UN chief: will seek to unite world, reverse Myanmar coup

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pledged on Friday that the world body will do everything it can to unite the international community and create conditions for the military coup in Myanmar to be reversed.

The UN chief said that it is “absolutely essential” to carry out the Security Council's calls for a return to democracy. He added that the results of the November parliamentary elections must be respected, and all people detained by the military be released, “which means the reversal of the coup that took place.”

Myanmar military detained country's leader Suu Kyi, whose party swept the November vote, alleging election fraud. It also cracked down on other lawmakers, activists, journalists and members of civil society. The election commission had refuted the military's allegations.
