Apple faces hurdles in India: Exemption request for older iPhones from USB-C mandate

With the launch of iPhone 15, Apple transitions to the USB Type-C port due to the EU's mandate. Now, Apple is requesting an exemption for older models in India, where a similar rule is proposed, to safeguard its production goals.

Apple faces hurdles in India: Exemption request for older iPhones from USB-C mandate

Recently, Apple launched the iPhone 15 series, making a notable change by including the USB Type-C port. This was a significant shift as it was the first time an iPhone didn't have Apple's own lightning port.

This change wasn't entirely Apple's decision but was influenced by a new rule from the European Union (EU). This rule requires electronics to have USB-C ports. Now, India is considering a similar rule, and Apple is concerned about it.

Apple's Challenge with India's Universal Charging Port Rules

Similar to the EU, the Indian government wants all electronic devices sold in the country, including the existing models, to have USB Type-C charging ports.

The idea is to make things easier for users and to reduce electronic waste. But this new rule in India is causing issues for Apple, especially regarding their older iPhone models.

Exemption Plea for Older iPhones and Production Concerns

In a recent meeting with India's IT ministry, Apple asked for an exemption for its older iPhone models from the new USB Type-C rule. According to a report by Reuters, Apple is worried that if older iPhones are not exempted, it could affect its Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

This scheme is important for Apple as it offers financial incentives for increasing electronic manufacturing and sales in India.

The Deadline Dilemma and Impact on Sales

Apple has also requested to delay the deadline for implementing the new charging port rule, currently set for June 2025. This deadline is six months after the EU's similar rule takes effect. Apple says it needs about 18 months more than planned, beyond 2024, to comply with these regulations if older iPhones are not exempted.

Older iPhones and Their Importance in India

Apple's concern is understandable because older iPhones are quite popular in India. Many Indian consumers prefer buying older, more affordable models when new versions are released. The Indian ministry is now reviewing Apple's request and will decide later.

Apple's Production Goals in India

Recently, it was reported that Apple aims to reach a Rs 1 lakh crore iPhone production target by the end of FY24. In the first seven months, the company has already produced iPhones worth over Rs 60,000 crore. Interestingly, about 70% of these iPhones made in India are sold in international markets. This production target is crucial for Apple as it represents a significant part of its global sales.
