This involuntary exposure to the toxic chemicals and carcinogens present in cigarette or tobacco smoke can lead to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and an increased risk of various cancers.
Children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of secondhand smoke. Recognizing the gravity of this issue, public health campaigns and policies have been implemented worldwide to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke and protect the health of non-smokers.
<h3>Study finds millions of non-smokers with nicotine in blood&nbsp;</h3>
A study published in the journal Nicotine &amp; Tobacco Research found that 56 million American adults are frequently exposed to toxic secondhand smoke or passive smoking. According to the American Cancer Society, when nonsmokers are exposed to passive smoking, they end up breathing in nicotine and harmful chemicals just like people who smoke.
The scientists detected nicotine in the bloodstream of 51% of the participants, but interestingly, within this subgroup, 67.6% said that they had not encountered vapes or cigarettes.&nbsp;
<h3>No amount of passive smoking is considered safe&nbsp;</h3>
It's crucial to emphasize that there is no safe threshold for passive smoking. Even minimal exposure to secondhand smoke can have detrimental health effects. The toxic chemicals released by burning tobacco can quickly infiltrate the air, and when non-smokers breathe in these pollutants, they face an increased risk of developing serious health conditions.
The only effective way to protect individuals from the dangers of passive smoking is to create smoke-free environments and promote smoking cessation to ensure the well-being of both active and passive smokers.

Published in the journal of Alzheimer's Disease, a new study has found that middle-aged smokers are more likely to experience memory loss and confusion than non-smokers.&nbsp;
For the study, researchers analysed more than 136,018 people aged 45 and older and about 11% reported a cognitive decline.&nbsp;
As per the findings, the cognitive decline among smokers was almost 1.9 times that of nonsmokers and it declined in people recently who quit smoking.&nbsp;

Some of the signs and symptoms of RA are persistent aches, stiffness and swelling in more than just one joint. Symptoms are common for hands, knee joints and feet with signs of fever, tiredness or fatigue and weakness.
Risk Factors&nbsp;of RA
RA can begin at any age, although it is more prevalent as one grows older. It is most common in adults in their sixties, women are more prone to get affected.&nbsp;There are higher chances of getting affected if there is a family history of the disease. Smoking can also raise the chance of having RA.
Diagnosis of RA
It is difficult to diagnose RA in the early stages. However, a doctor may prescribe the following to ascertain the condition.
● Blood tests: A high ESR&nbsp;or CRP&nbsp;level in people with rheumatoid arthritis may indicate the presence of an inflammatory process in the body.&nbsp;
● Imaging tests: The doctor may recommend x-rays to monitor the progression of rheumatoid arthritis in the joints over time.&nbsp;
Treatment of RA

Smoking
Tobacco has been proven a carcinogen for over decades and smokers have a 1 in 3-lifetime&nbsp;risk of dying prematurely from tobacco-related heart diseases, cancers or lung diseases. It causes cancers of the lungs, oropharynx (throat), larynx (vocal cords), esophagus (food pipe), kidney, bladder, colon (intestine), pancreas, and stomach.
Those who stop smoking have a 30-50% lower 10-year lung cancer mortality as compared to the ones who continue to smoke.
Obesity
Obesity and a high-fat diet has&nbsp;proven to cause various cancers, around 4% cases of&nbsp;cancer&nbsp;worldwide are caused due&nbsp;to obesity. These are mostly seen in 50-60 years of the&nbsp;population but are rising amongst the young too.&nbsp;Obesity-related cancers include colorectal cancer, female breast cancer, cancer of the uterus and gallbladder.&nbsp;
As per studies, decreased consumption of processed food, meat and high caloric diet can prevent such cancers. Adequate physical activity&nbsp;and&nbsp;a diet rich in fibre can also be beneficial to prevent&nbsp;such cancers.
Alcohol
Recent research has proven that alcohol is responsible for over 3 million deaths each year, worldwide of which 4 lakh&nbsp;people die due to cancer. Alcohol can increase the risk of 7 different types of cancer, breast, bowel, oral, esophageal, laryngeal, pharyngeal and liver.
Pollutants
Air pollution, toxins from industrial waste, highly processed foods, and exposure to&nbsp;plastic&nbsp;increase the risk of lung, stomach and colon cancer. Recent studies have proven that the occurrence of lung cancers in non-smokers is linked to passive smoking or air pollution. Drinking water exposed to heavy industrial wastes and metals can increase this risk too.
Hence, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, moderate consumption of alcohol and a healthy diet need to be incorporated to prevent hazardous cancer or cancer-like diseases.

New Zealand has announced it will outlaw smoking for the next generation so that those who are aged 14 and under today will never be able to legally buy tobacco.

In a bid to create a smoke-free generation, New Zealand has planned to impose a complete ban on young people from buying cigarettes in their lifetime. According to a new law expected to be enacted next year, people aged 14 or under will never be allowed to purchase cigarettes.

Currently, New Zealand outlaws tobacco sales to those under 18. As per the new legislation, the legal smoking age will increase every year to create a smoke-free generation by 2025.
Other measures include reducing the legal amount of nicotine in tobacco products to very low levels, cutting down the shops where cigarettes could legally be sold and increasing funding to addiction services. The new laws will not restrict vape sales.

A new study presented at the Annual European Congress&nbsp;of Rheumatology suggests that secondhand smoke exposure in both childhood and adulthood is linked with an increased risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women.
But what is secondhand smoke? As per the Centres for Disease and Control, secondhand smoke is &ldquo;the combination of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and the smoke breathed out by smokers&rdquo;.
The study included 79,806 women, around the age of 49, out of which 698 women developed rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed approximately 12 years after the study began in 1990. The association&nbsp;was primarily observed amongst never-smoking women. It was also found that about 13.5 percent of women reported exposure to cigarette smoke as children and 53.6 percent reported being exposed to smoking as adults. What was further observed is that an overall 58.9 percent had secondhand exposure in either adulthood or childhood and 8.25 percent had both.
The result of the study highlighted that &ldquo;smoking by-products, whether actively or passively inhaled, could generate autoimmunity, at least towards antigens involved in rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis&rdquo;.
The need of the hour is to avoid smoking for the betterment of not just one&rsquo;s own health but also of those around them. If nothing else then passive smoking must definitely be avoided.
