Under-prepared drop-in tracks, poor ground conditions, over-dependence on Indian TV audience, not factoring in weather and steep ticket prices were only some of the problems that didn't make America the most viable commercial destination for a global event like the T20 World Cup, in the first attempt. However, the only takeaway is the United States national team's stupendous show to beat Pakistan and give India a run for their money before entering the Super Eights on its debut on the world stage.
There are only a few things that money can't buy and the performances by Saurabh Netravalkar and Monank Patel were indeed priceless, something that would give the pin-striped suits of ICC sitting in Dubai, a chance to heave a sigh of relief despite a lot of things that didn't go right during two-and-a-half weeks.
For any team sport to do well and gain popularity in a particular geographical region, it is imperative that there is some sense of nationalism associated with it and the H1B visa holders and Green Card acquiring Indians have given them that opportunity.
Cricket in America has been ICC's pet project for a long time and having T20 included in the 2028 Olympics programme for the Los Angeles edition is a big leap in that direction.

The mouth-watering proposition of India vs USA in New York, however, needed a bit more than just hype and not testing the tracks was a juvenile mistake.
The pitch was pilloried for its uneven bounce during India's opening match against Ireland when balls were flying from length after hitting the cracks.

A total of 56 maximums were hit in 8 games and at an average of seven per game, which isn't the best advertisement for the promotion of the game in an unchartered territory where the viewership is dependent on the Indian diaspora. In one IPL match alone this season, 42 sixes were hit, which is the other end of the spectrum.
As far as the native Americans, who have grown up on a liberal dose of New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are concerned, you would need more action than scores like 95, 113, and 119 to bring the footfalls.
Coming back to the timing, if one wants regular series, matches need to be held in the evening unless it's just catering to the broadcasters' demand of 8 pm IST timing which means that on weekdays, you will not have big crowds in the future.
The broadcasters never show but there were enough empty seats during the match against Ireland which was a mid-week fixture.
The minimum price of tickets for an India vs Pakistan game was USD 300 and the highest for a corporate box was USD 10,000.
Sample this: The lowest ticket price for a New York Yankees baseball game is USD 46 while in the case of basketball, La Lakers and Chicago Bulls have lowest priced tickets at much less than USD 54 and 34 respectively.
The question arises apart from the Asian community will ICC be able to attract the native Americans? The answer currently is an emphatic 'No'.
Florida's Fort Lauderhill has been the cricket world's 'go to' destination for international games and Indian teams have been playing T20Is for some time now.
Being a coastal area, Florida is always affected by inclement weather and flash floods but ICC couldn't arrange for full ground cover, which wouldn't have led to three washouts in three days.

"I thought it was a great performance from the bowling team. Swing was around and all-round a professional performance. It's really important and great to qualify for the super eights," said Marsh after the thumping win on Tuesday night.
He reserved special praise for Zampa, who has tallied eight wickets in three games.
"If you look at his career over the last 4-5 years, he is probably our most important player. He loves the pressure and he is bowling well at the moment and we are lucky to have him," he added.
Australian opening duo of David Warner (20 off 8) and Head (34 off 17) were in a hurry to get the job done, giving the team a flying start.
Both collected boundaries on either side of the wicket before Warner was caught at mid-off in the second over.
Marsh joined Head and unleashed a few punchy drivers on the off-side as Australia cantered to a comprehensive win.
Earlier, skipper Gerhard Erasmus top-scored for Namibia with 36 off 43 balls. Reeling at 43 for eight, Namibia managed to cross the 50-run mark courtesy of a lone hand from Erasmus.
"You can't sit back against the best in the world. The skill gap is there, we tried to close that by fighting fire with fire but we did not do that in this tournament so far," said Erasmus.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj was lucky to defend 11 runs in the final over as South Africa held their nerves to beat Bangladesh by a mere four runs in yet another low-scoring thriller in the T20 World Cup here on Monday.
In a contest where fortunes swung from one side to another, Bangladesh fought valiantly until the end riding on gritty knocks from Mahmudullah (20) and Towhid Hridoy (37), but could not land the killer punch in the 20th over chasing a modest 114.
With six needed off last two balls, Mahmudullah was caught near the ropes excellently by Aiden Markram off Keshav Maharaj (3/27), who was South Africa&rsquo;s most successful bowler. The left-arm spinner bowled three full tosses in the final over but the Bangladesh batters were not able to put them away to end at 109 for seven.
Anrich Nortje (2/17) continued to make the most of his form and Kagiso Rabada (2/19) and Marco Jansen (0/17) provided strong support.
South Africa had recovered to post 113 for six after opting to bat on what has proved to be a challenging surface.
Tanzid Hasan (9) perished early in the run chase after hitting a couple of fours while neither their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (14 off 23) nor Litton Das (9 off 13) could convert starts.
Shakib Al Hasan (3) too was beaten by Nortje&rsquo;s pace when the right-armer bowled one short and the Bangladesh all-rounder mishit to lob one high in the sky.
Struggling at 50 for four, Bangladesh found an excellent partnership between Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah, who put on 44 for the fifth wicket to take their side close to the finish line.
Hridoy, who began with a six, did well to absorb the pressure in the company of Mahmudullah.
The pair kept shaving off the target with smart rotation of strike as well as picking up the odd boundary, signalling that the wicket really has rewards for those who were able to alter their approach.
Bangladesh seemed to be cruising towards the target until Hridoy's dismissal &mdash; leg-before off Rabada in the 18th over &mdash; changed the complexion of the game.

Tanzim struck thrice in his opening burst to leave South Africa reeling at 23 for four inside the first five overs.
After Quinton de Kock (18) showed aggressive intent by hitting the right-arm bowler for a six and a four in the initial exchanges, Tanzim made immediate amends to his line and length and hit Reeza Hendricks in front of the stumps for a golden duck.
In fact, it was his simple yet effective tactics of bowling at the wickets paid high dividends as Tanzim cleaned up South Africa captain Aiden Markram (4), who missed a straight one with his bat coming down a bit awkwardly.
Tristan Stubbs (0) had done a fine job of rebuilding the innings for South Africa in their last outing against the Netherlands, but the right-hander too had a soft dismissal to endure.
Klaasen hit a couple of sixes upfront against Bangladesh spinners to push them back while Miller was content in rotating the strike. However, he was cleaned up by Taskin late in the innings after a 44-ball knock, studded with two fours and three sixes.
Klaasen and Miller did find run-scoring difficult on the Nassau County pitch since they were forced to curb their attacking instinct.

Sachin Tendulkar handed out dozens of cricket kits to kids from cricket clubs around New York on Thursday - it's part of DP World's 'Beyond Boundaries' initiative aimed at empowering communities through improved access to cricket.
The smart logistics provider has now used its global network to deliver 2,000 kits to grassroots organisations across four countries on three continents via eight repurposed shipping containers.
50 containers have been built which serve as pavilions, kit storage and scoreboards
The New York delivery came two days after the USA's historic victory over cricket giants Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.
"These kind of performances inspire the next generation. You need local heroes. And the way the team played was magnificent. I thoroughly enjoyed it" said DP World's Global Ambassador.
Containers have already been delivered to grassroots cricket in India, the UAE and South Africa.
"We need to take these initiatives and spread them across the globe, go and play exhibition games and globalise this beautiful sport. You've seen the reflection of what started long back in America."
Flanked by his old India teammate Ravi Shastri, and DP World Chief Communications Officer, Daniel van Otterdijk Tendulkar, distributed kits to beneficiaries from the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) and the Commonwealth Cricket League, identified by the ICC as key groups promoting the game in New York.
One youngster from the local Stuyvesant Cricket club said "I was looking at the advertising board of Sachin Tendulkar working with DP World. and it just like sparked something in my brain. The fact that we're trying to, like, nationalise cricket everywhere in the USA. because I'm not going to lie, there's some discrimination on cricket, like, you know, from baseball kids. It feels nice that we have like this sense of Nationalism you know, in America."
"'Beyond Boundaries' is all about inspiring young people to get into the game of cricket. Cricket is a great social game. It brings societies together. It brings teams together" said van Otterdijk.

Following a Cricbuzz report suggesting that the winner of the second semifinal might have to play the final the very next day, it has been clarified that measures have been taken to avoid such a scenario. The additional four hours granted to the match are designed to prevent the team from having to play, travel, and then play again on consecutive days.
To provide more context, the first semifinal is scheduled to take place in Trinidad on June 26, starting at 8:30 PM local time (6:00 AM IST the next day). The organizers have set aside a reserve day for this match, allowing it to continue into June 27 if rain disrupts play.
In contrast, the second semifinal in Guyana has different playing conditions. This match is set to start at 10:30 AM local time on June 27 (8:30 PM IST). Unlike the first semifinal, this game must be completed on the same day. The ICC's decision to allocate an additional 250 minutes means that match officials can wait up to eight hours to finish the match. June 28 will be a travel day, with the final scheduled for June 29.
"All four teams have exactly the same opportunity to finish a game. For performance reasons, to ensure teams do not have to 'play, travel, play' on consecutive days, the decision was taken to allocate the additional time for the second semifinal immediately post the game because the game is a 10:30 AM start, whilst the first semifinal is an evening start, which means it is not feasible to play all additional time on the same day. This also ensures that fans in the stadium have the best chance of seeing a result on the day," as per a source quoted by Cricbuzz.

Sri Lanka have officially named their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, with notable inclusions such as pacer Matheesha Pathirana and the team's captain Wanindu Hasaranga, both of whom are returning from injuries. Matheesha Pathirana, currently recuperating from a hamstring issue, was part of this announcement. Rajasthan Royals captain Samson has for the first time in over a decade been a consistent performer for his IPL side but there is no way his No. 3 batting slot is going to get him a place in the India team.
Another school of thought is that someone like Samson, who has 25 T20Is under his belt but an average of just 20 and a strike rate of around 135, should not be considered based on just one good IPL season.
In case of Rahul, it can be said that one senior member of the coaching staff will certainly go all out to push for his inclusion but many believe that the stylish right-handed batter's approach in T20 cricket remains archaic.
However, he is still considered a better bet than Samson at No. 5 or 6 on slowish Caribbean tracks.
The other option, Jitesh Sharma, is in very poor form, while Dhruv Jurel hasn't got a chance to keep wickets. During the last game in Lucknow, he did get an opportunity to bat long and scored a fifty.
Left-handed batter Tilak Varma, who is also a handy off-spinner, remains an option along with pacer Sandeep Sharma, the Punjab veteran whose slower variations at the death have played a big role in Rajasthan Royals' surge to the top of the IPL table.&nbsp;

With the ICC making it mandatory to announce the provisional 15-member squad by the May 1 cut-off date, Ajit Agarkar and his colleagues have some straightforward choices to make if every member of the team is fit.
"There would not be any experimentation or left-field selections. All those who have played for India and have done well consistently in T20 Internationals and the IPL will be rewarded," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
It is understood that one among Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal might miss out but in case both proven performers are selected in the final 15, then only one among two finishers -- Kolkata Knight Riders' Rinku Singh and Chennai Super Kings' Shivam Dube -- will get the nod.
The other close call could be for the second wicketkeeper's slot where Sanju Samson has competition from Jitesh Sharma, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan.
Rahul and Kishan bat at the top of the order, and they haven't tried batting in the middle order in this IPL so far, which makes it difficult for the selectors to analyse their impact down the order.
Although Hardik Pandya's bowling fitness remains a concern, there is no immediate doubt about his selection. Much like him, Virat Kohli's inclusion is also a formality.
The other automatic selections are skipper Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. These 10 names, if fit, will definitely be on the flight across the Atlantic.
It is understood that Siraj is being rested by RCB as he has been playing constantly and needed workload management.
In the choice between Gill and Jaiswal, the former has scored more runs but in the case of Jaiswal, who has been a big find for Indian cricket, the selection committee might not give up easily on him merely for a few low IPL scores.
Also, being the only left-hander inside the top four is a novelty and in a largely unidimensional top order.
However, if Gill piles up enough runs, it will be a difficult choice unless the selectors accommodate both and drop one among Shivam and Rinku from the 15.
The reserve spinner's slot could also be a three-way battle between Axar Patel, a handy batter apart from being an accurate left-arm spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, who is yet to play a single T20 World Cup match in his nine-year international career, and Ravi Bishnoi, who plays for Lucknow Super Giants.
While Chahal is head and shoulders above the other two in terms of bowling skills, his repeated omissions from important squads leave a big question mark about his inclusion showpiece in June.
The likes of Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana have all performed well but it is understood that the selection committee would like to follow the process of easing them in via bilateral cricket instead of putting them to the test in a high-stakes World T20 game.
There are two white-ball series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka and these young men would be in line for their India debuts at that time. Nitish Reddy, who is a seam bowling all-rounder and was part of India's Emerging side that toured Sri Lanka last year, could also follow the same path.
It will be interesting to see if BCCI makes arrangements for the likes of Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana or Akash Madhwal to be taken as net bowlers, which will also give them good exposure.

India's 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies is likely to be named in the last week of April as the ICC's cut-off date for submission of teams is May 1, a BCCI source said on Saturday.
However, every participating team will get a chance to change players in their initial squad till May 25.
"The Indian team will be selected some time during the last week of April, the time by which the first half of IPL will be over and national selection committee will be in a position to assess form and fitness of the contenders," the senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
"The first batch of cricketers will leave for New York immediately after the end of the league stage of IPL on May 19. Those players, whose teams won't qualify for the final four will be going early, like it happened during WTC finals last year," the source added.
With the tournament being held in the USA and West Indies, it is expected that a few of the stand-bys will also travel with the team so that there is no logistical nightmare in case any player from the main squad gets injured or has to pull out due to unforeseen circumstances.
The four national selectors are travelling to watch most of the matches as this is the World Cup unlike other editions when they travel for a select few games but keep a track on TV.
It is learnt that there has been no instructions given to any of the Cup hopefuls about workload management as these two months they are under the franchise's control.
"Obviously, if any centrally contracted or targeted player gets injured, his case will automatically come under the purview of the NCA's Medicine and Sports Science team.
"Also for the centrally contracted players and targeted players (India A, Emerging India), the S&amp;C coaches and physios need to keep NCA in loop. But when players are contracted with franchises, BCCI can't dictate how many matches they will play. As far as bowlers are concerned, it is only four overs," the source added.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be the biggest event in the format so far, comprising 20 teams who will play 55 games across nine venues.
This is the first time USA is hosting the event, with 16 games being played across three venues.
Tickets for the semifinals in Trinidad and Guyana on June 26 and June 27 will also be available from Tuesday.

"Like when we were playing the ODI World Cup, we tried out many boys in T20s. They perform but when the main squad is announced, some boys have to be left out. So, it is disappointing for them. But our job is to bring clarity to the team.
"So, in the pool of 25-30 players we have, they know what is expected of each player. We have still not finalised the squad for the T20 World Cup, but obviously in the mind you know the 8-10 players who are going to play," he said on Wednesday night after the third and final T20 here.
Majority of the games will be played in the Caribbean where the pitches are expected to be on the slower side.
"In the West Indies, the conditions are quite slow, so we have to pick the squad accordingly. Again I say, Rahul bhai and I have tried to maintain clarity in the team. The one thing I have learnt from captaincy is that you can't keep everyone happy. You have to focus on the needs of the team," said the skipper.
After a couple of ducks, Rohit got back among the runs with a record fifth T20 hundred. In his memorable effort, the skipper also attempted reverse hits multiple times with the surface playing out a few tricks in the powerplay.
"I have been practising it a lot in the nets. You have to play some shots in order to put the bowlers under pressure. When the ball is spinning and you can't hit straight, you have to try something new.
"I have been practising reverse sweeps and sweeps for the past two years. You would have seen me play them once or twice in Test matches. You have the options and it's up to you how you are using those options.
"The ball was spinning and gripping today so, I thought I&rsquo;d play with the spin rather than step out and hit hard in front of the wicket," he said.
With the three games, Rohit also got up to speed with the team's plans for the World Cup.
"I had not played for one year, so I discussed ideas with Rahul bhai (Dravid). Although I was watching the games, I was not playing. I got an understanding of a few things, so we wanted to implement them and also do something different.
"We wanted our bowlers to bowl in a different way, someone wasn't comfortable bowling in the power play, so we had to use them there. Some were not comfortable bowling at the death, we asked them to bowl there," he added.

ICC's Event Director Chris Tetley informed that the high-profile Indo-Pak clash will be held at the Nassau County ground, which is 25 km from east of Manhattan and the temporary gallery that will hold "more spectators than any ground in England as well as the Wankhede Stadium" in Mumbai.
"We will be using drop-in pitches and it has already been constructed. We are utilising expertise of Adelaide Oval curator Damian Hough, one of the foremost exponents of drop-in pitches. He built the trays and overseen the installation of trays being grown in Florida at the moment under his supervision," Tetley told mediapersons during a select interaction facilitated by the ICC.
"There will be enough number of trays for the match pitches that we need and training facilities in New York. Playing surface will be brand new and we are levelling the surface, installing drainage facilities," he informed.
Looking at the potential of the US market, which has largely remained untapped, Tetley tried to rationalise the need for temporary seating infrastructure over a permanent one.
"All infrastructure will be temporary like it happens across the globe in sports. Companies we work with do this every day a week and on timelines. Some of the infrastructural equipment will come from the Las Vegas F1 and will be brought from Vegas to New York and installed and then de-constructed and put back where it needs to be," he said.
Tetley claimed that their research showed that "there are 30 million cricket fans in the United States and it has the third biggest broadcast market".
While the levelling of the outfield starts in February, Tetley is confident of maintaining the timelines given to the venue operators.
"Infrastructure building starts in February and then construction phase goes on till early May. And at that point 'drop-in pitches' will be trucked from Florida and final grass grows in and then till end of May is a testing phase. The 34,000 capacity will be bigger than any stadium in UK and Wankhede," said Tetley.
Obviously, the New York ground will be an untested territory and Tetley said that practice game and "systems testing" will be done before the first match is played at the venue.
In talks with MLC team to use the structure ============================== Tetley admitted that all structures will be dismantled after the end of the event but Major League Cricket (MLC) are in talks with ICC to use the Nassau County facility for the second season.
"After the tournament, structures will come down but MLC is interested to hold some of the matches of their second season and they are evaluating, whether it will work for them. We finish in June and they start in mid-July, so it's a conversation going on.
"The legacy will be a great outfield left behind and we will take out drop-in pitches and leave it with an artificial surface which will be easy to maintain."

Dominica will be unable to meet the deadline for completing the construction work of their stadiums and the government on Thursday announced its decision to withdraw from hosting the their allotted matches of the T20 World Cup next year.
Windsor Park was shortlisted to host one group match and two Super Eight games as Dominica was one of seven countries in the Caribbean shortlisted to host the T20 World Cup.
The T20 showpiece is being co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA from June 4-30 next year. "Several tangible actions were taken both at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium and at the Benjamin's Park including the commencement of upgrading and enhancement of the practice and match venues, various assessments and the creation of additional pitches where necessary," a statement from the Dominica government's read.
"However, the implementation timelines submitted by the various contractors revealed that it would not be possible to complete these works within the stipulated timeframe before the commencement of the tournament. As a result, a decision was taken not to host any of the matches in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 as it would not be prudent for the Government of Dominica to commit to hosting these games.
"In light of Dominica's sterling reputation in hosting international cricket, this decision is considered to be in the best interest of all. The Government of Dominica thanks Cricket West Indies (CWI) for its partnership over the years and looks forward to continued collaboration in the future. The Government of Dominica extends best wishes to the organisers for a successful tournament in June 2024." The ICC is yet to respond to the development.&nbsp;
