Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence algorithm to track the movement of Thwaites Glacier whose size has drastically fluctuated in recent times.

Researchers have found that size of the glacier, which is also known as 'doomsday glacier' has both squeezed and stretched in the last 6 years. A team of scientists found that crevasse formation and the movement of ice flow has moved back and forth from 4 km a year to 6 km before slowing down again.

According to glaciologist Dr. Anna Hogg, "The study demonstrates the key role that fractures play in un-corking the flow of ice, a process known as unbuttressing."

A study published in Nature Geoscience revealed that AI is now being used to spot cracks formations in the glacier as a result of climate change. This will help scientists to accurately keep a track of changes in the iceberg.

The target area for research has been the point where the ice flows into the sea and begins floating.
