Senior Delhi Congress leader and former MLA Jai Kishan died due to cardiac arrest at his home in Sultanpur Majra here on Thursday, party leaders said. He was 66.
Jai Kishan was one of the biggest Dalit leaders of the Congress in Delhi and was elected to the legislative assembly from Sultanpur Majra constituency five times. He contested the Delhi Assembly polls from the seat in February but did not win.
Several party leaders paid homage to Jai Kishan and expressed grief over his demise.
The demise of Jai Kishan is an irreparable loss for the Congress, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said in a post on X.
"As a dedicated Congress worker, he served the people and contributed to the empowerment of the underprivileged sections of society. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives and supporters of the departed soul," he said.
Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal extended his condolences to Jai Kishan's family and supporters on behalf of the Congress family.
"It is a matter of great sadness to hear about the demise of our senior INC leader and 5-time MLA from Delhi Sh. Jai Kishan ji today. He rose from a marginalised background to go on and serve the public and the party with immense dedication for many years, and left an indelible mark on the lives he touched," Venugopal said.
Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said, "May God give peace to the departed soul and strength to the bereaved family to bear this sorrow." Jai Kishan held various positions in the party organisation and served as AICC secretary and vice president of the Delhi unit.

In a video message, Hassan, a National People&rsquo;s Party MLA, said, "The Waqf Amendment Act 2025 violates the rights of Muslims. I personally condemn and reject this Act. I will challenge it in the Supreme Court." In a separate development, the Manipur BJP strongly condemned the torching of the house of its Minority Morcha president Md Asker Ali by a mob.
In a statement, the BJP condemned the incident and assured that "such unfortunate incidents shall not happen in the future." Ali's house at Lilong in Thoubal district was set on fire on Sunday for allegedly supporting the Act.
Following the incident, Ali posted a video on social media, apologising for his earlier statement.

Unidentified gunmen ambushed former Haryana MLA Nafe Singh Rathee's car in Jhajjar district and shot him dead.

Former Haryana MLA Nafe Singh Rathee was shot dead by assailants on February 25. The unidentified gunmen ambushed the Indian National Lok Dal party's state president's SUV car in Jhajjar's Bahadurgarh town. One other party member who was with Rathee also died.
Meanwhile, two security personnel who were with Rathee in the car are said to be in critical condition.
According to reports, the shooters were in a Hyundai i10 car when they fired multiple rounds at Rathee's car.
Doctors said that Rathee was brought dead as he sustained bullet injuries on his neck and other body parts.
&nbsp;"In the evening, four people who had been shot were brought to Brahma Shakti Sanjeevani Hospital. Out of them, two had suffered heavy bleeding and were brought dead, still, we tried CPR but they couldn't be saved. Two others are admitted to the ICU with gunshot wounds on the shoulder, thigh, and left side of the chest," Dr Manish Sharma at Brahma Shakti Sanjeevani Hospital told ANI.
"Former MLA Nafe Singh and another person Jaikishan were brought dead. They were shot in the neck, back, and shoulder. Multiple wounds suggest there were multiple rounds of fire... Sudden major vessel damage causes heavy blood loss and eventually, heart attack..."
Rathee served as an MLA of the INLD from Bahadurgarh where the attack took place. He has served twice as a legislator twice in the Haryana Legislative Assembly. He had also once contested Lok Sabha elections from Rohtak constituency.
It is believed that a property dispute may have been one of the reasons for the attack.
INLD leader Abhay Chautala told accused the government of failing to provide Rathee with security despite there being threat to his life, and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister ML Khattar and Home Minister Anil Vij.

Delhi MLAs got a pay hike after 12 years, with the last revision in 2011.
The hike came into effect from 14 February when the President gave her assent, and a government notification was issued on 9 March. The development hit headlines on 13 March.

Notably, Madal Virupakshappa is the chairman of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited. Lokayukta was on duty after getting a complaint about the demand for a bribe. According to the official source of Lokayukta, more than Rs 1.7 crore in cash was found at Prashanth Madal's office.
In a similar incident, a team of Lokayukta caught a clerk posted at Employees' State Insurance Corporation red-handed for accepting a bribe of Rs 5000 in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior on February 24, an official said. The accused clerk has been identified as Shubham Gupta. He was demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a woman contractual employee posted in MPEB (Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board) in lieu of withdrawing her maternity leave money.&nbsp;

Deepak alias Dilip Meena, the son of Congress legislator from the Rajgarh assembly constituency Johari Lal Meena, is one of the three accused in the gang-rape of the 15-year-old girl in February 2021, the police said.
The two other accused had been arrested earlier.

Former Assam MLA Hitesh Basumatary was arrested along with two other persons for allegedly being involved in efforts to form a terror group, police said on Saturday.
"Sophisticated weapons" along with ammunition were recovered from his house, Kokrajhar's Additional Superintendent of Police Nabaneeta Sharma said.
Basumatary was arrested on Friday night from his residence in Baksa district, she said.
The two other persons arrested were Bodoland Jatiya Suraksha Manch working president Daorao Dekhrab Narzary and Bodoland Contractor Association president Bikram Daimary, she said.
While Narzary was arrested from Kokrajhar, Daimary was arrested from Udalguri.
"We had received information that some people were trying to form a new terrorist outfit and in this connection, we have arrested these persons," Sharma said.
When produced at the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Kokrajhar, Basumatary and Daimary were sent to five days in police custody. Narzary was sent to 14 days in judicial custody, she said.
"Further details will be known after the investigation," the officer said.
Basumatary was elected MLA from Chapaguri in 2011 on a Bodoland People's Front (BPF) ticket.

Several people belonging to community staged protests in various parts of the city on Monday night demanding Singh's arrest.
Many All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislators and corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation reached the police stations, where protests were held and sought stringent action against Raja Singh, party sources said.
According to police, complaints were filed against Singh in several police stations under South, East and West Zones.
Dabeerpur Police Inspector G Koteswar Raos said they received a complaint against Singh, which alleged that the BJP MLA made derogatory remarks against a religion.
An FIR was booked against Singh under various sections of IPC pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and criminal intimidation among others, he said.
During the arrest, the Goshamahal MLA told reporters that his video was pulled down by the social media platform on which it was uploaded and that he will upload “part 2” of the clip after his release.
“They removed my video from YouTube. I don’t know what the police are going to do. Once I am released second part (of the video) will certainly be uploaded. I am doing it for Dharma. I am ready to die for dharma,” he said.
Singh sought to know why several complaints were lodged against him in various police stations.
“Why there are complaints? Our Ram is not Ram? Our Sita is Sita? I requested the DGP with folded hands not to allow the person (Munawar Faruqui) who made comedy with vulgar language against Ram and Sita,” he said.
On August 19, Raja Singh was taken into custody by the police here when he tried to reach the venue of a show held to be held next day by stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui.
Faruqui performed the show on that day even as the police picked up 50 people who tried to reach the venue and protest.

In both cases, it was this NCP leader - Sonia Doohan - who was at the centre of the action. In the latest incident, two NCP leaders were arrested from a Goa resort on July 2. It was the Taj Resort in Convention Centre in Goa where the rebel Sena MLAs were staying. NCP's Sonia Doohan, and Shray Kothiyal had tried to check into the hotel, but were arrested after being accused of using fake IDs. The two politicians were granted bail on 3 July.
The rebel MLAs had been tipped-off that a woman at the resort was asking about them, according to news reports quoting sources. The incident was compared to another episode two and a half years ago, when some NCP MLAs sneaked out of a hotel during the short-lived alliance between Ajit Pawar and BJP's Devendra Fadnavis.

Five NCP legislators had been taken to BJP-ruled Haryana, and housed on the fifth floor of a hotel in Gurugram. Sonia Doohan claimed that she booked rooms on all floors of the hotel, except the fifth floor. NCP claimed that heavy security had been deployed at the hotel to keep the MLAs trapped.
Doohan said that in order to free the MLAs, she mapped a route inside the hotel which would not have CCTV cameras. Subsequently, one NCP MLA was taken out of the back gate which was linked to another hotel. When two more were being taken out, uproar broke out.
Doohan said that she had to leave her own car at the hotel, and take another vehicle to drive the 2 MLAs to Sharad Pawar's house in Delhi. Then, the fourth MLA was "rescued" at 2:30 at night.
So, who is Sonia Doohan, the protagonist in these escapades? She is the national president of the student wing of the Nationalist Congress Party.

In a shocking incident reported from Odisha, an MLA allegedly rammed his car into a crowd, injuring over 20 people, as per reports.
The incident reportedly occurred in Odisha's Khurda on March 12, when a suspended legislator of the Biju Janata Dal alleged sped his car into a procession of BJP workers.&nbsp;Videos purportedly of the startling incident were shared widely on social media.&nbsp;Following the incident, MLA Prashant Jagdev was reportedly beaten up, while his car was vandalised and set on fire.

Around 200 BJP workers were marching outside the office of Banpur Panchayat Samiti near Chilika Lake when the incident occurred, as per reports.&nbsp;MLA Jagdev was reportedly halted by police when he was driving towards the spot, but he ignored them and instead, crashed his SUV into the procession.&nbsp;The legislator was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the incident.
Jagdev was suspended from the BJD last year for allegedly beating up a Dalit BJP leader, as per reports.

Sirsa has also resigned as the president of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee. Sharing his resignation on Twitter, the Sikh leader stated he will not ontest upcoming DSGMC internal elections.&nbsp;
