Virat Kohli isn't just a name that plays cricket but in the last decade, he emerged as no less than a Demigod. It was his prolific batting and the ability to score centuries at will around the globe that made him stand out among the rest.
Ever since Virat's Test debut in 2011, there emerged a few batters who came close to matching the genius of Kohli but couldn't surpass the king.
Joe Root was one name that did feature in the 'Fab 4' along with Steve Smith and Kane Williamson but despite the best efforts by the Englishman, Kohli reigned supreme in all 3 formats for nearly a decade.
From his debut year in 2011 till the end of 2019, Virat smashed 7202 runs in 141 Test innings at a whopping average of almost 55.
He had smashed 27 Test tons during this period, which was the 2nd-most after Hashim Amla among active players back then. However, the South African batter took 74 innings more than Virat to score that 1 extra hundred.
Till that moment, Root didn't feature even among the top 7 players. But things were about to change.22 November 2019, the date when Virat smashed a magnificent 136 in the 2nd Test vs Bangladesh and wrapped up another brilliant year in whites. But little did anyone know that an agonising time awaited Virat.
Well, who would have imagined back then that it would be the last Test hundred that Virat would score in over 3 years, a lean patch so bad that Virat seemed like a mere shadow of his vintage best.
At a time when Virat was experiencing the lowest of lows, Root was leaping like a salmon. 2021 proved to be the breakthrough year for the former England captain.
He took the longest format by storm and scored 1708 runs in whites in 2021, the 3rd most in a calendar year in the history of Test cricket.
From his debut in 2012 to the end of 2020, Root scored 17 Test tons but has added 17 more since then, till the end of the 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka.
With centuries in both innings of the Lord's Test, Root took his total tally of Test tons to 34, the most among active cricketers. Virat too broke his hundred drought in whites with 2 tons in the first half of 2023 but he is now left at the 4th spot on the list with 29 tons in total.
While Root rose the ranks with the speed of light, Kohli is now last among the Fab 4 as far as statistics are concerned. But the fans still believe in Virat Kohli.
Those who have watched him from close quarters know that when on song, he will once again score centuries for breakfast. And despite the twilight of his career, the world awaits for the King to roll back the glory days and reclaim his throne.

The 33-year-old Root rediscovered his old touch as he looked in control during his unbeaten 122, which resurrected England to 353 in their first innings after they were left tottering at 112 for 5 in the morning session on day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test in Ranchi.
"When you see someone go through a little trouble, it's always great to see them out the other end. When great players don't score runs it's only a matter of time until they do," Cook told TNT Sport after day 1 on Friday.
"What Joe Root did today (Friday) was go back to basics. This is a clip of someone with the shots you'd expect Joe Root to play (Cook was speaking while a video of Root's innings was being played). All the talk about the reverse scoop being unusual, this is a very typical Joe innings.

It was his first century in the five-match series following scores of 29, 2, 5, 16, 18, 7 in his last six Test innings.
"Root has played beautifully today. It has been a very different Root to what we have seen in the series, one who has been playing with control...It has been very un-Bazball, for those who like the entertainment, but very effective," Cook, a former England skipper, said.

"We don't have to sit in a meeting room and I think it's more authentic and more genuine when you can have it around a dinner table. Having a coffee in the morning or whatever, I think that's when you do your best learning," he said.
England found themselves trailing India by 190 runs in Hyderabad before staging a sensational comeback. Here too, they conceded a 143-run lead but were not able to catch up with their opponents.
"Regardless, of the result of the game, we're always going to play how we know. It's what's given us success for a good period of time now. It's what brings the best out of us. We've been in similar situations before.
"The last time we played India in England, in that one-off Test, we were miles behind in the game and we managed to chase that score down. There have been numerous other occasions where we've done things that we never thought we could have done before," said Root.
On Ollie Pope's match winning 196 in the opening Test, Root added: "Ollie went out and probably played one of the best overseas innings you'll see in these conditions, especially against that attack on that surface.
"The more time we spend in these conditions, hopefully, we can continue to familiarize ourselves and keep that calmness about how we go about things.
"But also, when the chances are there and when the time's right, we can keep applying pressure and then try to attack at the right moment."

England lost by 106 runs as 'Bazball' couldn't take the visitors to a stiff target of 399.
"He is England's best batsman there's ever been in all formats &ndash; but he does struggle sometimes with the tempo of this Bazball era," Cook, who is England's highest Test run-getter, said on 'TNT Sports' channel.
"He sees all these other people playing these aggressive shots, which suit their style. Rooty has got 11,500 Test runs, he's brilliant, but he's so desperate to fit into what Ben (Stokes) and Brendon (McCullum) are doing that sometimes I don't think he gets his balance of attack and defence right," the owner of 12,472 Test runs said.
Cook wants Root to play at his natural rate rather than ape other players, who are scoring at a quicker rate.
"He was on 16 off nine balls and he doesn't normally strike at that rate &ndash; he's normally striking at 75 to 80, which is still incredibly high for a Test match strike-rate, with zero risk.
"That's when I love watching Joe Root bat." Cook feels that if Root gets his first 15 runs, he is always in line to get a hundred, something that didn't seem likely on Monday in Visakhapatnam.
"When he gets in, you call it early &ndash; I've called it early a few times on sub-continent days: he's on 15 but he's getting a hundred here.
"He's going to milk them at his will, sweeps, all in control. I don't think he was in that control," he observed.
