Only the iconic Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have won Major titles for India in men's tennis while trailblazer Sania Mirza did it in women's tennis.
For Bopanna it is his second Grand Slam title, having won the French Open mixed doubles with Canada's Gabriela Dabrowski in 2017.
At 43, Bopanna also became the oldest Grand Slam champion in men's tennis. He bettered the record of Jean-Julien Rojer who, at age of 40, had lifted the French Open men's doubles trophy in 2022 with Marcelo Arevola.
It was such hard-fought battle at the Rod Laver arena that the contest featured only one break of serve when Vavassori dropped his serve at love in game 11 of the second set. There were not many break points on offer either.
The second seeds had breakpoints in successive games in the beginning of the contest. However, the Italians saved both to stay on even terms.
In game two, off Bolelli's serve, Vavassori hit a volley at 30-30 but Bopanna hit a return long.
In game four, the Italians were again down a break point when at 30-30, a return from Bopanna jumped off the net chord to give the second seeds a free point. However, Vavassori served well to save that point as well.
Serving 4-5, and 30-all, Bolelli was under pressure again but pulled off a powerful cross court forehand which was away from Bopanna's reach and then served huge to make it 5-all.
Ebden's serve came under pressure in game 11 in which he faced a breakpoint, but, after playing deuce points, the Australian closed the game with an ace.
In the tie-breaker, Bolelli's serve was broken twice as the second seeds zoomed to a 5-0 lead without losing a point on their serve.
Vavassori too lost his serve to hand their rivals six set points. They converted the first, Ebden finding a forehand winner down the line.
Bopanna will be crowned the new number one on Monday when the ATP rankings will be updated. At 43, he will be the oldest player to be perched on top of the ranking pile.
Bolelli had won the Australian Open men's doubles in 2015 with partner Fabio Fognini.

After giving Zheng a breakpoint chance, she bounced the ball away behind her in disgust but she recovered her composure to win the next three points.
In the end, she needed five championship points before finishing off with a forehand crosscourt winner. It was the kind of shot that had kept Zheng on the back foot almost from the start.
The 25-year-old Sabalenka improved to two wins in three Grand Slam finals, all in a span of 13 months. She beat Elena Rybakina a year ago for the title in Australia.
Sabalenka is the first woman since Victoria Azarenka in 2012 and &rsquo;13 to win back-to-back Australian Open titles, and the fifth since 2000 to win the championship here without dropping a set &mdash; a group that includes Serena Williams.
The 21-year-old Zheng was making her debut in a major final and playing an opponent ranked in the top 50 for the first time in this tournament.
It was the second time in as many majors their paths had met in the second week.
Sabalenka beat Zheng in the U.S. Open quarterfinals last year on her way to the final, where she lost to 19-year-old American Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka avenged that loss to Gauff with a semifinal victory here that extended her winning streak at Melbourne Park to 13 matches. It's now 14.
In just her ninth major, Zheng's push to the final was two rounds better than her previous best run to the quarterfinals in New York last September.

Collins' made her announcement hours after fellow American Jennifer Brady posted on social media that she'd be taking another extended time out while she recovers from further surgery on her right knee.
Brady, who reached her first Grand Slam singles final at the Australian Open in 2021, said she'd go back to college to stay close to the game.
Collins took the college route to the elite tour, playing at the University of Virginia and wining NCAA singles titles in 2014 and 2016.
Until her breakthrough run to the Australian Open semifinals in 2019, Collins had never won a match at a major.
At Melbourne Park that year, though, she beat then No. 2-ranked Kerber in the fourth round on a run that took out three seeded players. She also reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros in 2020 and second week in the U.S. Open in 2022.
After undergoing surgery in 2021 to treat endometriosis, she said she played in less pain and was in better shape to win.
Collins said with the ups-and-downs of being on tour and all the travel, &ldquo;this is a really tough sport.&rdquo; &ldquo;I have other things that I'd kind of like to accomplish in my life outside of tennis, and would like to be able to do that," she said. "Obviously having kids is a big priority for me.&rdquo;&nbsp;

India's Sumit Nagal succumbed to the heroics of Jungcheng Shang in the second round of the Australian Open.

Chinese tennis prodigy Juncheng Shang blunted Sumit Nagal's challenge at the Australian Open to halt the Indian's impressive run at the first major of the season here on Thursday.
Coming into the match after an inspiring win over a top-30 player, Nagal began in the same dominating fashion but the 18-year-old wild card entrant got better as the game progressed to walk out a winner with a 2-6 6-3 7-5 6-4 scoreline.
The second round contest lasted two hours and 50 minutes and it was clear that Nagal had run out of steam in the fourth set.
In contrast, Shang began to serve well from the third set onwards and was at ease in pocketing his service games despite being troubled by high backhand balls in the match.
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old Nagal, who hails from Jhajjar in Haryana, will exit the Melbourne Park with cherishable memories, having made the main draw through the Qualifiers and scripting a win over world number 27 Alexander Bublik.
Nagal will take home AUD 180,000 (nearly 98 lakh) for his effort. The money should take care of most of his 2024 Tour budget.
Nagal got the Chinese engaged in baseline fight from the beginning and drew the first blood in the very first game of the match.
It was a passing forehand winner from Nagal that helped set up the first break point and then a lucky net chord handed him his second chance which he converted with the Chinese making a backhand error.
Shang tried hard to get the break back by raising the intensity and power in his strokes but Nagal was ready to fight fire with fire and succeeded in opening up a 3-1 lead with consecutive holds.
The Chinese found himself in a spot of bother again when he was down 0-30 in game five but pulled himself out of the hole by serving well.
A forehand error by Shang handed Nagal another break opportunity for a handsome 5-2 lead but the Chinese saved that with a drop shot. Shang saved two more chances in a slugfest that saw six deuce points but a double fault gave Nagal his fourth breakpoint.
Shang's 17th unforced error of the match -- a wide backhand -- resulted in another break and it allowed the Indian to serve out the opening set in the next game.
The Chinese came out playing better and aggressive in the second set and had a chance to put Nagal under pressure but could not convert the two break points in the second game.
Shang cut down on his errors, served well and the court coverage also improved and in no time, he was leading 5-2 with two breaks.
Coming out to serve to stay in the set, Nagal began with an unforced error but managed to hold. Shang was still troubled by the high backhand balls, but closed the second set in his favour with a powerful forehand, which Nagal could not return.
The third set was a tighter affair with no break of serve until Shang cashed in on a flurry of backhand errors by Nagal at 5-5. At 15-all, Nagal buried backhand on net and then netted one more to be down by two break points.
Nagal saved both but handed another chance to the Chinese, who converted with a screaming down-the-line forehand winner.
Shang served out the set with an excellent serve.
As the match wore on, Shang's serve became better and better. He hardly conceded points on his serve. It put pressure on the Indian. A visibly tiring Nagal had his back on the wall after he lost serve at 3-3.
It was a backhand winner from Shang that earned him two break chances. At the net, Shang received a feeble return which he smashed for a winner to take a 4-3 lead and made it 5-3 with an easy hold.
The Chinese served out the set and match without fuss.
In the doubles, India's Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden came down from a 0-5 deficit in the opening set to beat the local team of James Duckworth and Marc Polmans.
The Indian pair of Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Anirudh Chandrasekar lost 3-6 4-6 to the Hungarian pair of Marton Fucsovics and Fabian Marozsan.
N Sriram Balaji, who has paired with Romania's Victor Vlad Cornea, will now open his campaign on Friday as their match against Italian pair of Matteo Arnaldi and Andrea Pellegrino has been rescheduled due to rain.&nbsp;

Tournament director Craig Tiley said in a statement Friday that the Grand Slam tournament will now offer 86.5 Australian dollars (USD58.4 million) in total prize money.
The U.S. Open announced in August that it was increasing its total prize money and player compensation to a record USD 65 million, which is the highest among the four Grand Slam tournaments.
&ldquo;We've upped prize money for every round at the Australian Open with the major increases in qualifying and the early rounds of singles and doubles,&rdquo; Tiley said.
At Melbourne, first-round qualifiers will receive a 20% increase to 31,250 Australian dollars (about USD 21,000). Men's and women's singles champions will receive 3.15 million Australian dollars each (about $2.15 million).
