An iconic garland worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the 1930 Dandi March was recently unsold in a UK auction. Despite its historical value, it didn’t meet its guide price. This artifact symbolizes the fight against British colonial rule in India.

The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern.

A tinselled garland presented to and worn by Mahatma Gandhi during the iconic Dandi March of the Indian freedom struggle in 1930 remains open for bids after it failed to meet its GBP 20-30,000 guide price estimate at a UK auction this week.
The garland, in folded paper wrappers inscribed in Gujarati, is said to have been presented as the Salt March passed near the Ahmedabad home of Gandhi&rsquo;s personal physician Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga and was offered by his wife, Nanduben Kanuga. It came up for auction as part of an &lsquo;Islamic and Indian Art&rsquo; sale by Lyon &amp; Turnbull in London on Wednesday.
&ldquo;I am very surprised that the &lsquo;Gandhi Garland&rsquo; did not find a home on the day of the auction,&rdquo; said Kristina Sanne, Head of Sale at the auction house specialising in fine arts and antiques.
&ldquo;That said, we have had quite a lot of interest since the sale and hope to sell it to the highest bidder. It deserves a great home,&rdquo; she said.
The garland is composed of a large teardrop-shaped medallion of pink cloth backed on card, applied with silver and gold thread and sequins in an elaborate decorative pattern. It is edged with gold tinsel, with four smaller rectangular medallions and two triangular medallions similarly decorated and all connected with gold threads to form a necklace.
It passed on through descent from the collection of the late Dr Balvantrai N Kanuga, who along with his wife spent extensive periods at Mahatma Gandhi&rsquo;s Sabarmati Ashram as fellow satyagrahis. An amateur photograph of Gandhi being presented with the garland is inscribed on the reserve to read: &ldquo;Gandhiji Nanduben Kanuga. On the day of Dandi March. At Bungalow 12th March 1930&rdquo;.
The literature with the auction lot states: &ldquo;This garland was presented to Gandhi to mark an auspicious beginning to the Salt March, a major non-violent protest in India in March-April 1930. The Salt March was one of the most successful campaigns in Gandhi&rsquo;s struggle against British rule in India to win equal rights and freedom for Indians.
&ldquo;Starting at his ashram (religious retreat) at Sabarmati (near Ahmedabad), the march reached Dandi after a journey of some 240 miles. On the morning of April 6, Gandhi and his followers picked up handfuls of salt from along the seashore. In so doing, they technically &lsquo;produced&rsquo; salt and broke the law.&rdquo;
A photograph accompanying the garland shows Nanduben Kanuga placing the garland around Gandhi&rsquo;s neck and it is said to have been subsequently returned to the Kanugas after the march.
&ldquo;A few weeks later, Dr Kanuga further contributed to the cause by paying 1600 Rupees for the grains of salt that Gandhi had made at Dandi,&rdquo; reads the footnote.
While the garland remained unsold, the auction attracted fierce bidding for its other highlight lots with a very fine illustration from a Bhagavata Purana series from Punjab going under the hammer for GBP 27,700 - overshooting its estimate of GBP 15-20,000. A group of six Rajput Equestrian Portraits from Rajasthan exceeded their estimate to fetch GBP 20,160 and an album of Kalighat Paintings sold for GBP 21,420.
&ldquo;The Indian Art section saw frantic bidding throughout and was over 90 per cent sold. A real testament to the buoyancy of the Indian Art market,&rdquo; said Sanne.

The UK government on Thursday unveiled a new definition of extremism, as church leaders warned it risked disproportionately affecting Muslim communities.
The new definition comes after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak warned earlier this month of a "shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality" that risked the country tipping into "mob rule".
Sunak's comments, made in a Downing Street address to the nation, came after regular pro-Palestinian protests in London.
The marches protesting Israel's military response to the October 7 attacks by Hamas on southern Israel have seen dozens arrested for anti-Semitic chanting and banners, promoting a proscribed organisation and assaulting emergency workers.
Currently, extremism is defined as "the vocal or active opposition to our fundamental values" such as "mutual respect and tolerance".
According to the new definition, extremism is the "promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance".
Groups or individuals will be regarded as extremist if they use that ideology to "negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others or undermine, overturn or replace the UK's system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights" it said.
They will also be deemed extremist if they "intentionally create a permissive environment for others to achieve" the other two objectives.
The government said in a statement that the new definition was "narrower and more precise" than the earlier 2011 definition.
It said it provided a "high bar that only captures the most concerning of activities. It is not about silencing those with private and peaceful beliefs," it said.
Senior minister Michael Gove, who oversaw the new definition, said it would ensure that government did not "inadvertently provide a platform to those setting out to subvert democracy and deny other people's fundamental rights".
He said Britain was stronger as a result of its diversity "but our democracy and our values of inclusivity and tolerance are under challenge from extremists.
"In order to protect our democratic values, it is important both to reinforce what we have in common and to be clear and precise in identifying the dangers posed by extremism," he added.

The UK braces for a rare climatic event that brings along bone chilling temperatures with it. A Sudden Stratospheric Warning event strikes once every two extended winters, only this time it will hit the country thrice in one season.
Scientists estimate such triple blows happen once in 250 years. Such an event is usually accompanied by heavy snow, ice and strong winds.&nbsp;
Professor Adam Scaife, who works with the UK Met Office, explained that 70% of SSW occurrences are linked to cold snaps. &ldquo;Although this is very rare, we also found that the chance of multiple SSW events is increased,&rdquo; he told the Independent outlet.
&ldquo;The term sudden stratospheric warming refers to what is observed in the stratosphere- a rapid warming between 10 km and 50 km above the earth&rsquo;s surface,&rdquo; the Met Department says.
The phenomenon is not directly observed by humans as it happens nearly 50 kilometers above the ground. However, its impact can be felt on the ground.

Photos posted on social media show crabs getting easy prey as dead starfish wash ashore in large numbers. Authorities said the starfish may have been deposited by rough seas.
Marine Conservation Society member Dr. Angus Jackson told BBC that common starfish may be prone to such deaths. The aquatic creatures can sometimes &ldquo;fold up their arms and roll along the sea floor.
&ldquo;Strandings like this occasionally happen right around our coastline, but this looks to be a particularly large event,&rdquo; he added.
The Thanet District Council also released an advisory after the starfish were spotted.
&ldquo;Members of the public are advised not to attempt to move any stranded sea life and to keep dogs and children away from them, as they may have infectious or transferable diseases,&rdquo; it said.

"Schools are places for children to learn and mobile phones are, at a minimum, an unwanted distraction in the classroom. We are giving our hard-working teachers the tools to take action to help improve behaviour and to allow them to do what they do best, teach," Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, said in a statement.&nbsp;
The Department for Education has published guidance to ensure all schools across England follow the same rules.
The guidance read, "We are determined that all schools should prohibit the use of mobile phones throughout the school day&mdash;not only during lessons but during breaks and lunchtimes as well."
She further added, ''Schools are places for children to learn and mobile phones are, at a minimum, an unwanted distraction in the classroom. We are giving our hard-working teachers the tools to take action to help improve behaviour and to allow them to do what they do best &ndash; teach.''

The UK will introduce legislation to ban disposable e-cigarettes in order to tackle a rise in youth vaping, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was to announce Monday.
"As any parent or teacher knows, one of the most worrying trends at the moment is the rise in vaping among children, and so we must act before it becomes endemic," Sunak said ahead of the official announcement of his plan.
"I am taking bold action to ban disposable vapes -&ndash; which have driven the rise in youth vaping &ndash;- and bring forward new powers to restrict vape flavours, introduce plain packaging and change how vapes are displayed in shops," he added.
The government cited recent figures showing the proportion of vapers under the age of 18 who use disposables has increased almost ninefold in the last two years.
Sunak's government also plans to introduce fines for shops in England and Wales that sell vapes illegally to children.
Health experts welcomed the proposal, with Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty saying the legislation would have "a major public health impact across many future generations".
Sunak last year proposed plans to eventually make the UK a smoke-free nation.
His proposal would make it an offence for anyone born on or after 1 January 2009 to be sold tobacco products &ndash;- effectively raising the smoking age by a year each year until it applies to the whole population, a statement by Sunak's Downing Street office said.
"I propose that in future, we raise the smoking age by one year every year. That means a 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette, and that they and their generation can grow up smoke-free," Sunak told his Conservative Party's annual conference in October.
At present, the purchase age for tobacco products in England and Wales is 18.

The British Prime Minister Rishi arrived on Friday for the G20 Leaders' Summit beginning on Saturday and said he would work with world leaders to address some of the challenges that impact every one of us.
Accompanied by his wife Akshata Murthy, Sunak was welcomed at the airport by Union Minister Ashwini Choubey, British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis and senior diplomats.
"I've landed in Delhi ahead of the G20 summit. I am meeting world leaders to address some of the challenges that impact every one of us. Only together can we get the job done," Sunak said in a post on X.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Sunak and said he was looking forward to a fruitful summit.
"Welcome Rishi Sunak! Looking forward to a fruitful Summit where we can work together for a better planet," Modi said on X.
Sunak is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Modi during his three-day visit.
In an interview to PTI earlier this week, Sunak, the first Indian-origin prime minister of Britain, said the relationship between the UK and India will define the future of the two countries, even more than it is defining the present.&nbsp;

Dozens of flights were cancelled at Heathrow, Europe&rsquo;s busiest air hub, which warned of &ldquo;knock-on impacts.&rdquo; At least 32 departures from Heathrow were cancelled on Tuesday, and 31 arrivals were axed.

The Commons Privileges Committee released its final report into the Partygate scandal days after Johnson, 58, resigned from Parliament as a MP, accusing the members of the committee of a "witch hunt" against him.
Finding him in breach of the Commons rules, the committee was also highly critical of his attacks on its integrity and recommended a suspension of 90 days from Parliament had he not resigned.
&ldquo;We have concluded above that in deliberately misleading the House Mr Johnson committed a serious contempt. The contempt was all the more serious because it was committed by the Prime Minister, the most senior member of the government,&rdquo; the Privileges Committee report concludes.
&ldquo;Although Mr Johnson&rsquo;s resignation as an MP renders it impossible for a sanction of suspension to be imposed, we draw attention to the fact that before the events of Friday 9 June, we had provisionally agreed to recommend a suspension long enough to engage the provisions of the Recall of MPs Act," it says, with reference to Johnson's resignation.
The committee notes that there is no precedent for a British Prime Minister having been found to have deliberately misled the House of Commons and also that Johnson misled it on an issue of the &ldquo;greatest importance to the House and to the public, and did so repeatedly&rdquo;.
They accuse Johnson of committing further contempts in his attacks on the due parliamentary process with deprecated terms such as &ldquo;witch hunt&rdquo; and &ldquo;kangaroo court&rdquo;.
&ldquo;We put on record that if he had not resigned his seat, we would have recommended that he be suspended from the service of the House for 90 days for repeated contempts and for seeking to undermine the parliamentary process, by &ndash; Deliberately misleading the House; Deliberately misleading the Committee; Breaching confidence; Impugning the Committee and thereby undermining the democratic process of the House; Being complicit in the campaign of abuse and attempted intimidation of the Committee," the report concludes.
Johnson issued another strongly-worded statement in response, saying it was a &ldquo;dreadful day&rdquo; for democracy.
&ldquo;This is a dreadful day for MPs and for democracy. This decision means that no MP is free from vendetta, or expulsion on trumped-up charges by a tiny minority who want to see him or her gone from the Commons.
"I do not have the slightest contempt for Parliament, or for the important work that should be done by the Privileges Committee,&rdquo; he said.
The former prime minister, whose exit from 10 Downing Street last year had been hastened by the Partygate scandal, repeatedly denied Covid-19 lockdown rules were broken within government quarters when asked in the Commons.
In March, the House of Commons Privileges Committee published a summary of its findings and called in Johnson to give oral evidence before decisively concluding whether he knowingly misled Parliament and submitting its complete findings to Parliament.
Last week, Johnson resigned as Conservative Party MP after receiving the draft findings of the final report, a move which will trigger a by-election in his London constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip.&nbsp;

British police investigating a &ldquo;serious incident&rdquo; in the central England city of Nottingham, where a man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday after three people were found dead, have said they are keeping an &ldquo;open mind&rdquo; over the motive and working alongside counter-terrorism police.
Nottinghamshire Police said they do not believe there is anyone else involved in the incident, which also left three people injured and hospitalised &ndash; one of whom is in critical condition.
The chief of the force said they are at the early stages of the investigation and need to determine the motives behind the &ldquo;horrific and tragic&rdquo; series of events before releasing further information.
&ldquo;We are keeping an open mind as we investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are working alongside Counter Terrorism Policing to establish the facts &ndash; as we would normally do in these types of circumstances,&rdquo; said Chief Constable Kate Meynell.
&ldquo;We do have a man in custody who has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Currently, we do not believe there is anyone else involved in this incident," Meynell said.
"It is safe to go into the city centre, but there are a number of streets that will remain closed, including Ilkeston Road, Magdala Street, Milton Street and Maple Street. This is so officers can gather evidence in order to understand what has happened,&rdquo; she added.
Earlier, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he is monitoring developments as a 31-year-old man was arrested as a series of attacks unfolded on Tuesday.
Two people were found dead on one street in Nottingham city centre, around 200km north of London, and the third victim was found dead on another street of the city in the early hours of Tuesday. In the third incident, a white van attempted to run over three people on a different street nearby, and those three victims remain in a hospital after suffering injuries.
