US judge charged with attempted murder for shooting ex-boyfriend while he slept

An American judge who allegedly shot her ex-boyfriend in the head while he was sleeping has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and aggravated assault, the New York Post reported.

According to court documents, the incident happened on February 9 in Pennsylvania after the victim, Michael McCoy, tried to break up with Magisterial District Judge Sonya McKnight.

The police mentioned in their arrest affidavit that McCoy tried to end their one-year relationship and get the judge to move out of his hoouse several times.

On the night of the incident, McKnight had reportedly agreed to move out. The duo went to sleep around 11 pm. McCoy said that he woke by sometime later due to a 'massive head pain'. He couldn't see anything from his right eye.

The police said that McKnight then came to his room and asked 'Mike, what did you do to yourself?'.

The affidavit says a gun registered to the judge was found at the scene and the police found gunshot residue on her hands.
