The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced stricter visa application requirements, causing frustration and financial losses for many travelers. Reports from the Times of India (TOI) reveal that rejection rates, previously under 2%, have now risen to 5&ndash;6% daily.
New Visa Requirements: The change stems from recent mandates by Dubai's immigration department. Applicants must now submit hotel booking confirmations with QR codes and return flight tickets directly to the immigration portal. Those staying with family or friends must provide additional proof of accommodation.

Industry Concerns: Travel agencies are witnessing a notable shift in approval trends. Nikhil Kumar, director of Passio Travels Pvt Ltd, expressed his frustration to TOI:
"Even when confirmed flight tickets and meticulous hotel stay details are attached, the visa applications are being rejected." Kumar&rsquo;s agency reports 5&ndash;6 rejections per day out of 100 submissions, a significant jump compared to earlier times.
Similarly, Vijay Thakkar of Hasmukh Travels highlighted cases where applications, even with complete documentation, were inexplicably denied. The financial burden on travelers, including visa fees and ticket cancellation charges, often totals over Rs 30,000 per person.
Emotional and Financial Strain: Travelers are reeling from the uncertainty. Rishikesh Pujari, director of Vihar Travels, shared an instance where a family of four had their visas rejected despite adhering to all requirements. The rejection, he noted, not only dampens spirits but also results in significant monetary losses.
Many travelers have expressed dismay at losing pre-booked flight and hotel expenses. This shift has cast a shadow over what was traditionally an exciting and straightforward travel experience.
Added Financial Scrutiny: The revised rules also demand proof of financial means. Applicants must show minimum funds of AED 5,000 (approximately Rs 1.14 lakh) for a two-month visa and AED 3,000 for shorter stays. Previously, such checks were conducted selectively at the airport. Now, they are mandatory, adding another hurdle for prospective visitors.
Broader Implications: The tightened visa regulations reflect a broader move by UAE authorities to enhance oversight and ensure financial transparency. However, the sudden changes have caught Indian travelers and travel agencies off guard, leading to calls for more predictable and traveler-friendly processes.
For now, the allure of Dubai&mdash;with its iconic skyscrapers, world-class shopping, and luxurious lifestyle&mdash;remains as strong as ever. Yet, the dream of experiencing this Gulf city has become notably harder to achieve.
Travelers and industry stakeholders are hopeful for a recalibration of the new rules, seeking a return to the ease and reliability of the past.

On Tuesday, the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has issued a weather &lsquo;advisory&rsquo; that &ldquo;the country will experience convective clouds over coastal areas moving towards Eastern and Western regions associated with rainfall of different intensities, accompanied by lightning and thunder, and a probability of hail in some areas.&rdquo;

An emergent meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) was held in Bahrain on February 4 at the behest of PCB chief Najam Sethi after the continental body released its itinerary and Pakistan wasn't named the hosts of the tournament.
Addressing the media here on Thursday, Sethi said more discussions on the hosting of Asia Cup ODI tournament will be held next month on the sidelines of an ICC meeting as the matter "remained unresolved".
"What can I say about what happened in the Asian Cricket Council board meeting. There was no resolution," Sethi told reporters when asked if Pakistan will host the tournament in September.
However, reliable sources aware of the developments, said the most likely solution to the problem appears to be that Pakistan will remain host of the Asia Cup but some matches will also be held in the UAE where India may play all its games, including the final if necessary (if India qualifies for the final).
"Sethi made it clear at the ACC meeting that PCB wants to host the event and some of the matches at home," the source said.
The Asia Cup was initially allotted to Pakistan and was scheduled in September this year but BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who is also the ACC chairman, had announced last October that India will not travel to Pakistan.
PTI had reported earlier this month that UAE with three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah -- are the favourites to host the tournament but a decision has been withheld for the time being.
"A shift of venue has been postponed till March. But be rest assured that with India not going to Pakistan, the tournament will have to be shifted," a senior BCCI official privy to the development had told PTI.

However, the announcement comes after the UAE normalised relations with Israel in 2020 as part of a deal brokered by the administration of President Donald Trump.
&ldquo;In the wake of the historic (hashtag)AbrahamAccords, (the UAE) will now include the Holocaust in the curriculum for primary and secondary schools,&rdquo; the embassy said in a tweet, referring to the normalisation deal that also saw Bahrain and ultimately Morocco also recognise Israel.
Ambassador Deborah E. Lipstadt, the US special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, praised the announcement in her own tweet.
&ldquo;Holocaust education is an imperative for humanity and too many countries, for too long, continue to downplay the Shoah for political reasons,&rdquo; Lipstadt wrote, using a Hebrew word for the Holocaust. &ldquo;I commend the UAE for this step and expect others to follow suit soon.&rdquo; The announcement comes ahead of a planned meeting of the Negev Forum Working Groups in Abu Dhabi this week, which grew out of the normalisation.
The meeting will see officials from Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, the UAE and the US attend. Egypt has diplomatically recognized Israel for decades.
The Holocaust saw Nazi Germany systematically kill 6 million European Jews during World War II.
Israel, founded in 1948 as a haven for Jews in the wake of the Holocaust, grants automatic citizenship to anyone of Jewish descent.
Other Arab nations have refused to diplomatically recognise Israel over its decades-long occupation of land Palestinians want for a future state.
The announcement by the UAE also comes after it and other Arab nations condemned an ultranationalist Israeli Cabinet minister for visiting a flashpoint Jerusalem holy site for the first time since Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new far-right government took office.
The site, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, is the holiest site in Judaism, home to the ancient biblical Temples.
Today, it houses the Al Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam. Since Israel captured the site in 1967, Jews have been allowed to visit but not pray there.

Indians emerged as the biggest winners of the UAE’s leading weekly raffle draw in 2022, news agency PTI reported. 

Among the total 217,000 winners, Indians come first, thanks to the large and repeat participation numbers from within the United Arab Emirates, India and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Indians emerged as the biggest beneficiaries of the UAE&rsquo;s leading weekly raffle draw Mahzooz, which has created 31 multi-millionaires in the last two years, giving away over 350,000,000 dirham in prize money to its winning participants.
Among the total 217,000 winners, Indians come first, thanks to the large and repeat participation numbers from within the United Arab Emirates, India and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
In 2022, Indians participating from several countries, had a sizable share of the win, with a total prize money of 85,000,000 dirham (1.9 billion Indian Rupees). Four of those winners were the lucky receivers of the Mahzooz top prize and became multi-millionaires overnight in 2022.
Incidentally, the first and last millionaires of 2022 were also from India. While Rama walked away with the weekly 10-million dirham prize fund, Dalip turned out to be the lucky solo winner of a promotional pot of 20 million dirham. (The Indian rupee ranged from an average of Rs 20.25 to a single dirham at the start of the year to Rs 22.5 as of December 30.) The first winner with Mahzooz this year was an Indian chef whose fortune has rocketed him to multi-millionaire status during the 66th weekly draw. Rama, a chef who comes from a very modest family, landed the 10,000,000 dirham top prize and is determined to offer his children the education that he never had.
He considers the UAE his lucky charm: &ldquo;Before I came to Dubai, I was working as a private chef in a tour company catering to Indian tourists, so I&rsquo;ve travelled the world. But I decided to come to the UAE because my friends said this is the place where dreams come true&rdquo;.
&ldquo;Even when I was unemployed during the pandemic and when families were prudent about hiring domestic help, I didn&rsquo;t lose hope. There&rsquo;s always light after dark. I can&rsquo;t thank the UAE and Mahzooz enough,&rdquo; says Rama.
Anish was the second winner in 2022, and he too, won the top prize of 10 million dirham.
For the IT professional who works for a private company in Ajman, UAE, he had a sixth sense that gave him a positive feeling that he won something.
&ldquo;Initially I had the feeling that I had won a small amount, but when I logged into my account, I was shocked to see that I was the top prize winner. This is a blessing indeed. I will use the prize money to repay by debts, help family members who are in need and most importantly, bring my family here to the UAE to live with me,&rdquo; says Anish.
Dalip, the latest 2022 Indian winner who lives in Kuwait, became Mahzooz&rsquo;s 30th multi-millionaire, as he took home a life-changing prize of 20 million dirham at the 102nd Mahzooz weekly draw.
The 48-year-old father of three, who works as a mechanical engineer, has been taking part in Mahzooz regularly with the sole intention of winning only the guaranteed raffle draw of 100,000 dirham.
However, he went away with 20,000,000 dirham instead, as part of a limited-time promotion.&nbsp;

On the day that Indian hospitals conducted mock drills to prepare for any possible surge in Covid infections, Air India Express released guidelines for travellers flying from the United Arab Emirates to India.
Air India Express tweeted on 27 December 2022 that it is preferable if passengers are fully vaccinated, use masks, and maintain physical distance during their journey.
The budget airline also asked travellers to monitor their health post arrival and seek medical help if they experience Covid symptoms.
The guidelines added that children under the age of 12 years are exempt from random testing at Indian airports. However, they will be tested if they show symptoms on arrival, or during the period of self-monitoring, the airline said.

GIFT City will be nominated as an agency to import 200 tonnes of gold from the United Arab Emirates under the recently signed Free Trade Agreement said Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, during his visit to Gujarat Saturday.
&ldquo;I have take a decision which profits GIFT City and its expansion. Recently, we signed an FTA with the UAE. This agreement has come into force from May 1 under which almost 100 per cent of items exported to the UAE will go as duty-free. We have also allowed some items to be imported from the UAE with lesser duty. In order to encourage our gem and jewellery sector, 200 tonnes of gold will be brought at discounted rates to India. We will nominate GIFT City as the agency to import the gold,&rdquo; said Goyal during his interaction with media persons at iHub, a student startup and innovation hub in Ahmedabad.
Goyal who had visited GIFT City at Gandhinagar and interacted with officials on Saturday morning said the imported gold will be distributed from GIFT City to other parts of the country.

Piyush Goyal reviewed the functioning of the GIFT special economic zone on Monday.&nbsp;
Gujarat International Finance Tech-city special economic zone is India's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC). It is being developed as a global financial services hub.
It was operationalised by the central government in April 2015. "Held a fruitful interaction with industry representatives at GIFT City. Discussed benefits of setting up units here," Goyal said in a tweet.
The minister also held interactions at the International Bullion Exchange (IIBX) in GIFT City to understand issues with respect to trading of gold; operationalising the gold spot exchange and reducing the cost of gold metal loans for jewellery exporters through the GIFT IFSC.
"Urged representatives of Jewellery sector to discover competitive prices for gold through IIBX," he said.
The minister issued directions to improve the trading of gold on the IIBX, including enabling the utilisation of the TRQ (Tariff Rate Quota) on gold obtained in the trade pact with the UAE.&nbsp;

The minister said trade is still dominated by oil, which constitutes 62 per cent of the overall trade value and only 38 per cent are non-oil trade now. But he expressed hope that CEPA will change this over the years.

The Indo-UAE trade stood at USD 73 billion in FY22, which got a major fillip since the two nations signed the comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) on May 1, 2022. Between FY21 and FY22, the overall trade rose 68 per cent to USD 73 billion, after declining for two years. But the trend has reversed since the signing of CEPA.

Non-oil exports too rose 31 per cent with total value reaching USD 2.7 billion between May and June, junior foreign trade minister of the UAE, Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, told the Indo-UAE economic forum organized by industry lobby CII here.
&ldquo;Though we've set a five-year deadline to take the UAE-India bilateral trade to USD 100 billion from what it is now, going by the way trade has been growing since the signing of the CEPA, I am confident that we'll achieve the target much earlier, say over the next two-three years,&rdquo; Zeyoudi told PTI later during an interaction.
The minister said trade is still dominated by oil, which constitutes 62 per cent of the overall trade value and only 38 per cent are non-oil trade now. But he expressed hope that CEPA will change this over the years.
The minister also said while non-oil trade balance is still in favour of India by a whisker, overall India has a trade deficit of USD 17 billion in FY22, led vastly by large oil imports. During the first half of 2022, bilateral non-oil trade grew 22 per cent to USD 29.5 billion, the minister said.
The UAE minister also said, his country's cumulative investments in India is over USD 20 billion, of which USD 14.4 billion are FDI, making the UAE the eighth largest FDI source for India. In April-June this year, FDI flows into the country from the UAE stood at USD 2.14 billion.
Zeyoudi also said his country is open to invest in the now-stalled West Coast Refinery if India revives the 60-million tonne refinery involving over Rs 3 lakh crore investment.
Addressing another session at the same forum, joint secretary in the commerce ministry Srikar Reddy said, since the CEPA, overall exports from the country to the UAE rose 16 per cent to USD 10.46 billion from USD 9 billion between May and August, which is commendable given the decline in overall global trade during the period.
Reddy also said exports under the CEPA have been outpacing the country's overall exports by 5:1. On the other hand, non-oil exports to the UAE grew 14 per cent.
Reddy said non-oil trade is still dominated by gems &amp; jewellery which constitutes around a third of the total trade, which has grown by 33 per cent to USD 1.4 billion.
Companies from the UAE that have invested in India are Mubadala, DP World, Sharaf Group, Lulu Group, Emaar Properties, RAK Ceramics.

Thousands of UAE residents are making a beeline to get the first glimpse of the new Hindu temple in Dubai after its soft opening earlier this month.
The temple, which will be officially open to the public from October 5 -- the day of the Dussehra festival, welcomes people of all faiths and has allowed entry to worshippers and other visitors for viewing the 16 deities and other interior works, the Gulf News reported on Sunday.
The soft opening of the temple was held on September 1 with the temple management activating the QR-code based appointment booking system via its website.
From day one, the temple has been receiving a large number of visitors, especially over the weekends. The restricted entry has been regulated through QR-coded appointments for crowd management and to ensure social distancing, the report said.
The temple is open from 6.30 am to 8 pm.
Appointments for most weekends till the end of October have already been booked. The booking system will continue till the end of October after which members of the public will be free to visit the temple any time during its opening hours.
The only activity that is currently being done is the chanting of Vedic shlokas by a group of 14 pandits, who have specially come over from India.
This takes place every day from 7.30 am to 11 am and again from 3.30 pm till 8.30 pm. Visitors are allowed to take part in the chants.
Majority of the deities are installed in the main prayer hall that has a large 3D-printed pink lotus unfurling across the central dome.
Located in what is described as the ‘Worship Village’ in Jebel Ali that houses several churches and the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurudwara, the temple has also installed the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Book of the Sikhs, in August.

Gulf Arab countries have asked Netflix to remove &ldquo;offensive content&rdquo; on the streaming service, apparently targeting programmes that feature gay and lesbian characters.
A joint statement issued on behalf of a committee of the Gulf Cooperation Council made the request, saying the unspecified programs &ldquo;contradict Islamic and societal values and principles.&rdquo; Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates each published the statement via their respective governments as well. They, along with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, make up the six-nation council.
Meanwhile, Saudi state television also aired a video of an interview it conducted with a &ldquo;behavioral consultant&rdquo; who described Netflix as being an &ldquo;official sponsor of homosexuality.&rdquo;
Saudi state television also aired a segment suggesting Netflix could be banned in the kingdom over a programme reaching children showing two women embracing each other.
Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
The move comes after countries in the Muslim world in June banned the public showing of Disney's latest animated film &ldquo;Lightyear&rdquo; over a brief moment showing two lesbian characters kissing.
After that, the company's Disney+ streaming service said its &ldquo;content available should align with local regulatory requirements&rdquo; in Gulf Arab countries.
Many Muslims consider gays and lesbians to be sinful. In some parts of the Arab world, members of the LGBTQ community have been arrested and sentenced to prison. Some countries even maintain the death penalty.
The move also comes as regional streaming services try to eat into Netflix's revenue, including the Shahid service operated by the Saudi-owned MBC Group. The Saudi government is believed to hold a controlling stake in MBC Group after a series of arrests in 2017 ordered by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over corruption allegations that saw him centralize power in the kingdom.
Netflix has limited content previously in Saudi Arabia.
In 2019, activists blasted the streaming service for pulling an episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj's &ldquo;Patriot Act&rdquo; that criticized Prince Mohammed over the killing and dismemberment of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, as well as the kingdom's involvement in the war in Yemen.
Netflix at the time said the episode was removed from the kingdom as a result of a legal request from authorities and not due to its content.
