Bangladesh violence: Hindu councillor shot dead; ISKCON, Kali temples attacked

A Hindu councillor of Rangpur City Corporation was among the victims of violent anti-quota protests in Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi paper The Daily Star, the deceased, Haradhan Roy Hara, was a leader of the Parshuram Thana Awami League. Bengali-language newspaper Prothom Alo reported that six Awami League leaders and activists were beaten to death and several others injured in Narsingdi.

Casualties mount as thousands of protesters, demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, clash with ruling party supporters in different parts of the country.

Several homes and Hindu places of worship, including ISKCON and Kali temples, have been attacked. More than 300 people, a majority of them protesters, have been killed in the violence in the past few weeks.

According to the police headquarters, 14 policemen were among the casualties. 13 were killed in Sirajganj's Enayetpur police station, while one was killed in Comilla's Elliotganj. The government has ordered the shutdown of Meta platforms Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram in a bid to contain the violence.
