Maldives Foreign Minister visits India, says derogatory remarks 'won't happen again'

MEA India welcomed Zameer saying, "Discussions on bilateral & regional issues and seeking ways to provide impetus to our multifaceted relationship lie ahead."

Maldives Foreign Minister visits India, says derogatory remarks 'won't happen again'

Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, who is on his first official visit to India, has distanced his government from the derogatory remarks made by some of its ministers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that it was not the stand of the government and that "proper action" has been taken to ensure that it is not repeated

In an interview with ANI, Maldivian Foreign Minister Zameer reiterated the government's stance, stating, "I think if you have seen, like you said, we have said that it's not the stand of the government or it's not the view of the government. And we believe it shouldn't have been done. And then we are taking proper action to make sure that this don't repeat."

The row between India and the Maldives broke out over derogatory posts made by three officials about PM Modi.

Heavily Trolled for India visit

After reaching in New Delhi, Zameer posted on X, “Arrived in New Delhi on my first bilateral official visit to India! Looking forward to productive discussions, strengthening ties, and experiencing the vibrant culture of #India."

However, he did not receive a warn welcome as many Indians trolled him claiming the visit was not for ‘mutual benefits,’ but rather for ‘unilateral benefits’.

An X user replied to his post saying, “One correction sir: it’s unilateral benefit of Maldives’s people.”

“I hope the first thing you’ll do is apologise on behalf of your government and president," posted another.

A third user wrote, “Indians are done with you and your leadership who destroyed the age long relationship."
