Tata group and Infosys have topped the list of most valuable companies in India in Brand Finance's annual ranking report. Following the merger, HDFC group climbed to the third position in the list.&nbsp;
&ldquo;Brand value refers to the present value of earnings specifically related to brand reputation. Organisations own and control these earnings by owning trademark rights,&rdquo; explains the report published by Brand Finance, a chartered accountancy firm regulated by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
<h3>Brand value report</h3>
The India 100 report by Brand Value was curated by assessing over 250 Indian brands spanning across sectors like IT, hospitality, automotives, retail and more.&nbsp;
Tata Group which was at the top last year too has recorded an impressive 9% growth in brand value which is at $28.6 billion. Similarly, Infosys too retained the second spot on the list of most valuable Indian brands with the same 9% growth in brand value of $14.2 billion.
The fourth spot went to LIC Group while Reliance ranked fifth to complete the top 5. SBI Group and Airtel placed sixth and seventh respectively.
Meanwhile, HCL Tech which was at the 10th position last year, jumped two places this year. Larsen &amp; Toubro was a new entrant on the list, securing the ninth spot on the list of the most valuable Indian brands. Mahindra rounded up the top 10.

The transaction values Tata Play at approximately 1 billion dollars. The report further adds that Tata Group will take full control of the TV platform by acquiring Disney's 29.8% stake.
This follows Disney's binding agreement in February to merge its India unit with Viacom 18 Media, forming an 8.5 billion dollars entertainment entity.

Among the companies speculated to go public are Tata Capital, Tata Autocomp Systems, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, BigBasket, Tata Digital, Tata Electronics, Tata Housing, and Tata Batteries. The conglomerate aims to capitalize on emerging sectors such as digital, retail, semiconductors, and electric vehicle batteries, indicating a strategic shift towards new-age industries.
According to insiders cited in the report, the decision to pursue IPOs is not impulsive but rather a well-thought-out strategy aimed at fueling growth and providing exit opportunities for select investors. While no specific deadlines have been set, discussions within Tata Sons suggest a calculated approach to maximize value from businesses that have matured over the years.
Explaining the rationale behind the IPO plans, an executive highlighted that many of the businesses incubated over two decades ago have now entered a growth phase, presenting ripe opportunities for monetization. Moreover, there has been a strategic pivot towards India-centric growth initiatives, marking a departure from the earlier focus on overseas acquisitions.
However, sources emphasize that Tata Group is not rushing into IPOs for the sake of it. Instead, decisions will be driven by a clear purpose, whether to offer exit opportunities or unlock shareholder value. The conglomerate remains committed to making informed choices in line with its long-term vision.

Tata group companies, Air India and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) plan to invest Rs 2,300 crore in Karnataka for various projects. As per Tata group, the investment can potentially create about 1,650 jobs.
<h3>MoU with Karnataka</h3>
While signing the MoU, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil were present. In an official statement, Air India said that it is planning to set up a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility and "create" Bengaluru as the aviation hub in South India.
"The investment for the project is around Rs 1,300 crore. This will ensure direct employment generation of 1,200 people," it said.

According to a National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) study, the hub creation will increase the passengers handled by eight MPPA (Million Passengers Per Annum) thus giving direct and indirect employment opportunity for 25,000 to 26,000 people due to a boost in business activity, support staff and tourism in Karnataka, the statement said.
TASL is planning to set up three projects with total investment of Rs 1,030 crore -- Passenger to Freighter Aircraft Conversion facility (Rs 420 crore), a gun manufacturing facility (Rs 310 crore) and Aerospace and Defence Research and Development in Karnataka (Rs 300 crore). These projects would generate direct employment for 450 people, it said.
TASL's plans to source more than 50% of its 13,000 parts from Karnataka for its gun manufacturing facility, which is estimated to provide employment to 2,000-3,000 people in 300-350 small and medium enterprises, it added.

In a milestone achievement, the market value of the Tata group has grown big enough to overtake Pakistan's entire economy, given its outsized return in the last one year. The market capitalisation of the salt-to-software conglomerate stood at $365 billion or Rs 30.3 lakh crore while IMF estimates Pakistan's GDP to be worth around $341 billion.
<h3>Tata Group's M-cap&nbsp;</h3>
Tata Group's software arm Tata Consultancy Service with $ 170 billion value is roughly half the size of Pakistan's economy. Most of the recent gains in Tata Group's market value came from multibagger returns in Tata Motors and Trent along with healthy rally seen in Titan, TCS and Tata Power in the last one year.

As per The Economic Times, at least 8 Tata companies, including the recently-listed Tata Technologies, have more than doubled wealth in the last one year - TRF, Trent, Benaras Hotels, Tata Investment Corporation, Tata Motors, Automobile Corporation of Goa and Artson Engineering. Tata Capital, which has to bring out its IPO by next year, has a market value of ₹2.7 lakh crore.

Meanwhile, Pakistan which has been sitting on debt for quite some time now has its $3 billion programme from the IMF ending in March. The country is trying to meet $25 billion of external debt payments starting July. Pakistan's GDP recorded a growth of 6.1% in FY22, 5.8% in FY21 and estimated to have contracted in FY23.&nbsp;

As per the Bloomberg report, Tata wants to construct the factory in Hosur in the southern Tamil Nadu state. The facility will likely have about 20 assembly lines and employ 50,000 workers within two years. The report also mentions that Tata group is aiming to make the site operational in 12 to 18 months.

Tata already has an electronic manufacturing unit in Hosur where it manufactures iPhone enclosures, or metal casings and the Bloomberg report mentioned that hiring in the unit has been accelerated. In an effort to make its partnership with Apple go beyond manufacturing, Tata has also said that it will launch 100 retail stores focused on Apple products.
As per Bloomberg, the new plant in Hosur is set to be &nbsp;mid-sized among iPhone factories globally. It would likely be bigger than the one Tata acquired from Wistron, which employs more than 10,000 people, and smaller than Foxconn&rsquo;s biggest China facilities that employ hundreds of thousands.
This plan is expected to bolster Apple&rsquo;s efforts to localize its supply chain and strengthen its partnership with Tata. The Indian conglomerate already has an iPhone factory it acquired from Wistron Corp, located in Karnataka.
The Production linked subsidies introduced by the Union government has so far spurred Apple&rsquo;s key suppliers such as Taiwan&rsquo;s Foxconn Technology Group and Pegatron Corp. to ramp up in India. In the last fiscal, Apple assemble more than $7 billion of iPhones in India increasing its share of the device&rsquo;s production to about 7%.

It also planned to triple the plant&rsquo;s workforce by next year. Tata is set to honor those commitments as Wistron exits the iPhone business in India.&nbsp;

With this takeover, Wistron will be completely divesting from the iPhone business in India which is estimated to be worth $600 million. So far, Wistron's &nbsp;Indian plant had nearly eight production lines and are manufacturing iPhone 12 and iPhone 14. As per Business Line, There are speculations that Tata will start manufacturing iPhone 15 after the takeover.
Tata has also taken other efforts to expand its business with Apple. The group has increased the hiring at its plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, where iPhone components are manufactured.

According to a Bloomberg report, the deal negotiations had stalled over valuation concerns.
Tata Consumer, which owns the &ldquo;Himalayan&rdquo; mineral water brand, said it was interested in acquiring a stake in Bisleri International as a part of its expansion in September 2022.
Tata Consumer was set to acquire India&rsquo;s largest packaged drinking water company, Bisleri, for an estimated Rs 6,000-7,000 crore. Bisleri, with a market share of 32%, is the leader in the Rs 20,000 crore packaged drinking water segment. The IPO is purely an offer for sale (OFS), where the company will sell up to 9.57 crore equity shares representing approximately 23.60 per cent of its paid-up share capital, according to the Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP).
Under the OFS, Tata Technologies' parent company Tata Motors will offload 8.11 crore shares or a 20 per cent stake in the company.
Among other shareholders, Alpha TC Holdings Pte plans to sell up to 97.16 lakh shares (2.40 per cent) and Tata Capital Growth Fund I would offload up to 48.58 lakh equity shares (1.20 per cent).

Talks between the Tata group and India's largest bottled water maker, Bisleri, have reportedly stalled. Tata consumer products was in talks to acquire Veteran industrialist Ramesh Chauhan's Bisleri brand.&nbsp;
According to a Bloomberg report, Tata Group&rsquo;s discussions to acquire a majority stake in Bisleri have halted over valuation concerns. Bisleri&rsquo;s owners were looking to raise about $1 billion from a deal. But the companies were unable to agree on the valuation.&nbsp;
However, Bloomberg said the talks may still resume and other potential suitors may emerge.
Ramesh Chauhan, who is the chairman of Bisleri International, has no successor to take Bisleri to the next level of expansion.
For Tata Group, acquiring Bisleri could have expanded its portfolio of bottled water brands in India. One of the conglomerate&rsquo;s listed units, Tata Consumer Products Ltd. owns the Himalayan Natural Mineral Water and Tata Water Plus brands.

250 jets from Airbus, 220 from Boeing; Air India seals biggest aviation deal

Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the airline is on a large transformation journey across safety, customer service, technology, engineering, network and human resources.

In what is being termed the largest purchase in the commercial aviation industry, Tata Group-owned Air India said it will buy a total of 470 wide-body and narrow-body planes from Airbus and Boeing.
The total deal value is estimated to be at USD 80 billion, around Rs 6.40 lakh crores, PTI reported.
"The order comprises 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s, and 10 Boeing 777-9s wide-body aircraft, as well as 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft. The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines and the B777/787s by engines from GE Aerospace. All single-aisle aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International," the airline said in a statement.
According to Air India, the first of the new aircraft will enter service in late 2023 and the bulk of the planes are to arrive from mid-2025 onwards.

In a statement, which came days after the aviation regulator DGCA pulled up the Tata Group-owned full service carrier, Chandrasekaran also said that "we fell short of addressing this situation the way we should have."

Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran admitted on January 8, 2023 that Air India's response to the incident of a drunk passenger allegedly urinating on a woman on one of its international flights on November 26, 2022 should have been "much swifter".
In a statement, which came days after the aviation regulator DGCA pulled up the Tata Group-owned full service carrier, Chandrasekaran also said that "we fell short of addressing this situation the way we should have."
"The incident on Air India flight AI102 on November 26, 2022, has been a matter of personal anguish to me and my colleagues at Air India. Air India's response should have been much swifter. We fell short of addressing this situation the way it should have been,&rdquo; Chandrasekaran said in the statement on Sunday.
"The Tata group and Air India stand by the safety and well-being of our passengers with full conviction. We will review and repair every process to prevent or address any incidents of such unruly nature," he added in the statement.

Air India is close to placing historic orders for as many as 500 jetliners worth tens of billions of dollars from both Airbus and Boeing as it carves out an ambitious revival under the Tata Group conglomerate, industry sources told Reuters on Sunday.
The orders include as many as 400 narrow-body jets and 100 or more wide-bodies including Airbus A350s and Boeing 787s and 777s, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as finishing touches are placed on the mammoth deal in coming days.
Airbus and Boeing declined to comment. Tata Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

With regards to making all this official, the report adds that an announcement is expected within a week

In a major move to make Air India the second largest airline in the country, Tata Sons have reportedly started the process to bring all its airlines under one umbrella of Air India.&nbsp;&nbsp;
With this consolidation process, all its airline entities &ndash; Vistara, AirAsia India and Air India Express will reportedly come under Air India.&nbsp;
According to a report in the Economic Times, Tata Sons has started this process after holding several rounds of discussions with Singapore Airlines (SIA). If the process gets executed as planned, Air India could become the second largest airline in the country, especially in terms of fleet and market share, as per the report.&nbsp;
Tata Sons will have a low-cost carrier and a full-service airline under Air India post this merger, which may take more than a year to start properly functioning under the umbrella firm.&nbsp;
The Tatas took over Air India and Air India Express in January. In October 2021, Tatas emerged as the winning bidder for loss-making Air India. It offered a bid of Rs 18,000 crore, comprising a cash payment of Rs 2,700 crore and taking over the carrier's debt worth Rs 15,300 crore.

With a believe that Tata Group "will nurture and take care of it even better'', 82-year-old Ramesh J Chauhan will sell his packaged water company Bisleri to Tata Consumer for about Rs 6,000-7,000 crore.&nbsp;
According to the reports by ET, Chauhan, who has been in indifferent health in recent times, told the publication that the current management will continue for two years as part of the deal.
Chauhan said the Bisleri brand's turnover for FY23 is estimated at Rs 2,500 crore with profit at Rs 220 crore. Available numbers for the year ended March 2021, which was marked by Covid, shows income from sales at Rs 1,181 .7 crore and profit of Rs 95 crore, according to business intelligence platform Tofler, compared with revenue of Rs 1,472 crore and profit of Rs 100 crore for the year ended March 2020.
The mineral drinking water market size of packaged drinking water is around Rs 20,000 crore. Bisleri is the market leader for bottled water with a market share of 32 per cent.
Bisleri was originally an Italian brand that set up shop in India in Mumbai in 1965. The Chauhans acquired it in 1969. The company has 122 operational plants (13 of them owned) and a network of 4,500 distributors and 5,000 trucks across India and neighbouring countries.

Air India, which plans to induct 30 new wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, said the plan is code-named Vihaan.AI. The airline has also said about getting back its grounded aircraft in service. 
On the other side, Vistara has 55 aircraft and the number will increase to 60 in the upcoming months. In the winter schedule starting from October end, Vistara will add more flights to Europe as it has planned increasing capacity to Frankfurt and Paris.
While a start has been made on the transformation plan, key challenges remain. Air India is the market leader on long international routes that go as far as the US. But, IndiGo is also planning to become a significant player in that segment. It would become a strong competitor for Air India on certain routes.
It will be intresting to see if Air India achieve the goal it has set out for itself?
