You may have heard of the '5-second rule' where it's believed that food dropped on the floor is safe to eat if picked up within 5 seconds. Let's break your bubble and tell you that's it's just a myth.

    '5-second rule' myth busted

Gastroenterologist Dr. Palaniappan Pal emphasizes that food dropped on the floor can be contaminated by a wide range of bacteria, regardless of how quickly you pick it up. A 2016 study from Rutgers University, confirms that bacteria can contaminate food in less than a second upon contact with the floor, debunking the notion that a few seconds of contact make any kind of difference.

Side effects of eating food from the floor

Food Poisoning: Consuming food from the floor increases the risk of bacterial contamination, leading to foodborne illnesses such as food poisoning.

Gastrointestinal Infections: Bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus present on the floor can cause gastrointestinal infections upon ingestion.

Digestive Discomfort: Eating food from unsanitary surfaces may irritate the digestive system, leading to discomfort, bloating, and diarrhoea.

Increased Risk of Illness: Exposure to harmful bacteria from the floor heightens the likelihood of developing various illnesses and infections, compromising overall health.

How quickly can harmful bacteria and microbes contaminate food?

Harmful bacteria and microbes can contaminate food very quickly, often within seconds of contact with a contaminated surface. Studies have shown that bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus can transfer to food almost instantaneously upon contact with surfaces like countertops, floors, or utensils. Factors such as moisture, temperature, and surface texture can influence the rate of bacterial transfer. Therefore, it's essential to handle food safely, maintain clean surfaces, and minimize the risk of cross-contamination to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and ensure food safety.
