With a total number of voters reaching 2,14,21,555, the process of filing nominations for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 has commenced in Punjab. The filing will continue until May 14, excluding May 11 and 12 due to gazetted holidays.
Scrutiny of papers is scheduled for May 15, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 17. Polling across all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab is set for June 1, from 7 am to 6 pm.
Providing further insights, Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C mentioned that May 4 marked the deadline for registering new voters in Punjab.
As per the electoral roll released on May 6, male voters number 1,12,67,019, female voters are 1,01,53,767, and other voters amount to 769.
Forms submitted for the registration of new voters by May 4 will be decided by May 14, thereby determining the final count of voters in the state.
CEO Sibin C highlighted that 5,28,864 voters belong to the 18-19 age group, with 3,16,670 being boys, 2,12,178 girls, and 16 classified as other voters. Additionally, 1,89,832 voters are aged above 85 years, including 88,169 men, 1,01,661 women, and two others.
For the 13 Lok Sabha seats, a total of 24,451 polling stations will be set up, with 16,517 in villages and 7,934 in cities. Punjab boasts 100 percent photo identity cards (EPIC) coverage.

The Election Commission has directed the maintenance of hygiene and facilities at polling stations, including the provision of clean water, tank cleaning, restroom sanitation, and managing equipment such as generators and fans.
Additionally, arrangements for party representatives and polling agents have been specified, along with instructions for staff to bring voter cards for rehearsal.
Furthermore, the officer has urged that all expenses on polling day should be documented in the consolidated fund and compliance reports must be submitted to the District Education Officer by April 29th.

Spearheading the charge for efficient electoral processes, Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Sibin C, launched the Poll Activity Management System (PAMS) for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on Thursday.
It is pertinent to mention that during the Assembly Elections of 2022, the PAMS played a pivotal role in monitoring various poll events such as Party Dispatched, Party Arrived, Mock Poll conducted, Poll Started, Poll Closed, Voters in Queue at 6 pm, Party Dispersed, Party Reached and Material Deposited. This system facilitated real-time monitoring of activities across all polling stations through sector magistrates, utilizing a dedicated mobile application.&nbsp;
Sibin C underlined that the PAMS has been enhanced and refined for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024, promising heightened efficiency in managing election-related activities while ensuring transparency in the electoral process. To provide real-time updates, mobile applications compatible with both Android and iOS platforms have been developed. Furthermore, a token-based access algorithm has been implemented to ensure secure interactions between the application and the server. Leveraging GPS coordinates (latitude and longitude), the application meticulously tracks the movement of parties during the dispatch process, thereby upholding transparency and accountability at every step.&nbsp;

The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, accusing him of violating its directions by making a child raise slogans in favour of his party during election campaigning.
The complaint was submitted to Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C by an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation led by state Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
In the complaint, Cheema alleged that Badal made the child raise slogans of 'Shiromani Akali Dal Zindabad' and 'Vote for Akali Dal' during his 'Punjab Bachao Yatra' at Raikot on April 6.
Cheema said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief passed the microphone to the child and asked him to address the gathering.
He said that Badal's action was a clear-cut violation of the directions of the Election Commission, which in its February 5 letter, had refrained the political parties from using children in election campaigns.
Cheema also said the Election Commission should take the strictest possible action against the Shiromani Akali Dal president to set an example.
The AAP leader also said it also a violation of the mandate of the judgment of the Bombay High Court in its Order dated 4th August 2014 (Chetan Ramlal Bhutada vs State of Maharashtra and others) which stressed the need to ensure that political parties do not allow participation of minor children in any election-related activities.

The party has so far declared candidates for Hoshiarpur, Anandpur Sahib, Sangrur, Amritsar, Patiala, Khadoor Sahib, Bathinda, Faridkot and Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab.
In its first list, AAP had named incumbent MP Sushil Rinku from Jalandhar. However, he later quit the party and joined the BJP.
Rinku is now the BJP's candidate from Jalandhar.
While the Congress is yet to name its candidate from Jalandhar, the name of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi is doing the rounds as a possible nominee.
From Ludhiana, the BJP has announced Ravneet Sigh Bittu as its candidate. Bittu, the incumbent MP from the seat, left the Congress to join the saffron party.

Enforcement agencies have seized drugs, unaccounted-for cash and liquor worth Rs 192 crore in Punjab since the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections came into force last month.
The poll code came into effect on March 16.
According to data provided by the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer's office, various law enforcement agencies seized drugs, narcotics, liquor and cash worth Rs 192.08 crore till Tuesday.
The agencies, including the state police and the Border Security Force, seized drugs and narcotics worth Rs 166.58 crore. Liquor worth Rs 12.15 crore, Rs 3.87 crore in unaccounted-for cash and precious metals worth Rs 8.82 crore were also seized, according to the data.

Police on Tuesday registered a case against an owner and a manager of a cinema hall in Patiala for violating the Model Code of Conduct by screening promotional videos showing the Punjab government logo.
The action was taken following a complaint received from an RTI activist in this regard.
Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C said that his office had received the complaint regarding gross violation of the Model Code of Conduct as the promotional video ads featuring the Punjab government logo and the chief minister's appearance are being played in cinemas across the state.
Taking immediate cognizance of the complaint, the Punjab CEO had sought a report from the Patiala deputy commissioner under whose jurisdiction the cinema hall falls, the secretary public relations department, and also from all deputy commissioners-cum DEOs in the state to ascertain the status of display of such government advertisements in any of the cinema halls across the state.
The CEO said that a notice was issued to the manager of the cinema hall and later a flying squad team visited the cinema hall.
Thereafter, being a matter primarily related with the display of an advertisement in the cinema hall, the case was put up before the Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC).
As per the MCMC committee's recommendations, the police in Patiala registered a case under section 188 (disobedience to order promulgated by a public servant) and section 177 (furnishing false information) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).&nbsp;

Around seven people were detained by Punjab police ahead of the 'Chetna March' planned in support of Amritpal Singh, chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' outfit, on Tuesday.
They were going to Bathinda to participate in the Chetna March in support of Amritpal Singh and his associates, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA).
Speaking to ANI, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Bathinda Range, Surinder Pal Singh Parmar said, "Around 5-7 people who were going to participate in the 'Chetna' march in support of Amritpal lodged in Dibrugarh jail have been detained. Wherever we anticipate a law and order situation and we have the provision to detain, preventive action is carried out. These are just preventive measures, any civilian who wants to come and visit the 'Akal Takht' is welcome."

Under fire from various farmer bodies, the Punjab government on Tuesday withdrew its order declaring private silos as wheat procurement centres in the state.
Hours before the government's withdrawal, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had said they will hold demonstrations on Sunday against allowing private silos to be used as wheat procurement centres in Punjab.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has directed the cancellation of the order pertaining to declaring silos as sub yards, Punjab Mandi Board chairman Harchand Singh Barsat said, adding that the decision has been taken in view of farmers' demands.
Barsat added the silos will be used for storage purposes only. Responding to farmer unions' claim that the silos will have made the grain markets redundant, Barsat clarified that no market committees will be dissolved.
The Punjab Mandi Board, in its order on March 15, had declared 11 silos in nine districts, being managed by private companies, as purchase, sale and storage centres in view of the Rabi marketing season that started on April 1.
A steel silo, considered to be a scientific way of storage of food grains, ensures better preservation than conventional storage warehouses. A silo also can also act as a purchase centre where farmers can bring their crops for sale.
Barsat said every year new procurement centres are added for the convenience of farmers. Punjab has a total of 1,907 procurement centres, 47 of which have been added this year, he said.

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested two persons for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,50,000 by posing themselves as vigilance bureau officials.
An official spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau said on Monday that the arrested persons have been identified as Paramjeet Singh alias Pamma, a resident of village Daroli, in Patiala district and Sahil Goyal of Patiala. They have been booked on an online complaint lodged by Jagseer Singh, a resident of village Arnetu, Patiala district, on the Chief Minister's anti-corruption action line.
The spokesperson said that the complainant has alleged in his complaint that both the accused had taken bribe of Rs 2,50,000 in the name of vigilance officials from him to help in an ongoing enquiry with allegations of embezzlement in village development works against his mother. During the enquiry, the allegations levelled in the complaint were found to be correct and true. Subsequently, a case FIR No. 16 dated March 28, 2024, under Section 7-A of Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against both the accused at police station VB Range Patiala.
Further investigation into this case was under progress, the official said.

Following the directions of Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, teams led by commissioners and senior superintendents conducted simultaneous flag marches in all 28 police districts from 11 am to 3 pm, said Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla.
The exercise aimed to boost public confidence, besides preparing the personnel to tackle any untoward situation, he added in a statement.
Shukla said police commissioners and senior superintendents have been directed to install special nakas (checkpoints) and enhance patrolling to keep a check on anti-social elements in their respective jurisdictions.
To check the movement of criminals, bootleggers and drug smugglers, Shukla said senior superintendents of police in border districts have been asked to seal the entry/exit points by installing interstate nakas and not let anyone enter or exit without frisking and thorough checking of their vehicles.
Security has been beefed up across the state and nakas (check points) -- including 57 permanent, 149 temporary and 11 hi-tech with sophisticated gadgets -- have been planned at all the 217 entry/exit points. Excise officers have been mandated to be part of these interstate nakas, the statement said.

District Magistrate-cum-District Electoral Officer, Aashika Jain has directed the Arms Licensees of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar to deposit their weapons with immediate effect with nearby Police Station of Arms Dealers in the wake of enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct and upcoming Lok Sabha Elections-2024.
She said no fee would be chargeable against the deposition of weapons with the Police Station while a nominal fee of Rs 200 per month would have to be paid to the Arms dealer against the deposition of weapon.
Today, while reviewing the status of the deposition of Arms&rsquo; Licenses in the district, she asked ADC (G) to ensure the display of the deposition fee outside every Arms Dealer in the district to facilitate the Arms licensee. These display notices should also be randomly checked, she instructed the SDMs.
The District Magistrate further said that a prohibitory order dated March 16, 2024, under section 144 of the CrPC has already been in force in the district regarding a ban on carrying firearms, ammunition, explosives inflammable items and sharp weapons.&nbsp;
She said that non-compliance with this order would be legally actionable and may lead to prosecution under the appropriate sections of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant laws.
However, this order would not comply with personnel of the army, paramilitary forces and police personnel in uniform bank guards and cash and carry vehicles of banks who are duly authorized and carrying arms as part of their official duty. National Rifle Association members would also be exempted vide ECI order no. 464/L&amp;O/2007/PLN-1 dated 08.01.2017.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Viraj S Tidke, Assistant Commissioner (G) Davy Goyal and Election Tehsildar Sanjay Kumar were also present in the meeting.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday announced that two toll plazas on the Ludhiana-Barnala state highway will be shut down on April 2 as their concession period is expiring.
Raqba (near Mullanpur in Ludhiana) and Mehal Kalan (near Barnala) toll plazas will cease their operations on April 2.
The 57.94 km-long Dhaka-Halwara-Raikot-Barnala state highway is located in the Ludhiana district.
To upgrade the highway, the Punjab government had approved a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme in 2007 and struck an agreement with Rohan Rajdeep Tollways Limited for the project for 17 years.
"The company, referring to the Covid period and farmers' agitation, requested to increase the time of their toll operations for 448 days but the Punjab government rejected that request.
"So both the toll plazas will cease their operations and will no longer collect any toll from the public," Mann said in a post on X.
The CM said his government is not the one to rob people for the benefit of the capitalists.
"We are not here to give unfair benefits to capitalists and won't allow anyone to loot the general public after their toll operation period has expired," he said.

"In a major breakthrough, SSOC (State Special Operation Cell) Mohali has effectively dismantled the criminal network led by USA-based Pavittar Chaura &amp; Husandeep Singh of Chaura Madhre gang, by arresting their three key operatives: Lovejit Khakh, Gursewak Bamb &amp; Bahadur Khan - along with seizure of one pistol, 15 cartridges and a Toyota Fortuner vehicle," Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said in a post on X.
"All three were wanted in number of criminal cases including murder, attempted murders, dacoity, arms act, NDPS etc. They were living in Mohali by concealing their actual identities," he further said in a post. "On March 27, 2024, during the evening hours, BSF received intelligence regarding narcotics smuggling activities by certain miscreants using drones near Naushera Dhalla village in the border area of Tarn Taran district," the release mentioned.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has recovered a packet of suspected heroin, a motorcycle and two mobile phones in the border area of Punjab's Tarn Taran district, an official release said on Thursday.
According to the release, the troops of the BSF conducted a search near Naushera Dhalla village in Tarn Taran on Wednesday, March 27, after receiving intelligence that led to the recovery.
"On March 27, 2024, during the evening hours, BSF received intelligence regarding narcotics smuggling activities by certain miscreants using drones near Naushera Dhalla village in the border area of Tarn Taran district," the release mentioned.
"Upon receiving this specific information, BSF troops promptly responded and rushed to the suspected area. They observed two suspected individuals sitting at a playground near Naushera Dhalla village. Upon seeing BSF troops, the miscreants fled, leaving behind some belongings. Despite BSF troops' pursuit, the suspects managed to escape," it further stated.
"During the initial search of the area at approximately 4.33 pm, BSF troops successfully recovered one packet of heroin (weighing 530 grams, wrapped in yellow adhesive tape), one motorcycle, and two mobile phones. This recovery occurred near Naushera Dhalla village, Tarn Taran district," the release added.

The Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the BJP had "again started Operation Lotus" in Punjab and was trying to break Arvind Kejriwal's party. There was no immediate reaction from the BJP on the allegations.
AAP legislator from Jalalabad Jagdeep Kamboj Goldy claimed that he received a call from one Sewak Singh from an international number on Tuesday with an offer to join the BJP.
Kamboj told reporters that he asked the MLA to join the BJP and said, "'We will give Rs 20-25 crore'. I said I do not need it." Similar claims were made by Balluana MLA Amandeep Singh and Ludhiana South legislator Rajinder Pal Kaur Chhina.
They asserted that they would not leave the party.
Kamboj alleged that the BJP was scared of Kejriwal and AAP. "Where they fail to win people's mandate, they try to buy MLAs, MP and other AAP leaders at any cost," he charged.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav chaired a coordination meeting of a State Level Security Committee for Railways (SLSCR) on Wednesday to review the security challenges and evolving nature of threat to the railways.
The meeting was attended by Special DGP Railways Shashi Prabha Dwivedi, Special DGP Internal Security RN Dhoke, Principal Chief Commissioner Railway Police Force (RPF) AN Mishra and Senior Deputy Security Commissioner Nitish Sharma, among others, according to an official statement.
DGP Yadav said the purpose behind holding this meeting was to ensure better synergy and synchronisation between the RPF, GRP (Government Railway Police), Punjab Police and the central agencies.
Joint measures are being taken to combat security challenges and protect railway infrastructure, he added.
Stressing on the need for better coordination between the RPF, GRP Punjab and the central agencies, the DGP directed the concerned officers to hold regular coordination meetings to discuss the problems and amicably solve them.

The lone Lok Sabha member of the AAP, Sushil Kumar Rinku, joined the BJP on Wednesday along with Punjab MLA Sheetal Angural, dealing a blow to the party that is already facing a crisis following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Rinku, the MP from Jalandhar, said he decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the development of Punjab, especially Jalandhar, and accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in the state of not helping him in development endeavours in his constituency. Thus, he could not honour the promises he had made to the voters, Rinku added.
He said he was impressed by the working style of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and lauded the BJP-led Centre for its development initiatives, including the boost in flight services and launch of new trains to Jalandhar.
"I have no greed for power. I am doing a new experiment for the betterment of Jalandhar," Rinku told reporters at his joining ceremony here.
