Paneer is an excellent source of protein and forms a major part of an Indian diet. From matar paneer to paneer bhurji, many paneer dishes are regularly made at home. However, food adulteration has become rampant in the country. In the last few years, the government has cracked down on many factories making and selling adulterated paneer.

So, next time you head to the market to buy paneer, here are some tips that will help you recognise fake paneer from real paneer.

      How to recognise fake paneer?

      See the texture

Authentic paneer as opposed to fake paneer is soft and breaks easily. Synthethic paneer often appears rubbery and overly smooth. Make sure to check the next time you go to buy paneer.

      Smell

Before buying, smell your paneer. Genuine paneer has a mild, milky aroma. On the other hand, synthetic paneer might lack the milky aroma and instead emit a chemical scent.

      Taste

Real paneer has a clean, milky flavour, while synthetic versions may taste artificial.

      Check moisture content

Real paneer has a higher moisture content, releasing whey when pressed. Synthetic paneer tends to be drier.

      Real paneer turns brown

When cooking the paneer if it turns brown and holds its shape it is real paneer.

Harmful side effects of having synthetic paneer

Consuming synthetic paneer can lead to stomach upset, diarrhoea, vomiting, and nausea, according to a report by Indian Experts. In the long run, it may affect your liver and kidneys.
