Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the Congress of twisting facts and distorting his comments in the Rajya Sabha related to B R Ambedkar after BJP leaders "exposed" the opposition party's repeated "insults" to the architect of the Constitution.
Addressing a press conference here, Shah alleged that the Congress in the past has also misrepresented his and even PM Narendra Modi's comments to spread confusion and mislead people.
"I condemn the Congress for twisting facts. Why did it happen? It happened because BJP leaders spoke on how the NDA governments upheld the Constitution and established with facts that the Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-Constitution and anti-reservation," Shah told reporters here.
The senior BJP leader said the Congress also insulted V D Savarkar and blew to smithereens the values enshrined in the Constitution by imposing Emergency.
"When all these facts came out, the Congress used its old tricks and made an effort to mislead the society by presenting twisted facts," Shah said.
Shah said he comes from a party that can never insult Ambedkar.
Asked about Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's demand for his resignation, the home minister said in a lighter vein that he can quit if this will make the Congress president happy but it will never solve his problems. He has to remain in his chair, a reference to his party being in the opposition, for 15 more years, Shah said.
Kharge, he added, has acted under Rahul Gandhi's pressure to be part of this "malicious" campaign against him by distorting his views on Ambedkar.

"You (Congress) cannot use an 11-12 second clip out of Shah's entire speech and mislead the nation," Rijiju said and asserted that for the BJP, Ambedkar is equivalent to God.
However, the opposition was unrelenting. Amid sloganeering, the House was adjourned for the day soon after it met post-lunch.
In the morning, after the listed papers and reports were tabled and the House went ahead with the scheduled Zero Hour, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh rose and alleged that Shah insulted Ambedkar with his remarks during the debate on the Constitution.
Several other Congress members were on their feet and started raising slogans like "'Ambedkar ka apamaan nai sahega Hindustan' (India will not tolerate Ambedkar's insult)".
Countering them, Rijiju said it was the Congress that insulted Ambedkar and did not honour him with a Bharat Ratna.
Congress President and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge raised a poster of Ambedkar. Amid an uproar, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar adjourned the proceedings within a few minutes till 2 pm.
When the Upper House re-assembled post lunch at 2 pm, Rijiju said two Bills were listed for the day -- the Appropriation Bill and the Banking Regulation Bill. He requested the Opposition parties to allow the House to function and start the discussion on the Banking Regulation Bill.
However, as sloganeering by members of the opposition parties continued, Chairman Dhankhar said Babasaheb Ambedkar is a father figure for all, being the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Congress leader Pramod Tiwari sought to raise a point of order, claiming that Shah "insulted" Ambedkar a day earlier.
Rejecting Tiwari's claim, Rijiju accused the Congress of misleading the country by using only a part of Shah's remarks made in the Rajya Sabha.
He said the Home Minister in his speech had in very clear words mentioned how the Congress party had insulted Ambedkar.

Rijiju explained that the Home Minister had on Tuesday said that the Congress hatched a conspiracy to defeat Ambedkar when he contested for polls from Mumbai and later from Vidarbha.
The minister demanded that the Congress must apologise to the nation, alleging that Ambedkar wanted to get re-elected to the Lok Sabha but was not allowed to do so by the Congress, which forced him to leave electoral politics.
Rijiju also said that until 1990, the Congress-led government refused to give a Bharat Ratna to Ambedkar.
He accused the Congress of attempting to malign and remove Ambedkar's name from India's history while trying to garner votes by using his name.

At this, Kharge repeated Shah's remark and said it only showed the minister's disrespect towards the architect of the Constitution.
Kharge claimed that Shah had "made fun of" Ambedkar by saying that "if they (Congress) had taken God's name as many times, it would have attained a place in heaven in all of its seven births".
The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha argued that this was an insult to Ambedkar, to which Rijiju said that he was again trying to mislead the House.
Leader of the House J P Nadda stood up in Shah's defence, saying that Kharge was trying to "mislead" the nation through Parliament and accused the Congress of treating Ambedkar with disdain and disrespect.
Nadda rejected Kharge's claim and alleged that it was the Congress that had disrespected Ambedkar during his lifetime due to which he had resigned from the Union Cabinet.
Members of both treasury benches and the opposition raised slogans against each other and TMC MPs walked out in protest.Amid the uproar, Chairman Dhankhar adjourned the House for the day.

When it comes to Ambedkar, his government's respect and reverence are absolute, the prime minister asserted.
In a searing attack on the Congress, Modi said if the party and its "rotten ecosystem" think their "malicious lies" can hide their misdeeds of several years, especially their insults towards Ambedkar, they are gravely mistaken.
He said people of India have seen time and again how one party, led by one dynasty, a reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family, has indulged in every possible dirty trick to obliterate Ambedkar's legacy and humiliate the SC/ST communities.
The list of the Congress' sins towards Ambedkar includes getting him defeated in elections not once but twice, first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru campaigning against him and making his loss a prestige issue, denying him a Bharat Ratna, and not allowing his portrait a place of pride in Parliament's Central Hall, the prime minister said.
He said, "The Congress can try as they want but they can't deny that the worst massacres against SC/ST Communities have happened under their regimes. For years, they sat in power but did nothing substantive to empower the SC and ST communities."
Modi said it is due to Ambedkar that "we are what we are", as he listed a series of measures taken by his government to implement his vision and accord respect to the iconic personality.
He said his government has worked tirelessly to fulfil Ambedkar's vision over the last decade.
"Take any sector - be it removing 25 crore people from poverty, strengthening the SC/ST Act, our Government&rsquo;s flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat, PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Ujjwala Yojana and more, each of them has touched the lives of the poor and marginalised. Our Government has worked to develop Panchteerth, the five iconic places associated with Dr. Ambedkar," he added.
For decades, Modi said, there was a pending issue involving land for "Chaitya Bhoomi", where Ambedkar was cremated. "Not only did our Government resolve the issue, I have gone to pray there as well," he added.
"We have also developed 26, Alipur Road in Delhi, where Dr. Ambedkar spent his last years. The house where he lived in London has also been acquired by the Government. When it comes to Dr. Ambedkar, our respect and reverence is absolute," he said.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed protests from the Congress and some other opposition parties over Shah's alleged insult of Ambedkar, resulting in both the Houses being adjourned.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of vacancies of 10 seats. The BJP currently holds nine of the seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) one. The Opposition hopes to make up for its loss in Maharashtra here with the SP expected to gain two additional members, and the BJP's tally is likely to fall to seven.
However, the BJP has fielded eight candidates in the state, setting the stage for a strong contest for one seat.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, ahead of polling for one Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP on Monday accused the ruling Congress of issuing a whip to its members to pressurise them and maintained that the MLAs have been elected democratically and have the right to vote as per their wish.
Addressing the media here, Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur said the Congress is forcing its MLAs to vote for party candidate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, even though the Election Commission had made it clear that a whip can't be issued for the Rajya Sabha election.
He also alleged that the police was tapping the phones of the MLAs and checking their location.
In Karnataka, Congress MLAs have been shifted to a private hotel to prevent cross-voting for the four seats up for grabs. State Congress chief and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has, however, denied the possibility.
Counting will begin at 5 pm and the results are expected late in the evening. The elections are unlikely to change the balance in the Upper House, as the BJP is expected to keep its tally while the opposition ranks might be depleted by a few seats.&nbsp;

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, BJP chief J P Nadda and new party entrant Ashok Chavan and Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan were among the 41 candidates elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha on Tuesday while Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh will witness polling on February 27.
The BJP has won the highest number of 20 seats, followed by the Congress (6), Trinamool Congress (4), YSR Congress (3), RJD (2), BJD (2) and NCP, Shiv Sena, BRS and JD(U) one each.
As there were no other candidates in the fray on these 41 seats, the respective returning officers declared them winners on the last date of withdrawal of nominations.
The biennial elections were announced for February 27 in 56 seats. While 50 members will retire on April 2, six will do so on April 3. Now polling will be held for 10 seats in Uttar Pradesh, four in Karnataka and one seat in Himachal Pradesh from 9 am to 4 pm and counting will be held on the same day from 5 pm onwards.
Nadda and the party's other nominees Jasvantsinh Parmar, Mayank Nayak and diamond baron Govindbhai Dholakia were declared winners from Gujarat. The Congress, which has only 15 MLAs, and other opposition parties had preferred not to put up candidates against the BJP, which has 156 legislators in the 182-member Gujarat assembly.
From Rajasthan, Sonia Gandhi was elected unopposed so were BJP's Chunnilal Garasiya and Madan Rathore.
All the six candidates from Maharashtra -- BJP's Chavan, who joined the party only last Tuesday after quitting the Congress, Medha Kulkarni and Ajit Gopchhade; Shiv Sena's Milind Deora, who also resigned from the Congress last month, Praful Patel (NCP) and Chandrakant Handore (Cong) were elected unopposed.
In Bihar, JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Jha, BJP's Dharmshila Gupta and Bhim Singh, Manoj Kumar Jha and Sanjay Yadav (both RJD) and Akhilesh Prasad Singh (Congress) were declared winners.
Uttar Pradesh will see 11 candidates vying for 10 seats. The BJP has fielded eight candidates - former Union minister R P N Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, state party general secretary Amarpal Maurya, former state minister Sangeeta Balwant, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhna Singh, former Agra mayor Naveen Jain and local industrialist and former SP leader Sanjay Seth who joined the BJP in 2019.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) has renominated Jaya Bachchan and also announced the candidature of former MP Ramjilal Suman and retired IAS officer Alok Ranjan.
In Karnataka, five candidates are contesting for the four seats. The Congress has fielded Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain and GC Chandrasekhar, while Narayansa Bandage is the BJP candidate. JD(S) leader and former Rajya Sabha member D Kupendra Reddy is also in the fray.
In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP has forced a contest by fielding Harsh Mahajan against Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi for the single seat despite not having enough MLAs to win.
In the evening, TMC's Sushmita Dev, Sagarika Ghose, Mamata Thakur and Md Nadimul Haque and Samik Bhattacharya (BJP) were declared winners from West Bengal.
Union minister Murugan, Valmiki Dham Ashram head Umesh Nath Maharaj, Kisan Morcha's national vice president Banshilal Gurjar, and Madhya Pradesh BJP's women wing president Maya Naroliya bagged four seats for the BJP in Madhya Pradesh while Ashok Singh of the Congress also got elected unopposed.
From Odisha, Union minister Vaishnaw (BJP) and BJD's Debashish Samantray and Subhashish Khuntia were declared winners.
The YSR Congress won all the three seats in Andhra Pradesh - G Babu Rao, Y V Subba Reddy and M Raghunath Reddy while in neighbouring Telangana, the ruling Congress bagged two seats - Renuka Chowdhury and Anil Kumar Yadav - and BRS one seat - V Ravichandra.
BJP nominees in Uttarakhand (Mahendra Bhatt), Subhash Barala (Haryana), Devendra Pratap Singh (Chhattisgarh) were elected unopposed.
Prior to Tuesday's results, the BJP's strength in the Upper House of Parliament stood at 93 while the Congress had 30 seats, the second highest.
Among the members whose tenure is ending include former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan, Bhupendra Yadav, Mansukh Mandaviya and V Muraleedharan, and BJP's Anil Baluni and Sushil Kumar Modi.
Many senior BJP leaders and outgoing Rajya Sabha MPs, including seven Union ministers such as Dharmendra Pradhan and Bhupender Yadav, were renominated by the party for the biennial polls amid strong indications that several of them may contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Chandigarh University founder-chancellor Satnam Singh Sandhu was on Tuesday nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
In a notification, the home ministry said President Droupadi Murmu has nominated Sandhu to the upper house of Parliament.
Son of a farmer, Sandhu is one of India's leading educationists, the notification said.
Sandhu, who is also an agriculturist who struggled to attain education, is credited with the foundation of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) at Landran in Mohali in 2001 and the formation of Chandigarh University in 2012, it said.
He is actively involved in large-scale community efforts to improve health and wellness and also to advance communal harmony through his two NGOs -- the Indian Minorities Foundation and the New India Development Foundation. it added.
In a social media post, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar welcomed Sandhu's nomination to the Rajya Sabha.
"His rich work in community service and his passion towards education, innovation and learning will be big sources of strength for the Rajya Sabha. I wish him the very best for his tenure," Dhankhar said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is delighted that the president has nominated Sandhu to the Rajya Sabha.
"Satnam Ji has distinguished himself as a noted educationist and social worker, who has been serving people at the grassroots in different ways. He has always worked extensively to further national integration and has also worked with the Indian diaspora," the PM said.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice during the pre-lunch period on Tuesday after opposition members continued to create uproar in the house while raising the issue of Parliament security breach.
The chairman raised the issue of mimicry of the speaker and the chairman by an MP and the videography of the act, saying this was shameful and there has to be a limit.
The opposition MPs have been demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach issue and seeking the revocation of the suspension of opposition members in the house.
As many as 46 MPs of the Rajya Sabha have so far been suspended for unruly behaviour and for disrupting the proceedings of the house.
Soon after the house met at noon, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar ticked off senior Congress member Digvijaya Singh for causing disorder and asked him to take his seat.
"I saw some time ago on TV channels... there is no limit to falling. I saw a senior leader of your party videographing the unparliamentary behaviour of another MP. He is even a bigger leader than you. I can only wish for good sense to prevail," he said, adding, "There must be some limit...At least spare some places." "The issue is that the office of chairman of Rajya Sabha and the office of speaker is very different. Political parties will have their cross-currents, they will have exchanges, but imagine a senior leader of your party videographing another member of another party. Mimicry of chairman, mimicry of Speaker... How ridiculous, how shameful, how unacceptable," the chairman said.
Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan said the MPs come from far away places and they should be allowed to speak. But the chairman asked her to sit.
Soon Digivijaya Singh and another opposition member entered the well of the house and the Chairman adjourned the House till 2 pm, within two minutes of the beginning of proceedings.
Earlier, Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 12 noon as a handful of the remaining opposition MPs continued to press for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the Parliament security breach.
The opposition benches wore a deserted look on Tuesday. The Congress had just a few members, including Digvijaya Singh and Deependar Hooda, in attendance while some MPs from the TMC and the DMK were also present.
As the official listed papers were being laid on the table at the start of the proceedings, they rose in their places shouting slogans and demanding that Shah come to the House and give a statement on the security breach.
They also protested against the unprecedented number of MPs being suspended for demanding a statement from the government while the BJP MP who had given the intruders a pass to enter Parliament continued to remain in the House.
Chairman Dhankhar did not allow any one of them to speak and declared that the four notices he had received under rule 267 did not merit admittance. A notice under rule 267 calls for suspension of the business of the day to take up discussion on the issue being raised.&nbsp;

As many as 45 opposition members in Rajya Sabha were on Monday suspended from the House for unruly behaviour and disregarding the directions of the Chair after they raised slogans over the Parliament security breach issue and disrupted proceedings.
Among those suspended were Congress MPs Pramod Tiwari, Jairam Ramesh, K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala and Samajwadi Party's Ram Gopal Yadav. The development occurred soon after 33 opposition members, including leader of Congress Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, DMK's T R Baalu and TMC's Sougata Ray, were suspended in Lok Sabha following similar scenes in the Lower House.
While 34 of the Rajya Sabha MPs were suspended for the remainder of the Winter session, 11 have been directed to stay away from the House pending an inquiry report on their conduct by the Committee of Privileges.
The members were suspended after the House adopted a motion moved by Leader of the House Piyush Goyal for suspension of 34 MPs for the remainder of the session and another one for referring cases of conduct of 11 other opposition MPs to the privileges committee.
The Committee has been asked to submit its report within three months and the 11 MPs will not be able to attend the proceedings of the House till then.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar first named the suspended members and then put the motion to vote, which was adopted by voice vote.
The opposition members were creating a din in the House while demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the security breach in Lok Sabha and were raising slogans and disrupting proceedings of the House that saw repeated adjournments since morning.
The Winter session is slated to conclude on December 22.
Among the 34 suspended for the remainder of the session, 12 MPs are from the Congress.
The suspended members are - Pramod Tiwari, Jairam Ramesh, Amee Yajnik, Naranbhai J Rathwa, Syed Nasir Hussain, Shrimati Phulo Devi Netam, Shaktisinh Gohil, K.C.Venugopal, Rajani Ashokrao Patil, Ranjeet Ranjan, Imran Pratapgarhi, Randeep Singh Surjewala (all of Congress), while seven members are from TMC - Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Mohammed Nadimul Haque, Abir Ranjan Biswas, Santanu Sen, Mausam Noor, Prakash Chik Baraik and Samirul Islam.
Others suspended for the winter session are M Shanmugam, N. R. Elango, Kanimozhi NVN Somu, R. Girirajan, Manoj Kumar Jha, Faiyaz Ahmad V. Sivadasan, Ram Nath Thakur, Aneel Prasad Hegde, Vandana Chavan, Ram Gopal Yadav, Javed Ali Khan, Mahua Maji, Jose K. Mani and Ajit Kumar Bhuyan.

Arsenic found in groundwater in 230 districts in 25 states, while 469 districts of 27 states have reported fluoride contamination in the water table, says Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti.&nbsp;

In parts of 230 districts in 25 states in India, Arsenic has been detected in groundwater. As the Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Bishweswar Tudu, informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday, in 469 districts of 27 states, fluoride has been detected.&nbsp;
In a written reply, the minister said that the groundwater contamination reported by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) is mostly geogenic in nature, and does not show significant change over the years.
The CGWB, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, conducts regular monitoring and assessment of groundwater quality, including groundwater contamination of Arsenic and Fluoride. The board has carried out various studies in collaboration with other institutions, the minister said.
Recently, the CGWB signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) for the study of groundwater contamination, including arsenic and fluoride, with a focus on eight states - Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Assam.
