Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is most evident during infancy or childhood. This type of disorder leads to poor speech, non-verbal communication, repetitive behaviour and impaired social skills. In India, there are more than 10 million children who suffer from this disorder.

According to research, diet plays an important role in treating this disorder. Read on to know the dietary requirements of children suffering from autism.

      Include Gluten-free food

Children with autism are unable to easily digest gluten and dairy products. This is because gluten and casein in dairy products can damage the gut. Therefore, dairy products like milk and gluten foods like wheat, rye, barley, etc. should be avoided.

Include Vitamin C and Zinc in the diet

Foods rich in zinc and Vitamin C help in improving digestion. Vitamin C-rich foods include oranges, kiwis, grapes, tomatoes, papayas, broccoli and strawberries, whereas foods rich in zinc include eggs, pulses, etc.

      Include Omega-3 fatty acids

According to studies, consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids can help in treating autism by repairing the neurological nerves. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids include walnuts, chia seeds, soy and fish oil.

      Use probiotics

To improve digestive issues that are pretty common in children with autism, include probiotics such as curd and paneer in your diet.

      Avoid sugary food items

Food items that are rich in sugar can lead to increased blood sugar levels. Children with autism should eat foods that have low sugar content.
