The rise in infections and diseases has put a central focus on all things 'immunity.' People are trying to eat better and there is a special emphasis on immunity-boosting diets. And when it comes to foods that protect our body from diseases, ginger is the first one that comes to mind. A spice known for its medicinal properties, ginger is used in everything from masala chai to yummy curries.

While there’s no denying the power of ginger, did you know that excessive use of ginger can also have some negative side effects on your health?

Here’s why you need to be mindful about not overdoing the spice:

    STOMACH TROUBLE

You’re adding ginger to your kaadha, having it in your ginger tea many times a day in an effort to boost your immune defences. On top of it, ginger is also being used in cooking vegetables, lentils, pickles and chutneys. But using ginger in everything and consuming it multiple times a day in the summer can upset your stomach and cause diarrhoea. So maybe reign it in a bit!

    HEARTBURN

Eating a balanced amount of ginger is beneficial, but if you use it excessively, then there may be a complaint of a burning sensation in your chest, especially during the hot summer months.

    BLOOD PRESSURE

People who are taking blood pressure medication are generally advised to avoid ginger. It is said that heavy consumption of ginger may aggravate heart conditions and can lead to irregularities in the heartbeat.

    PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS

For pregnant women, consuming more than 1,500 mg of ginger every day can increase the risk of miscarriage. Pregnant women must consult a doctor before using ginger during pregnancy.

    HEAVIER PERIODS

The ginger root is naturally hot and in the summer it can dilute the blood. If you overeat ginger during your periods, you might face a heavier and longer blood flow. This is why it is important to avoid ginger if you’re in a lot of pain while menstruating.

If you're wondering how much ginger is too much, experts suggest consuming a maximum of 3–4 grams of raw ginger per day. If you're pregnant or have significant medical conditions, it would be best to consult your doctor about your required dosage.
