World number one Magnus Carlsen has lauded D Gukesh for making the most of his chances to be crowned the youngest ever world chess champion but has ruled out the possibility of a title showdown with him as desired by the Indian teen.
The 18-year-old defeated defending champion Ding Liren in the 14th and final round of the match on Thursday to become only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to claim the coveted trophy.
"It's an incredible achievement (by Gukesh), first he was down in the FIDE circuit, won the tournament in Chennai on demand, then he had an amazing performance in the Candidates tournament," said Carlsen on a popular recap stream, analysing the match.
Carlsen said he was a bit surprised by how the match unfolded with most of the games ending in draw.
"This was something that was bit unexpected, a lot of us thought that Gukesh was a favourite to win the match but this was a game that never really took off, Gukesh was doing a great job of keeping the position alive and suddenly it was all over," Carlsen said.
"It's a really good thing for him, he has the title now for two years, winning this championship is extremely motivating so there is a very good chance that he is going to go for a great run of results now and probably become the number two player now and may be number one in the not so distant future," he noted.
In the post-event press conference, Gukesh stated that he would love to fight it out against Carlsen at some point. The Norwegian maverick decided not to defend his title in 2023 after winning the world championship in 2013.
"Winning World Chess Championship does not mean I am the best player, obviously that is Magnus Carlsen. I want to reach the level Magnus has achieved," Gukesh said.
"Obviously playing against Magnus in the world championship would be amazing, it would be the toughest challenge there is in chess. It is up to Magnus, but I would love to test myself against the best player in the world."
But Carlsen ruled that out.
"I am not part of this circus anymore," said Carlsen in a general reference to world title clashes.
Carlsen also praised Gukesh's team and said they did a good job.
"It is becoming progressively harder (to play mainstream openings) all main lines are analysed so they had to jump a bit," Carlsen said of the opening choices made by Gukesh.
"I have generally kept it fairly risk-free with the white pieces, I have tried not to let things go out of control," he added.
The world's best player for a decade now was critical of Liren's choices in the final game.
"There are lot of things that Ding could have done differently, Gukesh really made most of his chances," he said.
"It's a massive moment for India, it&rsquo;s a combination of work that is being done there. This is not over.
"There are many more success stories to come, it was really heartwarming to see what it means to Gukesh, it was a very beautiful moment," Carlsen summed it up.

Indian chess players have been on a roll this year, winning the Olympiad gold in both the men's and women's events, for the first time among other achievements.

Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh on Thursday became the youngest world chess champion at 18 years after beating title-holder Ding Liren in the last game of a nerve-wracking showdown to herald a new era of dominance by the country's chess players.
Taking forward the incredible legacy of the great Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became only the second Indian to clinch the coveted prize after the iconic player, who owned the crown five times in his career.
After settling into "semi-retirement", the 55-year-old Anand, incidentally, played a pivotal role in shaping Gukesh at his chess academy in Chennai.
Gukesh secured the requisite 7.5 points as against 6.5 of his Chinese rival after winning the 14th and last classical time control game of the match that seemed headed for a draw for most part. As winner, he will walk away with a whopping USD 1.3 million (approx Rs 11.03 crore) from the 2.5 million prize purse.
"I was dreaming this moment for the last 10 years. I am happy that I realised the dream (and made it) into reality," the soft-spoken Chennai-lad told reporters after the historic triumph here.
The triumph was expectedly hailed across India with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing it as "historic and exemplary".

The reticent teenager grinned widely and raised his arms in celebration after the victory, a stark contrast from the poker face he usually sports while playing. Once the feeling settled in, a tear or two also escaped his eyes, showing a rare moment of vulnerability.
"I got a bit emotional because I was not expecting to win," he added.
Even on Thursday, when the analysts had proclaimed that the match, in all likelihood, would go into a tie-breaker, Gukesh's face hardly gave anything away as he gained the upper-hand.
It was a momentary lapse of concentration by Liren in what seemed a drawn endgame and as it happened, the entire chess world was left in a state of shock.
The players were just left with a rook and a bishop and Gukesh had two pawns against one trying to make a foray without much success.
However, the ability to keep pushing for more gave Gukesh a distinct advantage over the Chinese and the latter simply collapsed to give the title to Gukesh.
Before Gukesh's feat on Thursday, the legendary Garry Kasparov of Russia was the youngest world champion when he won the title at the age of 22, dethroning Anatoly Karpov in 1985.
Gukesh had entered the match as the youngest ever challenger to the world crown after winning the Candidates tournament earlier this year.
"Every chess player wants to live this dream. I am living my dream," said Gukesh.
Gukesh, who won the 14th game against Liren after 58 moves in four hours, is the 18th world chess champion overall.
If Thursday's game was also drawn, winner was to be decided in shorter duration tie-breaks on Friday.
Gukesh had won the third and 11th rounds before Thursday's decisive game, while the 32-year-old Liren emerged victorious in the opening and 12th games.
All other games were drawn in the match.
"I came here suddenly and I lost the first game itself. Luckily while going back I had Vishy Sir (Anand) in the lift and he said 'I had only 11 games left you have 13'," Gukesh recalled, while shining a light on the contribution of his mentor.
Anand was citing his 2006 first match over Veselin Topalov that he had eventually won after losing the first game.
Interestingly, Anand had won that match in the last Classical (12th) game, with black pieces. Anand lost the title to Norwegian maverick Magnus Carlsen back in 2013.
It was on the 55th move that the dye was cast.
Liren, leaving his sense of danger, went for a rook trade and Gukesh pawed him almost instantly. He knew that it was his title to lose and it took just three more moves before the Chinese called it a day.

After concluding the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, where she finished 12th with a score of 4.5 out of 13, Indian chess star Divya Deshmukh has called out rampant sexism in the sport.
The 18-year-old took to social media and wrote, 'I have been wanting to address this for a while but was waiting for my tournament to be over. I got told and also myself noticed how women in chess are often just taken for granted by spectators. The most recent example of this on a personal level would be in this tournament, I played a few games which I felt were quite good and I was proud of them.'

I was quite upset to hear this and I think is the sad truth that people when women play chess they often overlook how good they actually are, the games they play and their strength. 'I felt it was unfair in a way because if I go to any guy&rsquo;s interview there would be way less judgement on a personal level, actual compliments about the game and the player. I feel women are under appreciated and every irrelevant thing is focused on and hated on while guys would probably get away with the same things. I think women face this on a daily basis and I&rsquo;m barely 18. I have faced so much judgement including hatred over the years for things that don&rsquo;t even matter. I think women should start getting equal respect,' Divya concluded.

Bodhana Sivanandan, from Harrow in north-west London, won the European Blitz Chess Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, over the weekend.

An 8-year-old British Indian schoolgirl has made chess history after being named the "super talented" best female player at a European championship.
Bodhana Sivanandan, from Harrow in north-west London, won the European Blitz Chess Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, over the weekend after a winning streak since she took up chess during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.
In the European championship, she went head-to-head with some of the best players in the world and defeated an international master to win her crown.
"8-year-old super talented Bodhana Sivanandan (ENG, 1944) made an astonishing result in the Blitz competition. She scored 8.5/13 points to win the first women prize and earn 211.2 blitz ELO points,&rdquo; said the European Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, which concluded in Croatia on Sunday.
Praise for the chess prodigy has since been pouring in on social media, with leading professionals highlighting her &ldquo;unbelievable&rdquo; performance.
"I always try my best to win, sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't," Bodhana told the BBC after her win.
Father Siva Sivanandan said his daughter was "trying her best and it has worked in favour of her".
"She likes chess and she likes travelling. We keep trying and keep going," he said.
A few months ago, Sivanandan was among a group of young chess enthusiasts invited by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to 10 Downing Street to mark the government&rsquo;s major new GBP 1 million investment package for the game. The package has since been in place to support children attending schools in disadvantaged areas across England to learn and play chess, improve visibility and availability of the game and fund elite playing.
"I was struggling to support my son with the required chess tournaments and coaching instrumental to his development at such a young and crucial age,&rdquo; said Jitendra Singh, father of another British Indian chess prodigy &ndash; nine-year-old Shreyas Royal.
"With this grant from the government we will be able to help more kids flourish at the game through the hard-working organisations of the English Chess Federation and chess in schools and communities. I believe that it is also a very beneficial hobby and would love to see more people getting into the game from this monumental announcement,&rdquo; he said.
As part of the package, the UK&rsquo;s Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) says it will invest GBP 500,000 in the English Chess Federation (ECF) over two years in order to develop the next generation of world-class talent. Funds will support expert coaching, training camps and cutting-edge computer analysis for international events to assist current grandmasters and up-and-coming players.
&ldquo;We want to give more young people the opportunity to find the thing that they love and realise their potential. So this package is focused on getting more young people playing chess and supporting them to develop their talent,&rdquo; said UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re also equipping our elite chess players with expert coaching to help them dominate at the highest levels of the global game and restore England&rsquo;s reputation among the best in the world,&rdquo; she said.
Alongside the support committed to elite players, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) will provide GBP 250,000 to 85 local authorities across England to install 100 new chess tables in public parks and outdoor green spaces, to allow more people to play, connect, tackle loneliness, and develop problem solving skills.
In addition, the Sunak-led government has set out plans to encourage more primary school children, particularly girls, to learn to play the game. The UK Department for Education said it will award grants of up to GBP 2,000 to at least 100 schools in disadvantaged areas across England, subject to interest.&nbsp;

The Rameshbabu siblings are now first pair of siblings in the history to achieve the title of Grandmaster.

Vaishali Rameshbabu achieved a historic milestone on Saturday, becoming India's third female Grandmaster by surpassing a remarkable 2500 rating during the 2023 IV Llobregat Open.
This accomplishment also cements the Rameshbabu siblings, with her younger brother Praggnanandhaa, as the first-ever Grandmaster pair of siblings in the history of chess.
While Praggnanandhaa's rapid ascent to become the second-youngest Grandmaster in 2018 captured much attention, Vaishali's own stellar achievements have now come to the forefront.
At 22 years old, she has emerged from the shadows, adding another layer to the family's chess legacy.
Vaishali's journey includes attaining the titles of Woman International Master at 15, Woman Grandmaster at 17, and International Master at 20.
Vaishali joins an exclusive club, being only the third female Indian Grandmaster, following in the footsteps of Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli. Her accomplishment marks India's first female Grandmaster in 12 years, after Dronavalli achieved the title in 2011.

Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi stunned World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a Pro Chess League match for his maiden victory over the World No. 1.
Playing for Indian Yogis, Gujrathi won the match with black pieces after capitalising on a mistake by Carlsen who missed a checkmate in three late on Tuesday.
Carlsen was playing for Canada Chessbrahs in the Pro Chess League, an online tournament featuring 16 teams playing rapid games with a prize fund of USD 150,000.
"Just defeated the GOAT, World champion, Magnus Carlsen!!:)," Gujrathi tweeted after beating the five-time and reigning world champion Norwegian.
28-year-old Gujrathi joined the likes of fellow Indian Grandmasters R Praggnanandhaa, D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi in beating Carlsen. The Indian trio had earlier pulled off wins over the Norwegian chess wizard in 2022.

The coach of young Chess prodigy Hans Niemann, Maxim Dlugy has admitted to cheating on Chess.com. According to emails reviewed by Motherboard, grandmaster Maxim Dlugy acknowledged he cheated in his own tournaments in 2017 and 2020.
Two days after World Champion, Magnus Carlsen accused his protégé Niemann of cheating in various tournaments, Dlugy has said that it was actually him who had taken part in the malpractice whilst playing online.
In one email, Dlugy wrote that he was playing in a tournament on Chess.com in front of his students and crowdsourced moves from them — which is against Chess.com’s play rules.

Pakistan has backed out of the 44th Chess Olympiad being held in Chennai accusing India of trying to politicise the tournament by holding the torch relay in Jammu and Kashmir.

In what is being called an 'artificial intelligence uprising' on social media, a chess robot broke the finger of its 7-year-old opponent during a tournment in Moscow. 
A video being shared online shows the robot taking one of the boy's pieces off the chessboard but when the 7-year-old makes his move the robot grabs his finger. 
People then rushed to help the boy who was eventually freed and taken away. 
Sergey Lazarev, the President of the Moscow Chess Federation, told Russian news agency Tass that the accident occurred because of the boy's hurried movement. 
According to Tass, the boy was able to play the rest of tournament but in a cast.
The incident is reported to have happened on July 19.
