TV ratings agency Broadcast Audience Research Council has decided to pause weekly ratings for news channels for three months. Amid the row over alleged rigging of TRPs, the agency said that it will review its system. The suspension of ratings applies to all English, Hindi, regional and business news channels. Mumbai police have filed cases against Republic TV and 2 Marathi channels over allegedly manipulating TRPs. Owners of the Marathi channels have been arrested and the directors and promoters of Republic TV are being investigated.

Thailand Police on Thursday cleared out protesters camping outside the PM's office after the&nbsp;government imposed emergency measure to clear the street protesters. The emergency decree came in after the protesters blocked a royal motorcade, reports said. As per the decree, gatherings of five or more people have been banned and severe curbs have been imposed on online messages. Protests have raged in Bangkok for three months. The protesters have called for ousting of the PM and reforms in Thai monarchy.

Re 1 fine on Prashant Bhushan for contempt of court

Prashant Bhushan has been asked to deposit the Re 1 fine by September 15, failing which he will be sentenced to three months in jail or will be barred from practicing as a lawyer for three years

The Supreme Court on Monday slapped a token fine of Re 1 on advocate Prashant Bhushan, who was held guilty of contempt for his tweets criticising the CJI and the Supreme Court. Bhushan has been asked to pay the fine by September 15, failing which he will be sentenced to three months in jail or will be barred from practicing as a lawyer for three years. Prashant Bhushan had refused to retract his comments or apologise, maintaining that it would be contempt of his conscience and the court. While pronouncing the sentence, the court said that Bhushan brought disrepute to the court by giving wide publicity to his statements before they were considered by the court.
