'Women shouldn't go to police stations after dark': BJP leader's comment causes uproar

In a statement that may not reflect well on the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh, BJP national vice-president Baby Rani Maurya has said that women should not go to police stations alone after dark.

While addressing a group of women in Varanasi, the former Uttarakhand governor said that even though a female officer is present at the police help desk, women should not go to police stations after 5pm or after it is dark. Go next morning or take a male family member along if its necessary, she added.

After an uproar over her comment, Maurya said that her comment has been twisted and taken out of context.

Her comment comes at a time when opposition is attacking the BJP government over several incidents of police brutality in Uttar Pradesh.

Earlier this week man called Arun Valmiki died in police custody in Agra. The police have also been accused of misbehaving with female members of Valmiki's family.
