Yes, you heard that right! 92.5 lakh individuals and firms lost almost 52,000 crore rupess in the index derivatives segment of nse in the last financial year
&nbsp;This alarming data from market regulator SEBI has put the spotlight on the growing concerns around futures and options trading. &nbsp;To tackle it, SEBI has now proposed a set of measures based on the recommendations from an expert panel. Let's break down these key proposals.
First up, SEBI aims to rationalise the existing strike price introduction methodology. It wants strike interval to be uniform near prevailing price, that is around four percent. As the strike moves away from the prevailing price, the interval will increase from around 4% to 8%.
&nbsp;Also, currently there are 70 strikes where trading happens. SEBI wants to reduce this number to 50.
&nbsp;Next, SEBI proposes increasing the minimum value of derivatives contracts from 5-10 lakh rupees to 15-20 lakh in the first phase and then to 20-30 lakh rupees in the second phase.
&nbsp;This move is expected to reduce the number of retail investors in this high-risk segment.
 &nbsp;To prevent undue intraday leverage and discourage the practice of allowing positions beyond collateral, SEBI suggests mandating the upfront collection of options premiums from buyers, similar to current practices for futures contracts.
Given the volume skew on expiry days, SEBI proposes eliminating margin benefits for calendar spread positions involving contracts expiring on the same day.
&nbsp;SEBI also recommends that position limits for index derivative contracts be monitored on an intraday basis by clearing corporations or stock exchanges, with a phased implementation plan to accommodate necessary technology changes.
&nbsp;To streamline trading, SEBI suggests that weekly options contracts should only be provided on a single benchmark index of an exchange, reducing the current five-day expiry system.
And finally, to address high implicit leverage near contract expiry, SEBI proposes increasing the extreme loss margin (elm) by 3 to 5 percent
&nbsp;These measures are designed to make futures and options trading less speculative and more regulated, addressing the significant losses faced by investors.
&nbsp;Brokerage firm jefferies notes that SEBI's new rules could directly impact nearly 35% of the F&amp;O volumes.

SEBI's latest report reveals these shocking trends in the stock market. In its report dated July 24,
The market regulator has revealed that in the last financial year, 71% of intraday traders in the cash segment of the stock market lost money.
And here's the kicker &ndash; 76% of these unfortunate traders were under 30 years old.
This study covers periods before and after Covid-19, in order to comparatively analyse the trends from both phases. It shows that after Covid-19, india has witnessed a massive surge in new demat accounts. This trend is also reflected in market levels &ndash;
On March 23, 2020, a day before the indian government announced a nationwide lockdown, the sensex tanked to an intraday low of 25,880. Since then, in a period of less than four years, it has skyrocketed past 80,000. This bull run has lured many young people into the market, creating a trap for them.
And a quick look at the numbers from the sebi report makes it clearer -- the number of intraday traders in the cash segment tripled between Financial Year 2019 and Financial Year 2023.
Back in FY19, only 18% of intraday traders were under 30. Fast forward to FY23, and that number has surged to 48%.
Also, participation from Tier-1, Tier-2, and Tier-3 cities increased three-fold, five-fold, and ten-fold respectively during this period.
Now, all these numbers have regulators and policymakers concerned. In fact, recently, SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch talked about the unexpected surge in futures and options trading volumes and the associated losses, particularly among young investors.
As a response to these worries, FinanceMminister Nirmala Sitharaman increased the Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on F&amp;O trading, trying to curb the heavy trading frenzy.

Maintaining a BUY rating on Reliance, Jefferies sets a target price of 3,580 rupees per share, indicating a 14% potential upside. In June, Reliance Jio Infocomm announced new tariff plans featuring unlimited data, aimed at enhancing monetization and expanding its subscriber base. The prospective listing of Reliance Jio will intensify competition among telecom giants like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. This milestone follows a brief crossing of the 80,000 threshold by the Sensex on Wednesday. The Sensex achieved this landmark in just 138 sessions, marking its fastest rise to date. Among the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tata Consultancy Services were the biggest gainers.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has established a new institutional mechanism requiring stock brokers to implement systems for detecting and preventing market abuse. Previously, there were no specific regulatory provisions mandating brokers to have such preventive systems.
<h3>Preventive Systems</h3>
Under this new framework, both broking firms and their senior management are now accountable for identifying and preventing fraud or market abuse. They are required to establish robust surveillance and control systems, along with appropriate escalation and reporting mechanisms.
SEBI has outlined various instances of potential market abuse that brokers' systems must be capable of monitoring. These include creating a misleading appearance of trading, price manipulation, front running, pump and dump schemes, insider trading, mis-selling, unauthorized trading, and facilitating mule accounts. Brokers must report any detected suspicious activity to the stock exchanges within 48 hours of detection.
Additionally, brokers are required to submit a summary analysis and action taken report on suspicious activities, fraud, and market abuse on a half-yearly basis. This report must be submitted even if no such instances are detected, in the form of a 'nil report'.
Deviations in adherence to internal controls, risk management policies, surveillance policies, and client onboarding procedures must be reported to the appropriate committee or board of directors. These deviations should also be included in the half-yearly report to the stock exchanges.
SEBI mandates that stock brokers establish and implement a whistleblower policy, providing a confidential channel for employees and stakeholders to report suspected fraudulent or unethical practices. The policy must ensure adequate protection for whistleblowers.
The regulator has also tightened rules to curb trading through mule accounts, which are trading accounts controlled by another person. Transactions through mule accounts for manipulative or fraudulent practices are deemed to fall under the Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices (PFUTP) norms.
These amendments to the stock brokers and PFUTP rules became effective on June 27.

Zerodha CEO and CO-founder Nithin Kamath in a post in X has noted that SEBI's transparent pricing move will have significant impact on brokers, traders, and investors. In a Circular, the Indian market regulator SEBI has mandated all the market infrastructure institutions including the stock exchanges to be "true to the label" in how they levy charges

<h3>Brokerages may tweak prices</h3>
Usually, the stock exchanges charge brokers a transaction fee based on the total turnover they contribute in a month. The transaction fee is inversely proportional to the turnover. By this, higher the turnover, lower the transaction fees.
Brokers receive a rebate which is the difference between what the brokers charge the customer and what the exchange charges the broker at the end of the month.&nbsp;
Nithin Kamath in the post in X stated that the rebates account for 10% of Zerodha's revenues, while this accounts for 10-50% for other brokers across the industry. He further went on to say that with SEBI's new circular, brokers will no longer earn these rebates.
Kamath reasoned that the zerodha was able to offer free equity delivery trades because the F&amp;O trading revenues were subsiding equity delivery investors. However, he predicts that this could now change as Zerodha may have to introduce a brokerage fee for equity delivery investments, which is currently free, or/and increase F&amp;O brokerage.
"We were one of the last remaining brokers that offered free equity delivery trades. We could do this because F&amp;O trading revenues were subsiding equity delivery investors. With the new circular, we will, in all likelihood, have to let go of the zero brokerage structure and/or increase brokerage for F&amp;O trades," Kamath said in the post

Indian equity benchmarks slipped on Tuesday as heavyweight financial stocks and Reliance Industries dragged the indices lower. Investors remained cautious ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's December 18 meeting, closely monitored for insights into its future interest rate cut trajectory.
At 09:20 a.m. IST, the NSE Nifty 50 declined by 0.3% to 24,599 points, while the BSE Sensex shed 0.3% to 81,492.02.
Out of the 13 major sectors, 10 traded in the red.
Key Drags on the Market
HDFC Bank fell 0.4% following a warning letter from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The market regulator alleged that the bank&rsquo;s disclosures surrounding the resignation of a senior employee were non-compliant with specific provisions.
Reliance Industries declined nearly 1%, pulling the energy index down by 0.5%.
On a positive note, broader markets, including small- and mid-cap stocks, showed marginal gains, providing some support.
Global Factors in Focus

Russia&rsquo;s state oil firm Rosneft has agreed to supply nearly 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude to Indian private refiner Reliance in the biggest-ever energy deal between the two countries, three sources familiar with the deal said.
The 10-year agreement amounts to 0.5% of global supply and is worth roughly $13 billion a year at today&rsquo;s prices. It would further cement energy relations between India and Russia, which is under heavy Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.
Rosneft did not reply to requests for comments.
Reliance said it works with international suppliers, including from Russia, and deals are based on market conditions. The company declined further comment on commercial matters, citing the confidentiality of supply agreements.
The deal comes ahead of the planned visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to India and after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said he wants to push Moscow and Kyiv to stop the war as soon as he takes office in January.
 Russian oil accounts for more than a third of India&rsquo;s energy imports. India became the largest importer of Russian crude after the European Union, previously the top buyer, imposed sanctions on Russian oil imports in response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
India has no sanctions on Russian oil, so refiners there have cashed in on the cheaper crude supply. Sanctions have made Russian oil cheaper than rival grades by at least $3 to $4 per barrel.
India&rsquo;s rising Russian imports have come at the expense of rival Middle Eastern producers. The Reliance-Rosneft deal would represent another challenge for competitors, including Saudi Arabia.
Competition among oil producers for a share of the Indian market is hot because it is one of the fastest-growing energy markets, and is becoming more important as a driver of global demand as growth in top importer China slows.
Under the deal, Rosneft would deliver 20-21 Aframax-sized cargoes (80,000 to 100,000 metric tons) of various Russian crude grades and three cargoes of about 100,000 tons each of fuel oil each month, the three sources said.
The shipments will be supplied for Reliance&rsquo;s refining complex, the world&rsquo;s biggest, at Jamnagar in the western state of Gujarat.
Two sources said Reliance and Rosneft will review pricing and volumes every year under the deal to factor in oil markets dynamics.
In 2024, Reliance had a deal with Rosneft to purchase 3 million barrels of crude a month. Rosneft has been also selling crude to Reliance via intermediaries on a regular basis.
The new deal accounts for roughly a half of Rosneft&rsquo;s seaborne oil exports from Russian ports, which leaves not much supply available for other traders and middlemen, one source said.
From January to October, Reliance imported an average 405,000 barrels per day of Russian oil, up from 388,500 bpd in the same period last year, according to tanker data obtained from sources.
The new deal between Rosneft and Reliance was discussed and approved during Rosneft&rsquo;s board meeting in November, two of the sources said.
Supplies will start from January and are set to continue for 10 years with an option to extend the deal for another 10 years, the three sources said.
The pricing of the grades to be supplied on delivered basis is set at differentials to the average Dubai price of the loading month, according to the sources.
Premiums for the light sweet grades were set at around $1.50 a barrel for ESPO, Sokol at about $2 per barrel and Siberian Light at about $1 per barrel against Dubai quotes for 2025, one source said.
The majority of the supply will be medium-sulphur and diesel-rich Russian Urals that are most popular with Indian refiners and will be priced at a discount of $3 per barrel to Dubai quotes for the following year, two sources said.

This potential deal is poised to rank among India&rsquo;s largest private equity transactions, valuing Haldiram&rsquo;s at approximately ₹75,000-80,000 crore ($8.8-9.4 billion).
Competing Bidders and Strategic Moves
Alpha Wave Global, previously known as Falcon Edge, is competing with two formidable investor consortiums. One group is led by Blackstone, with backing from Singapore&rsquo;s GIC and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), while the other is spearheaded by Bain Capital in partnership with Temasek. These consortiums have also tabled firm bids for a 15-20% stake in Haldiram&rsquo;s.
Haldiram&rsquo;s founding Agarwal family had initially explored selling a controlling interest in the 87-year-old company but shifted focus to divesting a minority stake.
The company&rsquo;s recent merger, approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI), unified its Delhi and Nagpur factions. Post-merger, the Delhi faction holds 56% of the stake, while the Nagpur faction controls 44%.
Future IPO Plans
The Agarwal family is also contemplating a public listing following the stake sale, targeting a valuation of ₹93,500 crore ($11 billion). Private equity bidders see a potential IPO within 12-24 months as a critical monetization strategy.
Why Haldiram&rsquo;s?
The interest in Haldiram&rsquo;s highlights the growth potential of India&rsquo;s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. The snack giant&rsquo;s strong market position and robust financial performance have attracted global investment heavyweights. Alpha Wave Global, known for its investments in Indian tech ventures like Lenskart and Swiggy, marks a strategic pivot with its bid for Haldiram&rsquo;s.
Challenges in Valuation and Control
The Agarwal family has maintained a minimum valuation of $10 billion, a figure that has stalled negotiations with previous suitors, including Tata Consumer Products, Kellogg&rsquo;s, and PepsiCo. Shares of e-commerce platform FirstCry's parent Brainbees Solutions Ltd on Tuesday listed with a premium of 40 per cent against the issue price of Rs 465.
The stock made its debut at Rs 625, a jump of 34.40 per cent from the issue price on the BSE. Later, it surged 52 per cent to Rs 707.05.
At the NSE, it listed at Rs 651, reflecting a sharp rally of 40 per cent.
The company's market valuation stood at Rs 34,741.21 crore.
The initial public offer of Brainbees Solutions received 12.22 times subscription on the closing day of bidding on Thursday.
The Rs 4,194 crore initial share sale had a price band of Rs 440-465 a share.
The public issue of Pune-based Brainbees Solutions had a fresh issue of equity shares valued at Rs 1,666 crore and an OFS (Offer For Sale) component of up to 5.44 crore shares worth Rs 2,528 crore by existing shareholders.
The company will use net proceeds from the fresh issue for setting up stores under the brand 'BabyHug', investment in subsidiaries, overseas expansion, and sales and marketing initiatives. Besides, a portion will be used for corporate general purposes.
Launched in 2010, FirstCry is India's largest multi-channel, multi-brand retailing platform for mothers', babies' and kids' products. It was set up to create a one-stop destination for parenting needs across commerce, content, community engagement, and education, based on brand affinity, loyalty and trust of customers.
Further, FirstCry established itself in the UAE and Saudi Arabia in 2019 and 2022, respectively.

Hindenburg Research has accused SEBI Chief Madhabi Puri Buch of having stakes in offshore funds linked to the Adani Group, raising concerns about SEBI's impartiality. Buch has refuted the claims, but the controversy has sparked debate.

"Something big soon India" --
this tweet by US-based short seller firm Hindenburg Research on August 10th set the cats among pigeons, making many wonder who was in the bull's eye this time.
The last time the American short seller targeted India in January 2023, it had trained its guns at Adani Group, one of India's leading business conglomerates. Their latest announcement left many guessing which business house would be targeted this time.
But Hindenburg Research surprised everyone with its latest target, coming after Madhabi Puri Buch, the chief of India's market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). They accused her of having stakes in offshore funds linked to the Adani Group.
The US-based short seller stated and I quote, "The current SEBI Chairperson and her husband, Dhaval Buch, had hidden stakes in the exact same obscure offshore Bermuda and Mauritius funds, found in the same complex nested structure, used by Vinod Adani." &ndash; end of quote.
After making the allegations, Hindenburg Research concluded and I quote again, "We Do Not Think SEBI Can Be Trusted As An Objective Arbiter In The Adani Matter." &ndash; end of quote
However, the Buchs didn't take these allegations lying down. In a detailed statement, Madhabi and Dhaval Buch slammed Hindenburg Research's claims as 'baseless' and 'malicious.'
They clarified that their investments in offshore funds were made well before Madhabi joined SEBI.
They also emphasized that all necessary disclosures were made, and Madhabi recused herself from any SEBI decisions involving potential conflicts of interest.
SEBI also weighed in, backing its chief. The regulator confirmed that Madhabi Puri Buch made all relevant disclosures and recused herself from any decisions that could pose a conflict of interest.
SEBI reiterated that it has thoroughly investigated Hindenburg's allegations against Adani, and the last of its 26 investigations is nearing completion.
However, Hindenburg wasn't convinced. The firm responded by doubling down on their allegations, suggesting that Buch and her husband's financial dealings were deliberately concealed ahead of her appointment as SEBI chairperson. They even hinted at the possibility of Buch shielding Adani-linked entities from regulatory scrutiny.
The crossfire between Hindenburg Research and the SEBI chief had policy, business, and market circles abuzz. Some industry leaders slammed the American short-seller for what they see as an unjustified attack on SEBI's credibility, while others argue these allegations, if proven true, could have serious implications for India's regulatory framework.
Commenting on the new report by Hindenburg Research, Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said the regulators have already made a statement, as has SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch, and "the government had nothing further to add."
Meanwhile, The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) expressed support for SEBI chief Madhabi Puri Buch, accusing Hindenburg of seeking to "create a trust deficit in the market ecosystem".
The association also called the report "an attempt to undermine Buch's contributions to India's capital market."
Investment guru Vijay Kedia also slammed Hindenburg Research. He tweeted: &nbsp; "Turns out, the Hindenburg wasn't so smart, Its blackmail plan fell apart, So now it's remembered, not for its threats, But for going down in a fiery mess..."
Market expert Deepak Shenoy called the report sensational. He tweeted, "Thoda zyada ho gaya, i feel, basically they have gone into sensationalism. There is hardly any substance."
 The latest allegations by Hindenburg Research also triggered a political war of words. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was quick to seize the moment, claiming that SEBI's integrity had been 'gravely compromised'.
The BJP, on the other hand, countered Gandhi's remarks, accusing him of politicising the issue to target Prime Minister Modi and the government.
So, where does this leave us? As SEBI continues its investigation into the Adani Group, the spotlight remains firmly on Madhabi Puri Buch.
While the Buchs and SEBI maintain that the allegations are unfounded, Hindenburg's persistence suggests this battle is far from over.
