It symbolises peace and harmony." Eid-ul-Fitr marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan. It is celebrated across the world on different days and it is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon which is supposed to denote the start of the Shawwal month in the lunar Islamic calendar. This year the month of Ramzan was of 29 days, while last year it was of 30 days. According to the Islamic calendar, there are 29 or 30 days in a month, depending on the sighting of the moon. During the month of Ramzan, people do not eat or drink anything from sunrise to sunset.

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "Mr. Modi clearly is going out of his way to keep Mr. Trump in good humour."
"He says international organisations, from which India has benefited immensely, have become irrelevant.
"This is the US President's language. In fact, it is Mr. Trump who is doing his best to make them irrelevant and now Mr. Modi is repeating 'his good friend's' chant," Ramesh claimed.

The agreements inked will provide for promoting the use of national currencies for cross-border transactions, sharing of maritime data, joint work in combating money laundering and enhancing cooperation in the MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) sector.
On the second and final day of his two-day trip to Port Louis, PM Modi attended the national day celebrations of Mauritius as the chief guest.
A contingent of Indian armed forces also participated in the celebrations along with a warship of the Indian Navy and the Akash Ganga skydiving team of the Indian Air Force.
Following talks with his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam, PM Modi announced India's new vision for Global South and named it "MAHASAGAR" or "Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions", a policy approach that came against the backdrop of China's relentless attempts to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean.
PM Modi said a free, open, secure, and safe Indian Ocean is the common priority of India and Mauritius and that he and Ramgoolam agreed that defence cooperation and maritime security are an important part of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
"We are committed to extend full cooperation in the security of Mauritius' Exclusive Economic Zone," the prime minister said in his media statement.
The unveiling of the new vision came 10 years after the prime minister announced during his visit to Mauritius in 2015 New Delhi's SAGAR or Security and Growth for All in the Region policy that formed the bedrock for India's engagement with the Indian Ocean Region.
"We have taken the SAGAR vision forward for the stability and prosperity of this entire region. Today, taking it forward, I would like to say that our vision for the Global South will be, beyond SAGAR -- (it will be) MAHASAGAR that is "Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions"," he said in a media statement.
PM Modi said the new approach will focus on the spirit of trade for development, capacity building for sustainable growth, and mutual security for a shared future.
"Under this, cooperation will be ensured through technology sharing, concessional loans and grants." The Indian prime minister also said New Delhi will cooperate in building the new Parliament building in Mauritius and it will be a gift to the island nation from the 'Mother of Democracy'.
Delving into strategic cooperation between the two nations, PM Modi said every possible help will be provided to Mauritius to help it meet the needs of its Coast Guard and that New Delhi will assist in the establishment of a police academy and national maritime information sharing centre in the country.
"Cooperation on white shipping, blue economy and hydrography will be strengthened. We fully respect Mauritius' sovereignty in the context of Chagos," he said.
India has been supporting the island nation in its efforts to reach a mutually beneficial deal with the UK over the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean.
In October last year, the UK announced its decision to hand over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after more than half a century under a historic agreement.
Under the deal, sealed during the tenure of previous Mauritian PM Pravind Jugnauth, the UK would give up sovereignty over the Chagos Islands but would maintain a 99-year lease over the UK-US military airbase on the largest island, Diego Garcia.
However, the new Mauritius government led by Ramgoolam demanded the reopening of talks with the UK over the Chagos Islands as it sought a relook at the deal.
In his remarks, PM Modi said he and Ramgoolam decided to give the status of "Enhanced Strategic Partnership" to the India-Mauritius ties.
"We are each other's partners on the path of economic and social progress. Be it a natural disaster or the COVID disaster, we have always supported each other." "Be it defence or education, health or space, we are walking shoulder to shoulder in every field," he said.
"In the last 10 years, we have added many new dimensions to our relations. We have set new records in development cooperation and capacity building," PM Modi said.
The prime minister also announced several development projects to be implemented in Mauritius with India's assistance.
Work will be done to modernise the 100-kilometer-long water pipeline, he said.
In the second phase of community development projects, new projects worth 500 million Mauritian rupees would be started, he added.
We have also agreed to settle mutual trade in local currencies, PM Modi said.
The prime minister also mentioned various India-assisted projects in the island nation that included "metro express for speed in Mauritius, supreme court building for justice, social housing for comfortable stay, ENT hospital for good health, UPI and Rupay Card to promote business and tourism." PM Modi and Ramgoolam also dedicated to Mauritius the "Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Public Service and Innovation".
The prime minister also touched upon the people-to-people connection between the two nations.
"We will work together for the use of AI (artificial intelligence) and DPI, which is digital public infrastructure in human development," PM Modi said.
"For the people of Mauritius, facilities will be provided for Char Dham Yatra and Ramayana trail in India." India has close and longstanding relations with Mauritius, an island nation in the Western Indian Ocean.
A key reason for the special ties is the fact that Indian-origin people comprise nearly 70 per cent of the island nation's population of 1.2 million.
Since 2005, India has been among the largest trading partners of Mauritius.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday lauded the unique wildlife conservation, rescue and rehabilitation initiative 'Vantara', which he visited this week, and urged people to focus on kindness towards animals.
Modi on Sunday visited Vantara, the animal rescue, conservation and rehabilitation centre in Gujarat's Jamnagar district.
Spread over 3,000 acres, Vantara is located at Reliance Industries' Jamnagar refinery complex. It is a rescue centre dedicated to the welfare of captive elephants and wildlife, providing sanctuary, rehabilitation and medical care to animals rescued from abuse and exploitation.
Modi said in a post on X, "Inaugurated Vantara, a unique wildlife conservation, rescue and rehabilitation initiative, which provides a safe haven for animals while promoting ecological sustainability and wildlife welfare. I commend Anant Ambani and his entire team for this very compassionate effort."
"An effort like Vantara is truly commendable, a vibrant example of our centuries-old ethos of protecting those we share our planet with," he said, sharing pictures from his visit.
At Vantara, Modi said he saw an elephant which was the victim of an acid attack.
"The elephant was being treated with utmost care. There were other elephants, too, which were blinded and that, too, ironically by their mahout. Another elephant was hit by a speeding truck. This underscores an important question -- how can people be so careless and cruel?" he said.
"Let us put an end to such irresponsibility and focus on kindness towards animals," he added.
There were other instances, too, Modi said and added that a lioness suffered severe spinal injuries after it was hit by a vehicle.
"She was getting proper care. A leopard cub abandoned by her family got a new lease of life, with proper nutritional care. I compliment the team at Vantara for the care given to several such animals," the prime minister said.
Vantara is home to more than 2,000 species and over 1.5 lakh rescued, endangered and threatened animals.
Modi explored various facilities at the centre and closely interacted with the various species of animals rehabilitated there.
Vantara said in a statement, "The prime minister patted an okapi, came face to face with chimpanzees in open who were got from a facility where they were kept as pets, hugged and lovingly played with orangutan who were earlier kept in an over-crowded facility, saw up close a hippopotamus which was under water, saw crocodiles, undertook a walk in between zebras, fed a giraffe and a rhino calf."
Modi also saw a large python, a unique two-headed snake, a two-headed turtle, tapirs, leopard cubs which were left in an agricultural field and later spotted by villagers and rescued, giant otters, bongos (antelope), and seals. He saw elephants in their jacuzzi.
With a glass partition in between, Modi sat face to face with snow tigers, white lion and a snow leopard.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said with a strong talent pool and thriving industries, Madhya Pradesh is becoming a preferred business destination and that this is the time, and right time, to invest in the state.
"For the first time in the history of Bharat, there is an occasion when the whole world is so optimistic about it," Modi said after inaugurating the mega 'Invest Madhya Pradesh - Global Investors Summit-2025' in Bhopal.
The commoners and economists, countries and institutions worldwide are optimistic about India and have great expectations from Bharat, he said at the summit, aimed to showcase MP's infinite possibilities for investors and industrialists.
"The world's future is in India" - such comments in the past weeks have bolstered the zeal of investors, he said.
Modi said the World Bank has expressed confidence that India will continue to be the world's fastest growing economy in the coming years.
He also said the Deregulation Commission will help create investment-friendly regulatory ecosystem in states.
A UN organisation on climate change has said Bharat is a "superpower of solar power" and that while many countries only talk, India shows results, Modi said.
India is emerging as the top supply chain for global aerospace firms. Textile, tourism and technology sectors will generate crores of jobs in years to come, he said.
"I can quote and give many instances of the world's confidence in Bharat", and such statements boost the confidence of states, he said.
"In the past decade, India's energy sector brought unprecedented growth, especially in green energy. Bharat has done what was unimaginable," Modi said.
"In the past 10 years, nearly 70 billion dollars, over five trillion rupees were invested in renewable energy sector. In last year alone, over 10 lakh jobs were generated in clean energy space. MP has reaped immensely from this boom in energy sector," he said.
The PM unveiled the MP government's 18 new policies, aimed at attracting major investment in the BJP-ruled state.
"With a strong talent pool and thriving industries, Madhya Pradesh is becoming a preferred business destination," he said.
"This is the time, and right time, to invest in the state," Modi said.
"The speed of development in MP has doubled after the formation of the 'double engine' government in the state," he said.
Modi further said MP is among the leading states in India's electric vehicles revolution.
"MP, where once roads were not motorable, buses couldn't move, is seeing an e-vehicle revolution. By January 2025, nearly 2 lakh EVs were registered in MP. This is a 90 per cent growth. This shows MP is turning into a new manufacturing destination," he added.
There are several opportunities in the health and wellness sector. The world is liking the 'heal in India' mantra, he said.
Modi said in the past two decades, MP has seen lot of transformations.
There was a time when there was a big crisis of electricity and water, and law and order was even worse. In such a scenario, industrial development was difficult, he noted.
But in the past 20 years, with the help of people, the BJP state government focused on governance. Two decades ago, people used to stay away from investing here, and now it is among the top states for investment, Modi said.
MP is the fifth largest state in the country in terms of population. It is among the top states in agriculture and in the top five in minerals, he said.
"Madhya Pradesh is blessed with Maa Narmada (river), the life-giver," the PM said.
MP has all possibilities and potential to be among the top states, Modi said.
"In the past decade, India has seen infrastructure boom. I can say, MP has hugely benefited by it," he added.
A large area of Delhi-Mumbai expressway passes through MP. The state is getting connectivity to Mumbai ports and north India market, he said.
MP has an over 5-lakh-km road network. Its industrial corridors are getting connected to modern expressways. This for sure means MP's logistic sector growth, Modi said.
In terms of air connectivity, Gwalior and Jabalpur terminals have been expanded. "MP's railway network is being modernised...100 per cent electrification of railways has been done in MP," he said.
"Pictures of the Rani Kamlapati station (in Bhopal) have enthralled everyone. On this line, 80 railway stations under Amrit Bharat station scheme will be modernised in the state," Modi said.
"Today, MP is a power surplus state with nearly 31,000 mw generation capacity, with 30 per cent clean energy," he said.
MP has over 300 industrial zones and more are to come, he said, adding there are huge possibilities of bountiful return for all investors in the state.

Noting the importance of water security for industrial development, Modi said MP was doing remarkable work in water conservation.

"The river interlinking mega mission is on in MP. It will benefit its farming and industry. Recently, the Rs 45,000 crore Ken-Betwa rivers interlinking work started in MP. It will enhance productivity on 10 lakh hectare land," Modi said.
CM Yadav said with the Global Investors Summit being held here, MP will make its identity as a major global investment destination.

The government is committed to double MP's economy in the next five years and the state has decided to observe 2025 as the year of industries and employment, as part of the commitment to make India a developed nation by 2047, he said.

Modi stressed the role of human resources in ensuring success in different fields, and said the country should have leaders who can spearhead innovation and channelise skills.
In this context, he cited the example of Gujarat, noting that questions were raised about its future as a separate state due to its lack of natural resources.
However, the state today is doing very well due to its leaders, he said, adding that it has no diamond mine but nine out of 10 diamonds in the world pass through the hands of a Gujarati.
The School of Ultimate Leadership is an upcoming leadership institution in Gujarat to enable "authentic leaders to advance public good", an official statement has said.
"The two-day conclave will serve as a premier platform where leaders from diverse domains like politics, sports, arts and media, the spiritual world, public policy, business and the social sector will share their inspiring life journeys and discuss aspects relating to leadership," it said.

In the New Delhi constituency, BJP&rsquo;s Parvesh Verma defeated Kejriwal by over 4,000 votes. Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit received 4,568 votes. Atishi won from Kalkaji, defeating BJP&rsquo;s Ramesh Bidhuri by over 3,500 votes, while Congress&rsquo;s Alka Lamba secured 4,392 votes.

Sisodia lost in Jangpura to BJP&rsquo;s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by a narrow margin of 675 votes. Conceding defeat, he expressed hope that the winning candidate would serve the constituency well.
Among other winners, Gopal Rai secured the Babarpur seat, defeating BJP&rsquo;s Anil Kumar Vashisht by 18,994 votes. Kailash Gahlot, who had switched from AAP to BJP before the elections, won from Bijwasan, defeating AAP&rsquo;s Surender Bhardwaj.
Several BJP leaders also emerged victorious, including Vijender Gupta from Rohini, Kapil Mishra from Karawal Nagar, and Ravinder Singh Negi from Patparganj.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed gratitude to the people of Delhi for their support.

The RTI inquiry was filed in November 2024 by Pune-based activist Prafful Sarda, who requested information regarding the annual Diwali festival expenditures by both Prime Ministers. Dr. Singh, who passed away on December 26, 2024, was specifically mentioned in the query alongside PM Modi.
In its response, the Prime Minister&rsquo;s Office (PMO) clarified on January 3 that no public funds were allocated for personal expenses of either leader. "Personal expenses of the prime minister are not borne on government accounts. The PMO does not spend any money on the PM's personal expenses," said Parvesh Kumar, Under Secretary and Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) at the PMO.

The Congress party's student wing, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), has opposed the move, urging that the college be named after the late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away last week. In a letter to PM Modi, the NSUI highlighted Singh&rsquo;s immense contributions to education, citing his role in establishing institutions such as IITs, IIMs, AIIMS, and introducing the Central Universities Act. The student wing emphasized that naming the college after Singh would inspire future generations and honor his transformative vision, particularly his reforms that liberalized the economy in 1991. They also proposed the creation of a central university named after Singh.
On the other hand, Congress MPs Naseer Hussain and Sukhjinder Randhawa criticized the BJP for honoring someone like Savarkar, who, according to them, had written mercy petitions to the British during colonial rule. Randhawa remarked that the PM should reconsider the decision, given Savarkar&rsquo;s past actions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday highlighted the "critical" role of youngsters in the nation&rsquo;s progress and called for adopting a futuristic approach to equip them with skills in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Speaking at an event on Veer Bal Diwas, Modi underscored the need to adapt to rapid changes and challenges across various fields, emphasising the government's "youth-centric" policies.
"This era has moved beyond machines to machine learning. AI is taking centre stage, and we can see its application replacing conventional software. It is essential to make our youth future ready to tackle these challenges,&rdquo; he said, asserting that the government is committed to supporting young talent and fostering their self-confidence.
In a ceremony celebrating Veer Bal Diwas, Modi remembered the "unparalleled" sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh&rsquo;s sons, the Sahibzadas, who chose "unwavering courage and faith over submission to the Mughal Empire's oppression".
"More than 300 years ago, on December 26, the Sahibzadas, despite their tender age, displayed unparalleled bravery and sacrificed their lives. They rejected every temptation and endured unimaginable torture, showing that for them, the nation&rsquo;s cause was supreme,&rdquo; he said, urging youngsters to draw inspiration from their legacy.
He noted that Veer Bal Diwas teaches an enduring lesson: "No matter how adverse the circumstances, nothing is greater than the nation's cause. Every act done in the interest of the nation is an act of valour."
The prime minister also interacted with the winners of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. Seventeen children from 14 states and Union Territories were honoured for their exceptional contributions in fields like art and culture, bravery, innovation, science and technology, social service, sports, and environment.
Congratulating the awardees, Modi said, "These children have demonstrated what India&rsquo;s youth are capable of achieving. I extend my best wishes to all the winners on behalf of the nation."
He elaborated on the government&rsquo;s focus on empowering the youth through targeted policies.
