HC reports says oxygen shortage killed 36 in Karnataka hospital, Dy CM denies

A committee constituted by the Karnataka High Court has found that 36 patients died in Chamarajanagar district hospital due to a lack of oxygen during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Report of State Level Monitoring Committee revealed that out of 62 deaths declared by the district hospital between May 4 and May 10, 36 people died due to non-availability of oxygen on the intervening night of May 2 and May 3.

However, Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwathnarayan denied the findings of the report and said oxygen shortage did not lead to the deaths, adding logistical issues and negligence of that institution cannot be reflected as oxygen shortage.

He further said inquiry is going on to find whether it was because of shortage of oxygen or negligence.
