Maharashtra reconciles delayed data, Covid deaths increase by 8,800

Maharashtra's Covid-19 death toll has increased by 8,800 and reached 1.08 lakhs after the state carried out a reconciliation exercise in the past 12 days to reflect delayed numbers.

A statement issued by the state govt said that deaths were being reported with a delay from Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Nashik, Aurangabad, Ahmednagar, and Yavatmal.

The statement added that Pune, Thane and Nagpur reported an increase of 1,368, 1,167, and 503 fatalities respectively

Lack of a proper system in districts to update real-time data and shortage of manpower have been cited as two reasons for the delay in numbers.

Earlier this week, Bihar's Covid death toll shot up by 3,951 after it revised its number to reflect delayed data and it led to India reporting 6,148 deaths - the highest number of daily fatalities since the pandemic started.
