The world is shocked after the news of Poonam Pandey's death was shared by her team on Instagram. The actor lost the battle with cervical cancer and passed away at the mere age of 32. Poonam was known for her many controversies and was even seen on Kangana Ranaut-hosted 'Lock Upp'.

Cervical cancer is the cancer of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. When cervical cancer is first detected, it is treated with surgery to remove the cancer. Let us learn more about it.

What is cervical cancer and what are the causes?

Cervical cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the cervix. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina.

The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. Most cases of cervical cancer are associated with the human papillomavirus. Tobacco use also increases the risk of cervical cancer.

What are the signs and symptoms?

While the early stages of cervical cancer may go undetected, the common signs of cervical cancer are vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, and foul smelling vaginal discharge.

What does the expert have to say?

We at Editorji spoke to Kolkata-based gynecologist Dr. Lakshmi Raman who spoke to us in details about the possible treatments available for cervical cancer. She told us, "Treatment of cervical cancer depends on the staging of the cancer. Usually in the earlier stages it is a combination of radical surgery with Radiation or Chemotherapy. Later stages are generally managed with radiation, chemotherapy and Immunotherapy."

"While there is no sure shot way to avoid the cancer, regular PAP smear tests, test for HPV, taking HPV vaccination and regular use of condoms."

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1 also announced the government's initiative to promote cervical cancer vaccination among girls aged 9 to 14.

      Poonam Pandey's team statement

Poonam's team took to Instagram and wrote,"This morning is a tough one for us. Deeply saddened to inform you that we have lost our beloved Poonam to cervical cancer. Every living form that ever came in contact with her was met with pure love and kindness. In this time of grief, we would request for privacy while we remember her fondly for all that we shared."

Please Note: Poonam Pandey is alive and well; there is no truth to the reported death or the claim of cervical cancer.
