Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the Congress of twisting facts and distorting his comments in the Rajya Sabha related to B R Ambedkar after BJP leaders "exposed" the opposition party's repeated "insults" to the architect of the Constitution.
Addressing a press conference here, Shah alleged that the Congress in the past has also misrepresented his and even PM Narendra Modi's comments to spread confusion and mislead people.
"I condemn the Congress for twisting facts. Why did it happen? It happened because BJP leaders spoke on how the NDA governments upheld the Constitution and established with facts that the Congress is anti-Ambedkar, anti-Constitution and anti-reservation," Shah told reporters here.
The senior BJP leader said the Congress also insulted V D Savarkar and blew to smithereens the values enshrined in the Constitution by imposing Emergency.
"When all these facts came out, the Congress used its old tricks and made an effort to mislead the society by presenting twisted facts," Shah said.
Shah said he comes from a party that can never insult Ambedkar.
Asked about Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge's demand for his resignation, the home minister said in a lighter vein that he can quit if this will make the Congress president happy but it will never solve his problems. He has to remain in his chair, a reference to his party being in the opposition, for 15 more years, Shah said.
Kharge, he added, has acted under Rahul Gandhi's pressure to be part of this "malicious" campaign against him by distorting his views on Ambedkar.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis expanded his cabinet, swearing in 39 ministers in Nagpur. BJP took 19 berths, Shiv Sena 11, and NCP 9. Following Mahayuti's 235-seat win, delays arose over portfolio disputes, with BJP retaining key ministries like home.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expanded his cabinet, more than three weeks after the assembly election results were declared. A total of 39 ministers were sworn in during a grand ceremony at Nagpur, Mr. Fadnavis&rsquo;s constituency. With this, the cabinet is nearly at full capacity, with 42 out of 43 possible berths occupied.
The new ministers include 19 from the BJP, 11 from the Shiv Sena, and 9 from the NCP. Notable BJP leaders who took the oath include state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Ashish Shelar, Ganesh Naik, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, Pankaja Munde, Girish Mahajan, Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Chandrakant Patil, and Nitesh Rane. From the Shiv Sena&rsquo;s Eknath Shinde faction, leaders such as Shambhuraj Desai, Dadaji Dagadu Bhuse, Sanjay Rathod, Uday Samant, Gulabrao Patil, and Sanjay Shirsat were inducted. The NCP&rsquo;s representation includes Aditi Tatkare, Dhananjay Munde, and Hasan Mushrif.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, along with Mr. Fadnavis, at the Raj Bhavan in Nagpur.
The expansion followed the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance&rsquo;s landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, where the coalition won 235 seats. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 132 seats, while the Shiv Sena secured 57 and the NCP won 41 seats.
This development comes after a delay attributed to disagreements over portfolio allocation. The tussle primarily revolved around key portfolios like the home ministry. Despite being Deputy Chief Minister in the previous term, Eknath Shinde&rsquo;s faction aimed to secure significant portfolios, including home, which the BJP was unwilling to relinquish. Ever since Mr. Fadnavis&rsquo;s first term as Chief Minister, he has held the home portfolio, even during Mr. Shinde&rsquo;s tenure as Chief Minister.
Mr. Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar had taken their oaths earlier on December 5 in Mumbai, in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leaders, and allies. The cabinet expansion solidifies the BJP&rsquo;s leadership within the coalition, balancing representation from its alliance partners.

West Bengal BJP's Murshidabad unit has announced plans to construct a Ram temple in Berhampore, days after TMC MLA Humayun Kabir proposed to set up a mosque modelled after the Babri Masjid at Beldanga in the same district.
The BJP said the temple&rsquo;s construction will begin on January 22, 2025, exactly one year after the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. BJP&rsquo;s Berhampore organisational district president, Shakharav Sarkar, said land for the temple has already been identified, and the project is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore.&nbsp;
"We have already identified a land in Beharampore area and the construction work for the Ram Temple based on the design of the temple on Ayodhya will begin soon," he told reporters.
Kabir, the TMC MLA from Beldanga, had on Tuesday announced plans for the mosque, which he said would honour the sentiments of the region&rsquo;s significant minority population.
His remarks have sparked political controversy, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to polarise communities for political gain.
The BJP&rsquo;s counterproposal to build a Ram temple is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its presence among the Hindu community in Murshidabad, a district where minorities make up around 75 per cent of the population.
Responding to the controversy, the TMC distanced itself from Kabir&rsquo;s remarks, describing them as his personal opinion.
&ldquo;The TMC has nothing to do with this statement of Kabir,&rdquo; a senior party leader said.&nbsp;
Kabir&rsquo;s announcement has also drawn criticism from the Congress, which accused him of playing divisive politics in a sensitive region.

Kirodi Lal Meena has resigned as a minister in the Rajasthan government following the BJP's underwhelming performance in the Lok Sabha polls in the state.
During the recently held elections, Meena (72) had said he would quit the Bhajan Lal Sharma government if the BJP loses any of the seven parliamentary seats under his responsibility.
The Rajasthan agriculture, rural development, disaster management and relief minister had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi assigned him the seven seats in eastern Rajasthan on which he worked hard during the polls.
But in the Lok Sabha poll results announced on June 4, the BJP lost some of these seats, including his native Dausa. Overall the BJP won 14 of the state's 25 seats, its tally coming down from 24 in the 2019 polls.
"Kirodi Meena resigned as minister. He gave the resignation to the chief minister 10 days back," an aide of the minister said.
On Thursday, Meena posted the famous Ramcharitramanas lines 'Raghukul reeti sada chali aai, pran jaai par vachan na jaai' on X to underline his unwavering intent to keep his promise at any cost.
Meena campaigned on eastern Rajasthan seats including Dausa, Bharatpur, Karauli- Dholpur, Alwar, Tonk-Sawaimadhopur and Kota-Bundi.
In the results declared last month, the BJP lost Dausa, Bharatpur, Karauli-Dholpur and Tonk-Sawai Madhopur.
Meena said he resigned to keep his word. "There is no reason for resentment. I have resigned. I did not go to the recent Cabinet meeting because if I had resigned. I could go morally. I had also met the CM. He had respectfully said that he will not accept the resignation," he told a news channel on Thursday.
Meena said he had already announced in public he would resign if the party does not win the seats he worked on.
He was also in the race of chief minister's post after the results of the assembly elections were announced in December last year, but the party high command picked up first-time MLA Bhajanlal Sharma to lead the state.
Kirodi Meena, who is a five-time MLA and former Rajya Sabha MP, has been a Lok Sabha MP from Dausa and Sawai Madhopur.

"It is not just one religion that talks about courage. In fact, all our religions talk about courage," Gandhi said in his debut speech as the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha that was watched by his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the visitors' gallery.
The Congress leader was speaking during the debate on the Motion of Thanks on the president's address to a joint sitting of Parliament.

Union Minister Suresh Gopi on Wednesday described former PM Indira Gandhi as the "mother of India" and late Congress Chief Minister K Karunakaran as a "courageous administrator".
The BJP leader also called Karnuakaran and Marxist veteran E K Nayanar as his "political gurus".
Gopi was speaking to reporters after visiting the memorial of Karunakaran, "Murali Mandiram" located in Punkunnam here.
Interestingly, Suresh Gopi had won Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency by dashing the hopes of Karunakaran's son and Congress leader K Muraleedharan who finished third in a triangular contest in the April 26 polls.

He explained that describing Karunakaran as the "father" of the Congress in Kerala was not a disrespect to the founders or co-founders of the grand old party in the southern state.
The actor-turned-politician also hailed the administrative capabilities of the Congress veteran and dubbed him as a "courageous administrator" of his generation.
He further said though he had expressed his desire to visit the Murali Mandiram in 2019 also, the veteran's daughter Padmaja Venugopal, who recently defected to the BJP, discouraged him due to political reasons.
Later, Suresh Gopi also visited the famous Lourde Mata Church in the city and offered prayers.
He and his family's presentation of a golden crown to the idol of St Mary during his daughter's marriage was used by his political opponents to target him, alleging that it was not made of yellow metal but copper.
Gopi won the Thrissur Lok Sabha seat, opening an account for the BJP in Kerala.
Thrissur had witnessed a three-way contest for the Lok Sabha polls, with major candidates from the Congress, BJP, and CPI locked in a neck-and-neck battle.

Taking to X on Monday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh hit out at the party, saying the issue was 'manufactured' by the 'one-third prime minister' during the election campaign and taken up by his colleagues to gather support for the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
Ramesh said raking up the issue was 'highly irresponsible' as it threatened to derail India's relationship with Sri Lanka and asked if PM Modi and his colleagues would apologise for having created a 'huge scare' with a neighboring country, especially when he boasts of a Neighbourhood First policy.

Jaishankar made the remarks at a press conference after Modi cited a media report to assert new facts revealed that the Congress "callously" gave away the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka.

The BJP's move to induct Bittu as a minister in the Modi Cabinet assumes significance as the saffron party seeks to spread its footprint in Punjab.

BJP leader Amit Shah in a poll rally last month had asked people of Ludhiana to send Ravneet Singh Bittu to Parliament, promising them that he will make him a 'bada aadmi' (a big man).
Even though he lost from the Ludhiana parliamentary seat, Bittu became a Minister of State in the third Narendra Modi-led cabinet.
Bittu, 48, lost to Congress candidate and state unit chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring from the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat by a margin of 20,942 votes.
Bittu is the grandson of late Beant Singh, who was assassinated in August 1995 when he was the Punjab chief minister.
Bittu is a three-time MP &mdash; twice from Ludhiana and once from Anandpur Sahib, both times on a Congress ticket.
He defected to the BJP this March, leaving several Congress leaders surprised.
At the time of joining, Bittu had praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying that they have a lot of affection for Punjab and want to do a lot for the state.
The BJP later fielded him from the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat.
During election campaigning, Bittu called Shah his friend, in turn, Shah promised to make Bittu a 'bada aadmi'.
"Isse (Bittu) Ludhiana se Delhi ki Sansad mein bhejiye, isko bada aadmi banane ka kaam main karunga (Send him from Ludhiana to Parliament in Delhi, I will make him a big man)," Shah had said in the Ludhiana rally.

In the just concluded 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP did not win any of 13 seats and even lost its stronghold Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur.
However, the vote share of BJP, which went solo in the Lok Sabha polls, doubled to 18.56 per cent, as compared to 9.63 per cent in 2019.
Bittu was first elected as an MP from the Anandpur Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in 2009. He was elected MP from Ludhiana in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Bittu performed well in the constituency's urban assembly segments but he could not get a lead in rural assembly segments, which led to his defeat.
Throughout the campaign, BJP candidates in Punjab faced protests from farmer groups.
Bittu is the son of late Swaranjit Singh, who was one of five children of Beant Singh. His cousin Gurkirat Singh Kotli is still in Congress.
Bittu, known for his strong views against pro-Khalistan leaders, had even opposed the demand for the release of Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the assassination case of his grandfather.
Several Sikh bodies have been demanding release of many Sikh prisoners.

In the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strategically leveraged the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, situated within the Faizabad constituency of Uttar Pradesh, as a pivotal rallying point to garner support from Hindu voters in the Hindi heartland and beyond.
However, as the results of the Lok Sabha elections unfolded on June 4, the party stared at a massive setback with Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad leading by a margin of over 48,000 votes over his nearest BJP rival Lallu Singh.&nbsp;
Lallu Singh, the sitting MP from the seat won the Faizabad constituency in the 2019 elections with 529051 votes. &nbsp;
The latest election trends in Ayodhya assume significance as the Ram temple of Ayodhya has been the fulcrum of BJP's politics in the 1990s, which had catapulted it significantly at the national level.
During campaigning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Barabanki and Hamirpur on May 17 had claimed that the Congress and the Samajwadi Party would run a bulldozer over the Ram temple if elected to power, and asked them to take lessons from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on where bulldozers should be used instead.
On January 22, an idol of the new Ram Lalla was consecrated at the Ayodhya temple, in a landmark event led by the prime minister who also gave a clarion call to go beyond the grand mandir's construction to build the foundation of a "strong, capable and divine" India of the next 1,000 years.&nbsp;

Buoyed by exit poll predictions, the BJP is planning a massive political event, besides the official swearing-in ceremony.&nbsp;
The Indian Express newspaper reported, quoting sources from the BJP, that this political event has been scheduled for the weekend.&nbsp;
It has been learned that this event will take place at either Bharat Mandapam or Kartavya Path on the same day as the official swearing-in ceremony.
According to reports, the political event will be themed showcasing the &ldquo;cultural heritage of India&rdquo;, with a possible sound-and-light show.&nbsp;
Lok Sabha Secretariat is reportedly making preparations to facilitate the travel of newly-elected MPs from across the country, their arrival at transit points such as the airport and railway stations, and their stay in Delhi.
Around 8,000-10,000 people, including &ldquo;representatives of foreign governments&rdquo;, are expected to attend the event.
A senior government official told the newspaper that the event could happen on June 9. But, the event has not yet been finalised.
In 2019, the government took oath on May 30, a week after the results were declared.

Even as Indian political pundits are wrapping around their heads on how many seats will the BJP win in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, a noted US political scientist has weighed in, saying that Narendra Modi's party will better its 2019 numbers.&nbsp;
Speaking to ANI news agency, Ian Bremmer said that BJP will win at least 295 seats, and can go up to 315 Lok Sabha seats.&nbsp;
"Prediction for elections for Eurasia group is 305&plusmn;10 seats. Really not much of a change from what we saw 5 years ago. Internationally, not just from the US perspective, but from the perspective of the rest of the world," he told ANI news agency.
The American political scientist has also predicted that India could be the 3rd largest economy by 2028.
"From the perspective of the rest of the world, India is an economy that has underperformed for a long time but is now doing a lot better".
&ldquo;This is also a country that was very inward-focused for a long time, but this region is now becoming much more of a global leader," he opined.

&nbsp;A woman BJP worker was killed in Nandigram in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, triggering large-scale protests by the saffron party activists there on Thursday, police said.
BJP workers burnt tyres, blocked roads and pulled down shutters of shops in Nandigram, alleging that the TMC-backed criminals were involved in the killing of Rathirani Ari (38), who is a saffron party worker in Sonachura village.
The saffron camp called a bandh in Nadigram as part of its protest but withdrew it later, a local BJP leader said.
Ari was killed and several others were injured after unidentified and armed motorcycle-borne assailants attacked them late Wednesday night, a police officer said.
&ldquo;Ari and several other party workers were given the responsibility to guard a local polling booth last night. TMC-backed criminals attacked them. She was murdered and others were injured there,&rdquo; BJP&rsquo;s district general secretary Meghnadh Paul told PTI.
Among the seven people reportedly injured, the condition of one was critical and the person was shifted to a hospital in Kolkata, he said.
TMC leader in Nandigram Swadesh Das dismissed the allegation, claiming, &ldquo;There were some family disputes and the killing could be the consequence of that.&rdquo; Another senior officer of district police said that an investigation into the killing of the woman is underway.
The Nandigram assembly constituency, which falls under the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, is scheduled to go to polls on Saturday.

The video was shared on the BJP leader's Facebook page. The post was deleted after the media advisor of Congress leader Kamal Nath flagged it.&nbsp;
