The US Justice Department sued Google on Tuesday for its dominance of the online advertising market, launching a fresh legal battle against the California-based tech giant.
The U.S govt alleges that Google's plan to assert dominance has been to &ldquo;neutralise or eliminate&rdquo; rivals through acquisitions and to force advertisers to use its products by making it difficult to use competitors' products
The case was the second federal lawsuit against Google over alleged antitrust violations and the first since US President Joe Biden took office two years ago.
The earlier case targeted Google's world-dominating search engine and is expected to go to trial later this year.
In this latest suit, prosecutors took aim at Google's extremely profitable advertising business, asking that it be broken up to level the playing field for other companies.
Google's ad dealings generated more than $200 billion in sales in 2021 and is parent company Alphabet's biggest moneymaker by a wide margin.

The guide aims to ensure that individuals do not mislead their audiences when endorsing products or services and that they are in compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and any associated rules or guidelines, says Consumer Affairs Ministry

The government on January 20 made it mandatory for social media influencers to disclose their &lsquo;material&rsquo; interest in endorsing products and services and violations can attract strict legal action, including a ban on endorsements.
The regulations are part of continuing efforts to curb misleading advertisements as well as protect the interests of consumers amid the expanding social influencer market which is projected to be worth around Rs 2,800 crore by 2025.
The new guidelines named &lsquo;Endorsement Know Hows &mdash; for celebrities, influencers and virtual media influencers (Avatar or computer generated character) on social media platforms&rsquo; has been issued by the Department of Consumers Affairs.
In case of violation, the penalty prescribed for misleading advertisements under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 will be applicable.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) can impose a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh on manufacturers, advertisers and endorsers. For subsequent offences, a penalty of up to Rs 50 lakh can be imposed. The authority can prohibit the endorser of a misleading ad from making any endorsement for up to 1 year and for subsequent contravention, prohibition can extend up to 3 years.

Twitter says it will ease up on its 3-year-old ban on political advertising, the latest change by Elon Musk as he tries to pump up revenue after purchasing the social media platform last year.
The company tweeted late Tuesday that &ldquo;we're relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US." &ldquo;We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks," the company said from its Twitter Safety account.

At the time, then-CEO Jack Dorsey said that while internet ads are powerful and effective for commercial advertisers, &ldquo;that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.&rdquo; The latest move appears to represent a break from that policy, which had banned ads by candidates, political parties, or elected or appointed government officials.
Political advertising made up a sliver of Twitter's overall revenue, accounting for less than $3 million of total spending for the 2018 U.S. midterm election.
In reversing the ban, Twitter said that &ldquo;cause-based advertising can facilitate public conversation around important topics&rdquo; and that the change will align the platform's advertising policy with those of "TV and other media outlets,&rdquo; without providing further details.
Facebook in March 2021 lifted its ban on political and social issue ads that was put in place after the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Body spray manufacturer's Layer'r Shot has received massive backlash on social media for its two advertisements that viewers say make light of gang-rape and promote rape culture. 
One of the advertisement shows four boys in a grocery store talking about a 'shot' while standing behind a girl. As the girl angrily turns around to confront them, the video reveals that the boys were talking about Layer'r Shot body spray. 
In another advertisement, a young couple is seen sitting on a bed in a room when four boys suddenly open the door and say it is time for them to take a 'shot'. The girl seems a little alarmed till the video shows a boy moving past her to grab a bottle of the body spray from the bedside table. 
Several social media users posted the advertisements on their handles slamming Layer'r Shot for their word play and making casual jokes about gangrape.  Some users even tagged the Advertising Standards Council of India asking the ads to be taken off air. The regulator has responded to the tweets saying 'the ad is in serious breach of the ASCI Code and is against public interest. We have taken immediate action and notified the advertiser to suspend the ad, pending investigation.'
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered immediate suspension of the ads and asked social media platforms like YouTube and Twitter to remove them.

In a similar fashion, chain retailer Fabindia also withdrew an for its new festive line after backlash from right-wing Hindu groups. Known for its handcrafted fashion products, the brand was accused of using Urdu to name a collection for Diwali, a festival primarily celebrated by Hindus.
The promo campaign, which was titled Jashn-e-Riwaaz, an Urdu term meaning &lsquo;celebration of tradition&rsquo;, was eventually withdrawn after backlash.

Homegrown FMCG behemoth Dabur withdrew its Karva Chauth ad campaign featuring a lesbian couple celebrating the festival after several sections of social media it described as &ldquo;culturally inappropriate&rdquo;.

It was being advertised by Wilmore&nbsp;Funeral Home, or so it seemed.&nbsp;

Which led them to a website of the funeral home, that read, 'Get vaccinated now. If not, see you soon.'&nbsp;
'Get vaccinated now' was linked to the webpage of Star Med Healthcare, a local healthcare&nbsp;provider.&nbsp;
Star Med said that it was not responsible for the advertisement.&nbsp;
WBTV, a news channel, identified David Oakley, owner of BooneOakley, an advertisement agency to be the mind behind this ad.&nbsp;
'Wanted to do something with a different perspective', Oakley told WBTV, adding that he was worried about backlash&nbsp;before they started.&nbsp;
But even if one person got the vaccine because of the ad, it was worth it, according to him.&nbsp;
