Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale has written to Indian markets regulator SEBI demanding an investigation into alleged stock market manipulation through exit polls. Gokhale has specifically asked for an investigation into the exit polls by Axis MyIndia.
<h3>Investigation into exit polls</h3>
In a letter to SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, Gokhlae alleged that the inflated number of seats for NDA led to a rally in the Indian stock market on June 3rd. However a substantial discrepancy emerged between the actual election results and the exit poll predictions, resulting in a significant stock market crash the following day.
In the letter, the TMC MP had asked the SEBI to investigate if there were entities that booked profits through selling on 3rd June and made even more profits on 4th June by short selling. He had also asked the regulator to check if any of these entities have direct or indirect links with the BJP or with pollsters like Axis MyIndia.
&ldquo;The exit polls were clearly manipulated to rally the stock market. Lakhs of crores of investors' money was later wiped off yesterday after the markets crashed. There must be an investigation to determine if pollsters like Axis MyIndia intentionally inflated the exit polls for the BJP. This is important because Axis MyIndia also had BJP as a client," Gokhale said.

He also added that the investigation must determine whether the BJP and any poll agencies have made crores by manipulating the stock markets through exit polls.
<h3>Exit poll prediction</h3>
Most of the exit polls on Saturday predicted that BJP-led NDA would win anywhere between 350-401 seats. However, in the actual final results showed the BJP-led NDA winning on 292 seats, a discrepancy of 23 - 37%.
&ldquo;A margin of error can be expected in the range of even 10-15% but a discrepancy of 116-158% is unfathomable. Moreover, it has been noticed that such glaring discrepancy between predictions and results was seen not only in West Bengal but also in several other states," Gokhale&rsquo;s letter to Sebi said.
On Monday, driven by this exit poll prediction, the Indian stock market saw a sharp rally on Monday, 3rd June, as the Sensex and Nifty 50 both soared over 3% each. Subsequentlt, next day as the numbers for NDA came less than expected, the stock market witnessed a massive crash and the Sensex and Nifty 50 tanked over 5% each. Investors lost over Rs 31 lakh crore on Tuesday.
&ldquo;A spike of almost 3.5% on Monday after exit polls followed just the next day with a crash of about 5.8% after announcement of election results is unnatural and is an indication of how inflated and off-the-mark the exit polls were. Again, of specific concern here is the most popular &amp; most watched India Today - Axis MyIndia exit poll which was found to have been completely incorrect and inflated in favor of the BJP-led NDA," the Rajya Sabha MP&rsquo;s letter read.

Both indices closed around 1.5 % higher, with the Sensex at 75, 418 up nearly 1200 points while the Nifty closed at 22,967 up 370 points. As per experts, various factors contributed to the surge. With election-related jitters easing up, markets are factoring in political stability. "The rally is healthy since it is led by fairly valued large-caps," said V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, quoted by Mint. Another factor is the RBI approving its highest-ever dividend of 2.11 lakh crore rupees to the centre, which is more than double of what was earlier expected. This has also boosted market sentiment. Stock market will be open on Saturday as NSE and BSE have decided to conduct a special live trading session as part of a test to check whether the markets can function properly from a disaster recovery site in case the primary site is hit by an unpredicted event.&nbsp;
<h3>Stock Market to be open</h3>
This will be the third time in 2024, when the stock market is opening on a Saturday.
The special session will be divided into two sessions. The sessions will involve an intra-day switchover from the primary site to the disaster recovery site in equity and equity derivatives segments. The first session which will function from the primary site will be conducted from 9.15 am to 10 am. The second session from the disaster recovery site will open at 11:45 am and end at 12:40 pm.
Though this session will be a shorter one, it is expected to compensate albeit for the holiday on Monday, May 20 on account of voting for Lok Sabha elections in Mumbai.&nbsp;
<h3>Special sessions in 2024</h3>
Two other special sessions were conducted in 2024, one in January and the other in March. All the sessions are linked to SEBI's framework for Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and Disaster Recovery Site (DRS) for stock Exchanges.
The first special session that was held on January 20 was initially planned to test the preparedness for handling unexpected disasters. However, since January 22 which was the Ram Mandir inauguration day was declared an holiday, the Saturday session was converted into a full-fledged one.
Similarly, the second Saturday session on March 2 was conducted to ensure that trading activities continue without interruptions and that all data remains secure just in case the main trading center in Mumbai is affected by an adverse event.
Regularly markets are opened for 5 days a week from Monday to Friday and from 9:15 am till 3:30 pm.

The India VIX or volatility index hit a 52-week high, touching 18.2 from a low of 10, which it touched in April. A higher VIX indicates increasing volatility due to uncertainty and investor fear while a lower VIX indicates a stable period and positive investor sentiment. Multiple reasons seem to be weighing on the markets and contributing to the rising uncertainty.
As per PhillipCapital, low voter turnout in the first three phases of voting have hurt market sentiment. Foreign outflows spiked to ₹5076 crore in May, NSDL data revealed. FII selling is being triggered both by high U.S bond yields as well as the outperformance of the Chinese and Hong Kong markets.
"China and Hong Kong markets are cheap with PEs around 10 while India is expensive with double the PE of these markets", VK Vijaykumar of Geojit Financial Services told Business Today.
Nifty closed the day at 21,957 while the Sensex closed at 72,404. Oil and gas and construction companies led the losses. L&amp;T was the biggest laggard on the Nifty index falling over 5%.

This ban on net selling during the opening and closing periods of trading represents a significant tightening of the government's control over market activity. Among the Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Nestle, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries were the major laggards.
Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, JSW Steel, NTPC, Power Grid and IndusInd Bank were among the gainers. Global oil benchmark Brent crude declined 0.20 per cent to USD 81.27 a barrel.
Stock exchanges conducted a one-hour special Muhurat trading session on the occasion of Diwali on November 12.

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty rallied for a second straight session on Monday following buying in index heavyweight IT counters and Reliance Industries amid optimism in Asian markets.
The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 234 points or 0.38% to settle at 61,963.68. During the day, it jumped 314.78 points or 0.50% to 62,044.46.
The NSE Nifty rallied 111 points or 0.61% to end at 18,314.40.
Among the Sensex firms, Tech Mahindra, Wipro, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, HCL Technologies, Larsen &amp; Toubro, ITC, Sun Pharma, NTPC and Titan were the major gainers.
Nestle, Axis Bank, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel were the laggards.
All the ten listed Adani group stocks ended with significant gains as a Supreme Court-appointed expert committee said it has found no evidence of stock price manipulation in group companies, while a separate Sebi probe into alleged violation in money flows from offshore entities has "drawn a blank".
Adani Enterprises zoomed 18.84% and Adani Wilmar jumped 10%, the biggest gainers among the ten listed group firms.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong ended in the positive territory. Markets in Europe were trading on a mixed note. The US market had ended marginally lower on Friday.
"The domestic market inched higher in anticipation of possible progress in US debt ceiling negotiations. Despite a weak fourth-quarter performance, IT stocks rebounded on account of bargain opportunities and pent-up demand. Investors remain watchful ahead of the release of US FOMC minutes on Wednesday, as the minutes may give some indication of a pause on rate hikes," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services.
Meanwhile, global oil benchmark Brent crude climbed 0.03% to USD 75.60 per barrel.
The Sensex climbed 297.94 points or 0.48% to settle at 61,729.68 on Friday. The Nifty advanced 73.45 points or 0.41% to end at 18,203.40.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 113.46 crore on Friday after remaining buyers for a number of days, according to exchange data.
