The United States and Britain have warned their citizens to stay away from the Serena Hotel in Kabul, citing "security threats".

The warning comes days after over 50 people were killed in an explosion at a mosque packed with worshippers for Friday prayers in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz. The Islamic State group had claimed the attack.

The US State Department asked the US citizens at or near Serena Hotel to "leave immediately", while, the UK Foreign Office in a statement highlighted the increased risk, and recommended their citizens not to stay in hotels, particularly the Serena hotel in Kabul.

The Serena is Kabul's most well-known luxury hotel, and it was popular with international guests before the Taliban's takeover of the city almost two months ago.
