Initial Mission Plans and Setbacks
Williams and Wilmore launched aboard Boeing's Starliner on June 5, 2024, as part of its first crewed flight under NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The mission, initially intended to last just one week, aimed to evaluate the Starliner's performance in launch, docking, and landing phases. However, technical issues with the spacecraft forced an early return of the capsule to Earth&mdash;without the astronauts onboard&mdash;leading to significant delays in their planned journey back. 
Challenges with Return Timelines
Originally expected to return in February 2025, their return has now been postponed to late March or early April 2025. The delay arises from additional time required by SpaceX to prepare a new Crew Dragon capsule to accommodate the astronauts. NASA explored alternate options, including using a different SpaceX capsule, but ultimately decided to extend their stay until the new capsule is ready for launch.

SpaceX Steps in to Provide a Solution
After deeming Boeing&rsquo;s Starliner unsuitable for the astronauts' return due to persistent malfunctions and safety concerns, NASA partnered with SpaceX to adjust its Crew-9 mission. SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule will now bring Williams and Wilmore back to Earth, underscoring its pivotal role in NASA's current operations.

Astronaut Sunita Williams will be celebrating her 59th birthday in space on September 19th. Her current mission, originally planned for 7 days, has been extended until February 2025. To mark this special occasion, 'Saregama' and 'The Womb' have come together to celebrate her&nbsp; achievements with a musical tribute.
The song 'Baar Baar Din Yeh Aaye,' from the movie Farz, sung by Jeetendra to Babita, whose name was also 'Sunita' in the song, has been chosen to honour Sunita Williams. Many Bollywood celebrities, including Karan Johar, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Jeetendra, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Anup Jalota, Salim Merchant, and Neeti Mohan, have recorded themselves singing the birthday song to show their love and admiration for Sunita.
Along with celebrities, students from over 700 schools across India, including Euro Kids, Kangaroo Kids, Billabong High International School, Centre Point School, are also participating in the celebration. These students will be singing the song and creating birthday cards for Sunita Williams.

A recent study published in Nature Medicine has shed light on the effects of space travel on the human body, specifically the phenomenon of space anaemia.
Researchers found that astronauts experience a reduction in red blood cell mass during long-duration space flight, which can have long-term implications for their health.
On Earth, our bodies create and destroy 2 million red blood cells every second. However, according to the study, the bodies of the astronauts were destroying 3 million per second, or 54% more than on Earth.
Space anaemia affects astronauts during and after their extended space missions. Unlike anaemia on Earth, space anaemia is primarily due to the body&rsquo;s adaptation to the unique environment of space.
In microgravity, the body undergoes significant fluid shifts due to the absence of Earth's gravitational pull, which normally helps regulate the distribution of blood and fluids. Without gravity, bodily fluids move upward, toward the head. This upward shift affects blood volume and influences the production of red blood cells. &nbsp; What are the implications of space anaemia?
Although space anaemia itself is not life-threatening, its effects on astronauts&rsquo; health are significant and should not be overlooked. According to Indian Express, if not properly managed, this condition can lead to several long-term health issues.

<h3>Why do we lose bone density in space?</h3>
In space, because of the lack of gravity, there is a rapid decrease in both muscle mass and bone density. In space, bones carry no weight, causing them to lose density as they are not subjected to the same stresses they experience on Earth.
Dr Sreenivasachary Avancha, senior consultant, Gleneagles Hospitals, LB Nagar, Hyderabad revealed to Indian Express how muscle mass (sarcopenia) and bone density (osteoporosis) can significantly impact the body, both on Earth and in space.
She revealed, "On Earth, sarcopenia leads to reduced strength, balance, and mobility, increasing the risk of falls and fractures. Osteoporosis causes bones to become fragile and more susceptible to breaks. Together, these conditions can severely impair quality of life and independence."
The doctor explained how without the gravitational forces that provide resistance, muscles weaken rapidly, and bones lose minerals. They lose minerals like calcium, at a much faster rate than on Earth. This results in decreased bone density and muscle strength which poses serious health risks when they are returning to Earth.
<h3>Role of food in space</h3>
Food plays a major role in space missions as they help keep the astronauts fit and active. NASA assures that the food sent on such missions are thoroughly analysed. As per data called Space Food and Nutrition by NASA, diets are designed to supply each crew member with all the recommended dietary allowances of vitamins and minerals necessary to stay in space.
As per the same report, foods flown in space are researched and developed in the Foods Systems Engineering Facility.
<h3>Which foods are sent to space?</h3>
As per NASA, foods are first tested for nutritional value, how well they freeze dry, the storage and packaging process, and of course taste. They make sure to ask the astronauts to taste-test food items. They use a simple form to rate the food items - colour, odour, flavour.

According to the expert, preventative measures, such as resistance exercises and adequate nutrition, are crucial both on Earth and in space. Make sure to practice weight-bearing activities and consume a diet rich in protein and calcium.

This superbug, which can infect the respiratory system, has evolved and become more potent within the closed environment of the space station. The bacteria have travelled to the ISS as hidden co-passengers over time and have adapted to the unique conditions of space.
Sunita Williams and her colleague, Astronaut Barry Eugene "Butch" Wilmore, arrived at the ISS on June 6, 2024, aboard the new Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
