Nitesh Tiwari's much-anticipated two-part epic saga Ramayana has officially set its release dates, with Part 1 hitting screens during Diwali 2026, and Part 2 following in 2027.
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, and KGF actor Yash as Ravana. Sunny Deol will star as Hanuman.
This grand retelling adds to the long history of filmmakers adapting the Ramayana, each offering their own interpretation of the ancient epic.
Before Tiwari's Ramayana, several notable films have drawn inspiration from this mythological story, each adding a modern twist to the ancient narrative.
Singham Again (directed by Rohit Shetty) takes its cues from the Ramayana, with Ajay Devgn&rsquo;s DCP Bajirao Singham and Kareena Kapoor Khan&rsquo;s Avni Kamat mirroring the figures of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. The movie has performed well at the box office, though mixed reviews have slightly affected its long-term success.
Released in 2023, Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, brought the Ramayana to the big screen with Prabhas as Raghava (Lord Rama), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita), and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh (Ravana). Despite a massive opening of Rs 103 crore globally, the film was criticized for its visual effects and dialogue, leading to a disappointing box office collection of Rs 353.50 crore.
RRR, SS Rajamouli&rsquo;s 2022 blockbuster, didn&rsquo;t directly adapt the Ramayana, but drew clear influences from it. Ram Charan&rsquo;s role as Rama Raju echoes Lord Rama, while Jr NTR's Komaram Bheem shares traits with Hanuman, both in physicality and loyalty. The film was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2022.
Ram Setu, starring Akshay Kumar, explored the origins of the Ram Setu (Adam's Bridge) and brought the Ramayana into the modern age. While the film underperformed theatrically, it managed to outdo its Diwali co-release, Thank God.
Mani Ratnam&rsquo;s Raavan (2010) offered a dark, nuanced perspective of the Ramayana through the eyes of the demon king, Ravana. While the film flopped in its Hindi version, it was a success in Tamil. Abhishek Bachchan's portrayal of Beera Munda (Ravana) and Aishwarya Rai&rsquo;s Ragini Sharma (Sita) highlighted the complexity of the characters.
Lastly, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama (1993), co-produced by Japan and India, remains a nostalgic favorite for many. However, it faced controversy in India when it was initially banned, and its theatrical release was delayed for years. Although it was never released in theaters, its influence remains strong, and a potential re-release is awaited.
As the new Ramayana films continue to draw attention, audiences are eager to see how Tiwari&rsquo;s adaptation compares to these past attempts, especially with the star-studded cast and the epic scale of the project.

Nitesh Tiwari&rsquo;s &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo;, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has landed in legal trouble over intellectual property rights. According to a Money Control report, Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP, and Prime Focus Technologies Limited are arguing about who owns the rights to the title &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo;. They started talking about it in April 2024, but negotiations failed because the payment was not completed to finalise the agreement.
&lsquo;Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP claims that the rights to &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo; continue to belong to them, and any use or exploitation of the script or material by Prime Focus Technologies Limited or any affiliated entities would constitute an infringement of their copyright. The notice also states that Prime Focus Technologies Limited has no right, title, or interest in the &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo; material. The production company has expressed its intention to take legal action to protect its rights if necessary,&rsquo; the report stated.&nbsp;
It's uncertain whether this issue will cause any delays in the project.
Nitesh Tiwari and co-producer Yash have not yet responded to the reports.&nbsp;
Yash had previously confirmed his involvement in &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; as a co-producer, expressing his ambition to showcase Indian cinema globally. He mentioned collaborating with a VFX studio in L.A., where he met Namit, with whom he shared a vision for Indian cinema. They discussed various projects, and &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; became a focal point of their discussions, as Namit had already begun working on it.
He continued, &lsquo;The &lsquo;Ramayana,&rsquo; as a subject, deeply resonates with me and I had an approach in my mind for it. Yash has reportedly been roped in to play the role of Raavan, but there has been no confirmation yet.

Indian actor-producer Yash's Monster Mind Creations and producer Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios have collaborated on an adaptation of the Indian epic &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; for global audiences.&nbsp;
The film will be directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for &lsquo;Dangal,&rsquo; the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.&nbsp;
Yash is renowned for the &lsquo;K.G.F.&rsquo; action film franchise, with its second part being the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film ever.&nbsp;
Malhotra's recent credit includes &lsquo;Fighter,&rsquo; the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 so far. He is also the global CEO of visual effects company DNEG, which has contributed to seven VFX Oscar-winning films, including &lsquo;Dune: Part One&rsquo; and &lsquo;Tenet.&rsquo;
Over 60 film and TV adaptations of the mythological epic &lsquo;Ramayana,&rsquo; a timeless story of good triumphing over evil, have been produced, including Indian, anime, and Thai versions. Malhotra has been working on a big-screen adaptation for years and connected with Yash, finding a shared vision for the project.

Recently, actor Akruti Singh took to her Instagram stories and shared a video from the film&rsquo;s set which has been constructed in Mumbai. The video featured several glimpses of huge pillars and massive palace-like structures. In the caption of the video, Akruti wrote, &lsquo;Ramayana day 1&rsquo;. However, the video was deleted later.
Reports from April 2 revealed that Nitesh Tiwari conducted a puja on the sets before commencing shooting for the film with secondary actors. Ranbir Kapoor, set to portray Lord Ram, is expected to join the shoot soon.
Despite Nitesh Tiwari not officially announcing &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; yet, the film has been a topic of discussion for some time. Ranbir Kapoor is set to play the role of Ram, with Sai Pallavi cast as Sita. Initially, Alia Bhatt was considered for the role of Sita, but she had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts.
&lsquo;KGF&rsquo; star Yash is reportedly being considered to play Ravana, while Sunny Deol is said to have been finalized for the role of Hanuman. As per reports, the stars have done their respective look tests for &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo;, which is being created for the big screen by Nitesh Tiwari and Ravi Udyawar.

Pinkvilla also reported that the entire world of Ramayana has already been created with the use of VFX.

The VFX plates are prepared by the Oscar Winning Company, DNEG and it&rsquo;s a world that would blow away the minds of audiences. However, the strength of Ramayana won&rsquo;t be the visual but the simplistic storytelling and compelling inter-character emotions,&rsquo; the source told the portal.
Alia backed out of project
Earlier, it was reported that Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana will feature Alia Bhatt in a key role. However, she reportedly backed out of the project.
A source close to the development said, &lsquo;It's understandable that a magnum opus like Ramayana requires time and intense pre-production work, as they are going into the smallest details of everything to get it right on screen. Which is why things are progressing at a slower pace. Also, as far as the casting is concerned, Ranbir Kapoor is still committed to playing Lord Ram, while Alia Bhatt, who was approached for the project, is no longer part of it. The actress was in talks for the role of Goddess Sita, but the collaboration didn&rsquo;t work out because of date issues.&rsquo;

Now, Arun Govil, who played Ram in Ramayana, has shared his views on the movie.
In an interview with ABP news, he said that he hasn't watched the movie yet but he doesn't support the kind of language used in the film. He said Ramayana is a matter of faith for us and to tamper with its form in any way is unacceptable.
Highlighting the importance of presenting characters accurately, he said 'it is not done' to turn Ramayana into a 'Hollywood ki cartoon film'.
Arun added that perhaps the team doesn't have proper faith in Lord Ram and Sita that's why they made these changes.

Alia Bhatt was spotted leaving Nitesh Tiwari's office on June 7.
