sengamalapatti in Sivakasi in the district. Seven rooms where the firecrackers were stocked were completely gutted, police said.

It was learnt that more than 10 persons were injured and they required medical attention, he said. "I have directed the officials to ensure appropriate life-saving treatment for the injured," Stalin said in a release here.
The state government will extend relief to the affected families after obtaining due consent from the Election Commission (as the Model Code of Conduct is in force till June 4), he said, and extended his deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families. President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday said she was saddened to know about the loss of lives in an explosion at a firecracker factory near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. "Saddened to learn about the loss of many lives due to an explosion at a firecracker factory near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for speedy recovery of the injured," the President said in a post on X.

As the election season hots up, a debate turns ugly in Tamil Nadu. A video, that's viral on the internet, has captured workers of opposing political parties hurling chairs at each other during a news debate show.&nbsp;
As per reports, a live event named Makkal Sabhai was organized by News 18 Tamil Nadu channel on April 6 in Kanchipuram. The panel comprised representatives from different political parties.
However, it is currently not known what caused the ruckus.&nbsp;

Lok Sabha MP from Erode and senior MDMK leader A Ganeshamurthi died in a Coimbatore hospital, after a suspected suicide attempt.
The Tamil Nadu politician was rushed to a hospital in his constituency on Sunday after he allegedly developed uneasiness. The 76-year-old was later shifted to Coimbatore, admitted to the ICU and put on ventilator support.
Police suspected a possible suicide attempt.
The MDMK leader died at the hospital early Thursday morning, reportedly of heart attack.

A mural by Singaporean artist Yip Yew Chong in Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s Ukkadam has caught the fancy of Indians online.
Chong created a 4-storey high mural celebrating the local cuisine. The mural features a man pouring steaming hot filter coffee into a glass and a woman making dosa. In the background, there is a banana leaf with delicacies of the state. It also showed local vendors and a cat.&nbsp;
The artist also posted an Instagram reel showing a glimpse of the people and surroundings that inspired him to paint the mural.
"Immersing myself in the community and local culture allows me to paint with my heart for the community. I knew many in the community could relate and love the mural because when they stopped by, they gave me the "Supera" hand signals," &nbsp;Chong wrote in the caption.
Netizens have applauded the artist for his creativity and eye for detail.
