US President Trump escalates trade war with China by imposing 104% tariffs, triggering market sell-offs and global economic fears.

US President Donald Trump's punishing tariffs on dozens of economies came in force Wednesday, including over 100 percent in levies against Chinese goods, dramatically ramping up a devastating global trade war.
Following the imposition of sweeping 10 percent tariffs have rocked the global economy since coming into force over the weekend, rates on imports to the United States from exporters like the European Union or Japan rose further at 12.01 am (0401 GMT) Wednesday.
China -- Washington's top economic rival but also a major trading partner -- is the hardest hit, with tariffs imposed on its products since Trump returned to the White House now reaching a staggering 104 percent.
Trump said Tuesday his government was working on "tailored deals" with trading partners, with the White House saying it would prioritize allies like Japan and South Korea.
His top trade official Jamieson Greer also told the Senate that Argentina, Vietnam and Israel were among those who had offered to reduce their tariffs.
Trump told a dinner with fellow Republicans on Tuesday night that countries were "dying" to make a deal.
"I'm telling you, these countries are calling us up kissing my ass," he said.
But Beijing has shown no signs of standing down, vowing to fight a trade war "to the end" and promising countermeasures to defend its interests.
China's retaliatory tariffs of 34 percent on US goods are due to enter in force on Thursday.
The US president believes his policy will revive America's lost manufacturing base by forcing companies to relocate to the United States.
But many business experts and economists question how quickly -- if ever -- this can take place, warning of higher inflation as the tariffs raise prices.
Trump said Tuesday the United States was "taking in almost $2 billion a day" from tariffs.
- China 'wants to make a deal' -
He originally unveiled a 34 percent additional tariff on Chinese goods.
But after China countered with its own tariff of the same amount on American products, Trump piled on another 50 percent duty.
Counting existing levies imposed in February and March, that would take the cumulative tariff increase for Chinese goods during Trump's second presidency to 104 percent.
Trump has insisted the ball was in China's court, saying Beijing "wants to make a deal, badly, but they don't know how to get it started."
Late Tuesday, Trump also said the United States would announce a major tariff on pharmaceuticals "very shortly".

After trillions in equity value were wiped off global bourses in the last days, markets in Asia opened down again on Wednesday, with Hong Kong plunging more than three percent and Japan's Nikkei sinking 2.7 percent.

Oil prices slumped, with the West Texas Intermediate closing below $60 for the first time since April 2021.
The European Union has sought to cool tensions, with the bloc's chief Ursula von der Leyen warning against worsening the trade conflict in a call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
She stressed stability for the world's economy, alongside "the need to avoid further escalation," said an EU readout.
The Chinese premier told von der Leyen that his country could weather the storm, saying it "is fully confident of maintaining sustained and healthy economic development."
The EU -- which Trump has criticized bitterly over its tariff regime -- may unveil its response next week to new 20 percent levies it faces.
In retaliation against US steel and aluminum levies that took effect last month, the EU plans tariffs of up to 25 percent on American goods ranging from soybeans to motorcycles, according to a document seen by AFP.

Wall Street's major indices closed lower Tuesday, with the broad-based S&amp;P 500 falling 1.6 percent.
In one public sign of friction over tariffs, key Trump ally Elon Musk described senior White House trade advisor Peter Navarro as "dumber than a sack of bricks."
Musk, who has signaled his opposition to Trump's trade policy, hit out after Navarro described his Tesla company as "a car assembler" that wants cheap foreign parts.

Stock markets rebounded sharply on Tuesday, a day after facing the worst drubbing in 10 months, as benchmark Sensex recouped 1,089 points after across-the-board value buying amid firm Asian and European markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 1,089.18 points or 1.49 per cent to settle at 74,227.08 with 29 of its components ending in the green. During the day, it climbed 1,721.49 points or 2.35 per cent to 74,859.39.
The NSE Nifty surged 374.25 points or 1.69 per cent to 22,535.85. Intra-day, the benchmark soared 535.6 points or 2.41 per cent to 22,697.20.
Sensex tanked 2,226.79 points or 2.95 per cent and Nifty tumbled 742.85 points or 3.24 per cent, marking their worst single day decline in 10 months as global equity markets went into a tailspin on recession fears after US tariff war.
On Tuesday, all Sensex firms, except Power Grid, ended in the positive territory. Titan, Bajaj Finance, State Bank of India, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Axis Bank, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints and Zomato were the biggest gainers.
World markets also staged a comeback after Monday's collapse.
In Asian markets, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, Shanghai SSE Composite index and South Korea's Kospi settled in the positive territory after falling sharply on Monday. Nikkei 225 index jumped 6 per cent.
European markets were quoting higher. US markets ended mostly lower on Monday.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 9,040.01 crore on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 12,122.45 crore, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.22 per cent to USD 64.35 a barrel.
Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty logged their worst single-day decline in 10 months on Monday, as fears that Trump's policies on reciprocal tariffs may lead to recession and higher inflation in the US going ahead unnerved investors.&nbsp;

Stock markets rebounded sharply in early trade on Tuesday after facing massive drubbing in the previous session, following a recovery in Asian peers and across the board buying.
Bouncing back from a maniac Monday that left investors shell-shocked, the 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex jumped 1,283.75 points or 1.75 per cent to 74,421.65 in early trade. The NSE Nifty surged 415.95 points or 1.87 per cent to 22,577.55.
All Sensex firms, except Tata Consultancy Services, were trading in the positive territory. Titan, Adani Ports, Bajaj Finserv, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement, Larsen &amp; Toubro and Tata Steel were the biggest gainers.
Tata Consultancy Services quoted marginally lower.
In Asian markets, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, South Korea's Kospi and Shanghai SSE Composite index were trading in the positive territory after falling sharply on Monday. Nikkei 225 index jumped over 5 per cent.
US markets ended mostly lower on Monday.
Global markets may face heightened volatility amid a fresh threat by the US to impose a punitive 50 per cent tariff against China's retaliatory 34 per cent import levies on American products, experts said.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 9,040.01 crore on Monday, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought shares worth Rs 12,122.45 crore, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 1.32 per cent to USD 65.06 a barrel.
On Monday, the Sensex crashed 2,226.79 points or 2.95 per cent to settle at 73,137.90. During the day, the index slumped 3,939.68 points or 5.22 per cent to 71,425.01.
The Nifty tumbled 742.85 points or 3.24 per cent to settle at 22,161.60. Intra-day, the benchmark dropped 1,160.8 points or 5.06 per cent to 21,743.65.&nbsp;

The government had announced plans to sell its stake in LIC last year but it got delayed by legal and administrative hurdles, the report said.
The government also plans stake sales in IDBI Bank,&nbsp;Central Bank of India&nbsp;and Punjab &amp; Sind Bank, as per the report.
Together, the plan is to raise up to ₹3 lakh&nbsp;crore&nbsp;in the next financial year, partly to set off the shortfall in the proceeds this year.

Global stocks surged as Donald Trump paused tariffs on most nations for 90 days, lifting market sentiment, even as he raised duties on China to 125 percent.

Asian stocks rocketed Thursday as investors breathed a huge sigh of relief after Donald Trump announced a pause on crippling tariffs on US partners, with Chinese markets even brushing off his decision to ramp up duties on Beijing to 125 percent.
Equities surged across the board, tracking a blistering performance on Wall Street, after the US president said he would delay for 90 days measures announced last week that set off a firestorm on trading floors and sparked warnings of a global recession.
Trump said he would keep in place a basic levy of 10 percent on dozens of countries but upped the ante in his brutal trade war with superpower rival China by hitting it even harder after it retaliated in kind at the weekend.
Trump made the decision because he said investors were "jumping a little bit out of line" as markets collapsed and US Treasuries -- considered the safest option in times of crisis -- were also showing signs of cracking on concerns about the world's top economy.
People "were getting yippy, a little bit afraid", he added, referring to a term in sports to describe a loss of nerves.
The extra tariffs on Beijing, however, were "based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the world's markets", Trump said.
The president denied he had made a U-turn, telling reporters that "you have to be flexible".
Asian traders welcomed the move, ramping up equities throughout the region.
Hong Kong rallied more than four percent -- a third day of gains after collapsing more than 13 percent on Monday in its worst day since 1997 during the Asian financial crisis. Shanghai gained more than one percent.
The two markets have been given extra support by optimism that Chinese officials will unveil fresh stimulus to support the economy in light of the tariff measures.
Official data showing another drop in consumer prices last month added to those hopes.
 - 'Fear to euphoria' -
Tokyo's Nikkei surged more than eight percent, Seoul and Singapore each piled on more than five percent, and Sydney and Jakarta more than four percent.
Taipei's 9.3-percent gain was its best rise on record -- after Monday's 9.7-percent drop represented its worst fall.
Shares in Vietnam, which was facing some of the heftiest tariffs, jumped 6.5 percent, while Manila and Wellington were also deep in the green.
Tech firms were the standout performers, with Sony, Sharp, Panasonic and SoftBank chalking up double-digit gains, while airlines, car makers and casinos also enjoyed strong buying.
Apple suppliers posted blockbuster rallies -- Hong Kong-listed AAC Technologies surged 23 percent and in Taiwan, Hon Hai added almost 10 percent.
"Asia markets are flipping the switch -- from fear to euphoria -- as Trump throws a 90-day lifeline, pausing the reciprocal tariff barrage," said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management.
"The president's post nodded to the 'yippy' reaction to his historic hikes, and honestly, that sums it up.
"We just witnessed one of the all-time bouncebacks -- and now, we look for Asia investors, much like their North American counterparts, to step in and buy the 'yips'."
US Treasury yields also edged down, after a successful auction of $38 billion in notes, said Briefing.com.
That eased pressure on the bond market, which had fanned worries that investors were losing confidence in the United States.
The tumult caused by Trump's trade war is also causing a headache for the US Federal Reserve as it tries to decide whether to cut interest rates to protect the economy, or keep them elevated to ward off the inflation many say tariffs will fuel.
Minutes from the central bank's March meeting, released Wednesday, showed members were concerned that "the announced or planned tariff increases were larger and broader than many of their business contacts had expected".
That was before the president unveiled his widespread duties of up to 50 percent on friend and foe -- now paused until July.
Some decision-makers noted that they "may face difficult tradeoffs if inflation proved to be more persistent while the outlook for growth and employment weakened", the minutes showed.
Oil prices edged down after a much-needed bounce of more than four percent on Wednesday. Still, both main contracts remain under pressure amid concerns about the global economy and its impact on demand.
Gold also rallied around two percent, while bitcoin put on more than six percent.

US President Donald Trump abruptly paused tariffs on most countries, sparking euphoria on global markets Thursday, but upped the ante on a brutal trade war with superpower rival China.
After days of turmoil, stocks on Wall Street and across Asia saw huge surges in reaction to Trump's announcement that he was halting a levy hike for almost all nations for 90 days.
But Trump also said he was raising tariffs on China to 125 percent because of a "lack of respect."
Beijing hit back with retaliatory tariffs of 84 percent on US imports, which came into effect at 12:01 pm (0401 GMT) on Thursday, the latest salvo in an escalating standoff between the world's two largest economies.
Trump has denied that he backtracked on the tariffs, telling reporters that "you have to be flexible."
"People were jumping a little bit out of line, they were getting yippy, a little bit afraid," Trump said. "Yippy" is a term in sports to describe a loss of nerves.
He said he had been watching the "very tricky" state of the crucial US bonds market before his decision.
"I saw last night where people were getting a little queasy," he said, as US bond yields rose during the stocks sell-off -- a major economic red light as American sovereign government debt is normally seen as a safe haven for investors in troubled times.
Trump also predicted that trade deals will be made with all countries, including China, which has for now refused to roll back retaliatory tariffs on US goods.
"A deal's going to be made with China. A deal's going to be made with every one of them," Trump said, adding however that China's leaders "don't quite know how to go about it."
Trump also said that he "can't imagine" increasing Chinese tariffs more than he has.
 - China duel -
Markets have been on a rollercoaster ride since Trump's announcement of sweeping global tariffs one week ago on what he called "Liberation Day" before his dramatic pause on Wednesday.
Trump had imposed 10 percent baseline tariffs on all countries which came into effect on Saturday, and higher rates on key trading partners such as China and the European Union that he accused of cheating the United States, which activated on Wednesday.
But as markets swayed yet again, Trump said in a surprise announcement on his Truth Social network that "I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE" on the higher tariffs, while the baseline 10 percent would remain.
He said that he took the decision after more than 75 countries reached out to negotiate and did not retaliate.
Japan -- which had been slapped with 24 percent under the so-called reciprocal tariffs -- said it welcomed the news but still "strongly" demanded that Washington reconsider other levies on its steel and auto exports.
The European Union had earlier launched its own counterattack, announcing measures targeting some US products from next week in retaliation for American duties on global steel and aluminum exports.
The 27-nation bloc will hit more than 20 billion euros' worth of US products, including soybeans, motorcycles and beauty products.
But the EU notably did not retaliate against the separate "Liberation Day" tariffs of 20 percent that came into effect on Wednesday.
 - 'BE COOL!' -
Wall Street stocks rocketed on Trump's pause announcement.
The S&amp;P 500 surged 9.5 percent to 5,456.90, snapping a brutal run of losses over the past week.
Markets in Asia also rallied Thursday, with Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei, Australia, Indonesia and Singapore sharply higher.
Stocks in Chinese economic powerhouse Shanghai were also up, despite Trump's decision to further hike tariffs.
Before his pivot, Trump said world leaders were rushing to negotiate "tailored" deals with the United States, with Japan and South Korea among those sending delegations to Washington.
"I'm telling you, these countries are calling us up kissing my ass," Trump told a dinner with fellow Republicans on Tuesday night.
Trump believes his policy will revive America's lost manufacturing base by forcing companies to relocate to the United States.
The billionaire former property tycoon has particularly raged against China, accusing it of excess production and "dumping" inexpensive goods on other economies.
With the trade war between the world's two biggest economies showing little signs of abating, China told tourists on Wednesday to "fully assess the risks" before travelling to the United States.
Separately, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned against Chinese "threats" as he visited Panama, whose canal is at the center of a row between Beijing and Washington.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty closed lower on Wednesday in line with losses in global markets amid escalating trade tensions, even as the Reserve Bank cut policy rates for a second consecutive time as it sought to bolster the economy in the face of further pressure from damaging US tariffs.
The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 379.93 points or 0.51 per cent to settle at 73,847.15. During the day, it slumped 554.02 points or 0.74 per cent to a low of 73,673.06.
The NSE Nifty declined 136.70 points or 0.61 per cent to 22,399.15. Intra-day, it tanked 182.6 points or 0.81 per cent to 22,353.25.
Mirroring weak trends in Asian equities, domestic key equity indices opened lower and remained in the negative territory throughout the session after the US imposed a fresh set of tariffs, including a whopping 104 per cent levy on Chinese imports.
"Global financial markets are witnessing renewed selling pressure following the enactment of reciprocal tariffs. A trade war is escalating global risk, with a rise in US bond yields prompting a sell-off in the world's safe treasury assets. In India, a cut in the repo rate, along with an accommodative policy stance, is taken as a constructive step.
"However, it has done little to uplift overall market sentiment, as the world is embracing recessionary risk," Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.
State Bank of India, Tech Mahindra, Larsen &amp; Toubro, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Infosys, HCL Tech, Axis Bank, Tata Consultancy Services and NTPC were among the biggest laggards among Sensex shares.
Nestle, Hindustan Unilever, Titan, Power Grid, UltraTech Cement and ITC were among the gainers.
In Asian markets, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index and South Korea's Kospi settled lower while Shanghai SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended higher. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index dropped nearly 4 per cent.
Markets in Europe were trading sharply lower. US markets ended significantly lower on Tuesday.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cut interest rates on Wednesday for a second consecutive time and signalled more easing to come as it sought to bolster the economy in the face of further pressure from damaging US tariffs.
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), consisting of three central bank members and an equal number of external members, voted unanimously to cut the repurchase or repo rate by 25 basis points to 6 per cent. It had reduced rates by an equal measure in February -- the first cut since May 2020.
RBI changed its policy stance to "accommodative" from "neutral", indicating the possibility of more rate cuts in future, Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, announcing the MPC decisions.
The rate cut came on a day when the full 26 per cent additional tariffs on Indian goods exported to the US came into effect.
RBI also lowered its estimate for economic growth to 6.5 per cent for 2025-26 from 6.7 per cent earlier. The inflation projection was also lowered to 4 per cent from 4.2 per cent, keeping it within the target range of 2-6 per cent.
"Markets slipped after a brief rebound, losing over half a per cent as the choppy trend persisted. Sentiment took a hit following the announcement of fresh US tariffs on China, leading to a gap-down opening and a largely range-bound session thereafter. The outcome of the MPC meeting&mdash;where a 25 bps rate cut was announced along with a shift to an accommodative stance&mdash;failed to evoke any meaningful market reaction," Ajit Mishra &ndash; SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 4,994.24 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude dropped 4.23 per cent to USD 60.16 a barrel.
After Monday's drubbing, the BSE benchmark jumped 1,089.18 points or 1.49 per cent to settle at 74,227.08 on Tuesday. The Nifty surged 374.25 points or 1.69 per cent to 22,535.85.
